What's the general feeling about this? A lot of opinion seems to be that if - as is likely - we don't get promoted this season, we will 'storm it' next term.
I thought we would have done much better this season - new manager, centenery season, cheap season tickets etc etc...........but let's face it, we have certainly 'stormed' nothing this time.
I think it's a bit naive to suggest we will storm it next year, when you look at the big teams who will possibly come down, and the teams already here who will be stronger next year.
What's going to change so soon to make us THAT much better?
For us to storm it next year, I think we need a really strong finish to build on..........a strong finish would see us in the play offs would it not?.............

There can certainly be no guarantees about next season, and we may need to be patient. But everything looks well placed for us to really push on. Unlike the last two seasons we will have a manager in the place who has had a good few months with the players, and he'll certainly know exactly what we need while strengthening in the summer.
A good run at the end of this season will certainly help in terms of momentum.

We won't storm anything if we can't sort our away form out.

We won't storm anything if we can't sort our away form out. Totally. That's really the only thing that concerns me. Well, and the fact we can't score goals..........

on paper we should be looking at automatic next season, playoffs as a last resort. But football doesn't always work that way, ie how many crewe players if any would get into the town team? yet they beat us comfotably.

"Storming it" might be going to far.
However, with a full pre-season under his belt, & a couple more additions to the squad I can see us challenging.
Must work on the consistancy (sp) side of things though. Thats whats stopped Town in the past, and is my biggest fear for next season. Blackie will have to work his magic in that department I think.

haha yeah - it is always "next season we will win the league!"
the trouble is - we never do.
we havent "strormed" anything for years - i reckon we should be aiming for the playoffs next season
realistically f we keep the majority of the starting 11 the same we will be lucky to do that
if we get an entire new back four, two new strikers, keep smithies and add some bite to our midfield then we may have a chance
otherwise it will be more of the ssme i reckon...

When our season is over on Saturday (sorry, but being realistic - we won't beat Stockport) I reckon get Novak back, give Parker another chance, put Denton in the Saturday 16 and throw the damn f**king lot on.......and see what happens!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In fact, play a 8-1-1 formation for a laugh including Boothy, Pilks, Lukas, Cads, Ainsworth - some f**ker is bount to score!

Don't think we'll storm it but definately think we'll be stronger. We do, however, have to start going on to win more games when taking the lead. Definately need to work on shutting teams out once we're in front

We need an entire new back four to reach the play offs? Yet with our current back four an a diabolical attack (and a dire start to the season) we're within 6 or 7 points? Don't see it. We need 2 or 3 strikers. A central midfielder as cover, a right back and ideally a centre half as cover. Then if we get offers for them, allow; Skarz, Parker, Flynn, Jevons, Kamara, Lucketti, Unsworth to go.

I think the squad is showing signs that we are going in the right direction it just desperately needs an out an out goalscorer. We've been bleating about this for ages now but I reckon that we'll get that come the Summer.

I agree that as Town fans we think we are going to go up nearly every year, but I genuinely think we will go up next season, for the following reasons: 1) Lee Clark and his staff will have had longer to get their change in football philosophy over to the team 2)With a full pre-season from Blackie under their belts, our boys will be much fitter than now - and even now I would say they are fitter than under Stanley 3)I am confident that we will have 2 strikers who can finish off some of our excellent attacking moves that have come to nothing 4)We basically wasted the first third of this season, so for us to be in the position we are now is both testament to what GM & LC have done for the team, but it also shows that you don't have to be world beaters to do well in the 3rd division. What price are we to go up next season?

Well said Terrier Ramone.
But we mustn't waste the very good position we are now in, as any 'in form' team can win three matches in the play offs. If promotion is possible, it's got to be taken!
Every season there will always be a handful of clubs determined (and spending) to win promotion (including Town). Then another couple will emerge, on a very limited budget, and play above their potential. It's never easy or predictable.
Under Lee Clark Town seem to have adopted the Kevin Keegan philosophy of scoring one more goal than the opposition. Trouble is we have difficulty scoring!!!!
To help preserve Dean Hoyle's money. far better that in the summer we're signing 2 strikers for a total of £3m for The Championship; rather than £1m for League 1... ... then more the following summer!

Martin, I totally agree that if we have the chance to go up we have to take it - I just feel that for this to happen this season, we would have to go on a great run now, but still have to hope for several others slipping up. At the moment, we look great at home and very poor away, although I have faith that Clark will address this for next season - after all, we are not yet a side used to winning many consecutive games, and even at home, we never play for 90 minutes, which I believe is due to a lack of confidence.

I do think we need a new defence yeah - Holdsworth has had a poor season and is out of contract, Williams is average at best although has improved, and the Butler and Clarke combination isnt good or consistent enough together if we want to get promotion
I would get two new centre backs in, let Lucketti and Unsworth go and give Clarke and Butler some competition.
I would then add 3 new strikers (releasing Jevons, Booth and Parker)
I would also get some bite and drive in central midfield to give Collins and Goodwin competition.
Releasing Flynn, Kamara, Craney?, Worthy, Berrett (on loan) from the midfield.
This overhaul is of course assuming a) we can find someone to take those guys from us and b) we have the money to find players that are better

Not having a go at Colinio here, but doesn't this smack of the arrogance that we accuse Leeds (and other) fans of? We have been a lower league club for the vast majority of my lifetime... I do believe that this time with Hoyle etc. and with a very balanced coaching team it won't be another false dawn. But a bit (un)like the Villa team last night, the club should always make the effort to achieve something that's still possible. Villa's decision to rest a lot of first teamers last night could really backfire on them if they miss out on 3rd or 4th place, so if we start experimenting with what is virtually the last third of the season displaying to supporters that we've effectively written the season off, I think it could be a bad move. I don't think any manager would actually do that with their league campaign though... The Villa situation just sums up football for me though, the clubs are being run 100% as a business, ie by the head... At least with Dean H it will still predominantly be run by the head, but guaranteed to have some heart in there as well...

Do we need a major overhaul?
Look at Millwall, an average side for several seasons now. Didn't sign too many players of note in the Summer and look where they are

I think we do need a bit more drive in midfield, and agree with your strikers. Not sure we need x 2 Centre Backs. Competition for Holdsworth, yes, but I think the middle pair have plenty to offer.

Well the starting 11 is starting to change but i would get rid of Clarke, Holdsworth, Jevons, Williams and Collins, who ill admit are all fairly solid lower league 1 players but are unlikely to contibute to a sustained title challenge that most fans expect next season I would have included Worthington but he looks like he is on his way anyway. Ill concede however that the problem Town have is that the Ternant managed to weaken the squad massively and i suspect that most of the summer will be spent on shifting these players out so Town have no option but to use the core again (which they already have done with Clarke)
