The town doesn't cash in on its student population, ok, yeah there are plenty of pubs and stuff for em to get pissed in round the uni area but I'm talking after they've graduated. Universities that produce science and technology graduates usually find technology and science parks spring up. Kirklees don't seem to grasp this concept and the domino effect it could bring. At the minute the towns ring road acts as a barrier to some extent, beyond the ring road is a waste land, prime redevelopment land is left to waste. The tract of land where the sports centre needs clearing, as does the area behind the newly refurbed flats at the top of Leeds Road. The old sports centre is coming down along with those ugly flats nearby once the new one is finished early 2015, although it'll be replaced by Tesco (who are paying a share of building the new sports centre) so not exactly a major attraction, although it'll look nicer at least. Don't know what's happening to the current Tesco.. You'll also find that any development work, no matter how big or small, is always met with opposition from people who most of the time have no reason to object other than that they don't like change. Reminds me of these old classics.

Not only do you have NIMBYs but also BANANAs.

That was on the edge of Sheffield though, nothing around it. Put a few shops and bars in the same complex and you have a different scenario. Appreciate the Sheffield slope is on the fringes of the City (I saw it all the time driving over for Town matches when I was younger) but the subsidy the Sheffield slope would need per annum is £250k which I am sceptical that HDOne would be able to generate through increased linked trips to the adjacent bars and shops to be a going concern. I just think it'd be a bit of a white elephant and would rather the focus was on viable deliverable schemes focused on the town centre rather than detracting from it. Personal view of course...

Fair point, I just want to be able to go up a hill, neck some Stella, than try and negotiate my way back down on skis, without traipsing all the way to Southern France.

The worst case scenario is that it dies on it's arse after bringing plenty of work to the area while being developed & constructed.
The best case is that it reinvigorates the entire area (including the town centre) & generates local job opportunities.
Whats not to be excited about!
I think that it could be great.
For those saying it will never happen just look how the fringes of the town centre have changed in recent years. I bet all that was never going to happen either.

For those that think the development won't succeed or go ahead take a look at what Bury did with their Rock development a smaller town even closer to a major city managed to create a retail and leisure destination with mixed usage and living spaces. I hope it goes ahead and think it will.

I haven't heard too much about this project. I appreciate artistic license, but the picture appears to suggest the ski slope is an open air real snow slope. What is the actual proposal for the ski slope? Dry slope or indoor snow slope (like Chill Factore, Xscape, Hemel, MK)?

Nice of Towns life president Ken Davey to eventually hand back the clubs 40% shares for a reported 2 million making him a very healthy profit and makes me wonder if that would have still been an on going situation had Kirklees council not stepped in to resolve matters. I also remember the supporters making a massive contribution to the club when we went into administration and surely that money would also have been returned to the football side of the business with interest.

The big question is what will the football side of the business make from the 100 million pound HD 1 PROJECT as I think the catering will be contracted out to the highest tender similar to what Davey has already done.

Old Tescos is earmarked for a large residential development. It just needs the new Sports Centre to be finished off in the new year before the rest can get going.

I'd been led to believe that all new superstores were on hold following recent profit warnings.
Has work started yet? Guess not if there's still a sports centre sitting there.
Wouldn't surprise me if it never happened, or way delayed...

Wouldn't surprise me if it never happened, or way delayed... Not heard that but if it has happened "new" would probably mean any new proposed developments. This one has been a long time in the planning so I imagine would not be regarded as new. Work has not started, but it really has given the new sports centre going up & the arrangements in place. I wouldn't worry about supermarkets not having a few quid to splash about.

As far as I'm aware Tesco are just waiting for the new sports centre to be finished and work should begin. As I highlighted earlier that tract of land is prime redevelopment land but it looks like its going to be developed piece meal and no doubt they will make a total cock and balls of the whole site ruling out beneficial future redevelopment to the town.

The saddest thing for me is seeing how terrible the nightlife is now. I know the smoking ban killed plenty of pubs but Huddersfield is a ghost town on a Saturday night now.
All those students at the uni and town is deserted! Why is this?
I'm hoping the HD one will bring some decent bars to the town, though by the time they open I'll be too old for em!

Its difficult to see how HD One will kick start the town, its just another bland out of town development and it offers nothing that can't be found elsewhere. If they did attract anyone it would be only people from Huddersfield. The Kingsgate extension would be a far bigger boost to the town than HD One could ever hope to be. Kingsgate extension aint happening, some bloke bought the old nighclub (Chicago rock café) for student premises and so buggered up the plans for stage 2

I think the town centre should be demolished and paved, a few bits of greenery in the middle and maybe a couple of coffee shops oh hang on isn't that happening by the new college? In seriousness I think HDone would be a good idea. Whether it happens or not is another matter.

be total gridlock man!!!!! That'd be my concern too, the total infrastructure of Leeds Rd struggles with any reasonable amount of traffic as it is now. Even if HDone does get off the ground the 'extra' people in the area and subsequent queues to get there from either direction would make it a one trip wonder for me at best. Think the term White Elephant was used in context of the stadium previously and again on this thread for this. Surely the fact we've not had any more use out of it as a music venue would ring alarm bells for any investors. A hotel, flats.. 2 nightclubs and DOZENS of bars?? Leeds Rd version of Tenerife's las Americas springs to mind.. I wouldn't want to live nor stay there. I just can't see how a Town which used to have a decent atmosphere circa 15 years ago but is now dying on it's arse for a night life on a weekend, with students living a lot closer to the town centre, will benefit from having that near the stadium. The previously purported plans for cable car / long walkway from the train station down seems to have been removed. Pie in the sky ideas for me. It's a pain in the arse just to go to the cinema when the footy's on. Can you imagine us getting to the prem (hard I know!) with all the extra crowd and that surrounding it. Bonkers.

You’re forgetting the infamous chair lifts. Happily transporting everybody from the train and bus station, taking in the sights down below, the 1960s Council flats, Benson for beds, the derelict land across from the gas works and Shire Link Van Hire.
