"I'd try to capture more of the essence of the original song. Rage of Ed's acoustic version is a good example." had rage of ed not done that version we may have gone that way, we do use strings and piano in other songs so i wouldnt of ruled it out but out of respect to him we werent going to basically lift the work he did and add to it, it had to be clearly different. Very kind of you sir (sirs including paulmat ! However, don't worry about any of that from my point of view - more than happy for you to have a crack at a similar acoustic version with piano, strings etc... in fact I reckon that'd sound mint! My stab at it was only ever a 'hmmm I wonder what it sounds like acoustic style...?' attempt on my work's dictaphone and seeing as it isn't even my song, I'm sure you boys could do a better version As for your version JP, I reckon you've had a cracking attempt at creating a very different version of the song. I can see why some people don't take to it and if I'm being honest, I agree with paulmat in that I can see it being ace to hear live at a gig but in terms of getting the crowd going, I'm not so sure... I think we should look at going down Manc's old boy version idea - that'd be ace ;D In terms of production values, you admit yourself that they aren't brilliant and as a fellow unsigned band person I think it's unfair to strongly criticise on that basis... it's bleedin' expensive booking decent studio and mixing time! However, I would say that the vocals could perhaps do with reworking in terms of quality or failing that, maybe just playing with the levels a bit. Really liked the middle 8 bit though - you boys can obviously play! As for the pretty extreme criticism - well everyone's entitled to their opinion I guess. However, it's not easy reading that kind of stuff (my band have reviews on that 'slicethepie' site and they range from hugely positive to gut-wrenchingly awful) and for what it's worth, I think you've responded to it in a very understanding way. Man I'm starting to bore myself with my own ranting now so I'll just be shutting up...

Cheers rage, its good to have another unsigned band person on here!
n yeah booking a studio is expensive as fuck so for the cost of nothing but a number of weekends of ours and repeated demos it didnt cost a penny to make so not bad!
as far as the vocals go we would give all our rigth arms to get in a studio with some decent compression, one day maybe!

Well seeing as I'd obviously not for one minute suggest locating a ripped version of CubaseSX, I can highly recommend the Boss digital portastudios... The one I got was a pretty reasonable price and although it's without the ability to burn cd's from the actual deck, you can probably pick these up at a decent price now. Great thing is that with a couple of decent quality mics you could hire a practice space and record away - you get all the Boss effects in there too so it's all top quality stuff

Hmmmm all boss effects? sounds tasty. as it happens we have a ripped version of cubase but not sx unfortunately so its a bit limited, even have money constraints when it comes to buy simple home recordign equipment, gutted!

CubaseSX is great. Had it on my PC when I was doing my Music Tech degree (you're allowed to not pay for software when you're a student right?). Amazing what you can do with that and a decent mic.
Definitely beat the £100 4 track recorder that I use to record stuff on.

Was it one of those that would go onto tape but when you played it in a 'regular' machine it'd be half speed? ;D We used to have one like this and many a hour was spent re-doing....and re-doing takes in such a painstaking way!

Yep, it was hard work, but OK for putting demos together. Remember putting a 5 track 'album' together in a night with my mate in his bedroom, which at the time I thought was amazing. Would love to listen to it now and see how bad it really sounds. I'm sure its on a mini disc somewhere at my parents house, maybe I'll try and dig it out sometime

Never mind Ding, I'm a massive Manics fan, without doubt my favourite band.

Still play This is Yesterday in my acoustic set these days though...awesome song With your guitar tuned to G? I still have my acoustic tuned to G half the time, solely for playing this is yesterday and small black flowers that grow in the sky. This is getting really off topic, sorry Manc.

I was (am?) a fully-paid up member of the Cult of Richey.
I had the privilege of interviewing Richey and Nicky a few times as a spotty-teenager for my Manics fanzine (readership = me).

Sorry Manc...forgive me but people have brought up the manics..
But so am I Iffy - I have everything that they have ever done (single and album wise) on 12" and 7". My pride and joy is the double picture disc of generation terrorists and the pink splattered vinyl of New Art Riot..

The original was the blue and white sleeve (Clash rip-off) - on Sound Bank Studio label. Tonnes of bootlegs out there, but an ex of mine had one of the originals (only 200 pressed) - signed!

A while back I had to sell a fair chunk of my Manics collection to Dead Wax / Radar Records in the Byram Arcade - including signed stuff. Did you pick any of it up...?

no - mostly picked my stuff up from vinyl tap (which used to be in leeds) and a little record place in the piece hall in halifax.
wish i'd have known though..
anyway back to the original point - I've put the feelers out with a couple of friends to see whether they know of any free recording space.
