Well not diving under it would help.
35 yards out minimum, he's completely misread that and was slow reacting to it. Shambolic wall.
Good strike, granted, but a real quality keeper would be getting a hand to that. Sadly, Smithies was pretty bog standard a keeper.
And his organisation of the wall was beyond pub level. The lad couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery. Always a poor commander of both box and defence.

I'd like to see a keeper dive over a shot in the top corner.

'but a real quality keeper would be getting a hand to that' Hang on a minute, who do you support again? Do you support a premier league team or a team bumbling in the bottom half of the championship? It's gone from piss poor Smithies and amateurish wall to great strike and a good quality keeper would save that (which many wouldn't)

Sorry, no time for idiots. Life's too short. Good strike, should have been saved. Hang on a minute, you was questioning my wording of the goal claiming the 'cracking strike' wasn't justifiable. then you accused me of banging on about Dempsey, which i haven't. And now you call us idiots.... I'm just confused

anyone pretending smithies was a fantastic keeper should remember his display against leeds at elland road. he completely lost the plot.
fantastic shot stopper but my dad would have played better in goal than he did against leeds, even in his 70's.

As nice a guy as Powell may be, I expressed my anger after seeing his team sheet for game 1 of his tenure. After this I reluctantly backed him but have to say I'm certainly not sorry to see him go, certainly after what has come out this week. We can call it stabbing the guy in the back after he has gone but I fail to understand 1. How a guy earning (I'd guess) hundreds of thousands of pounds doesn't feel the need to move closer to his employment and throw himself 100% into the job 2. How he can let a Championship football team get so unfit. Yes, I'd imagine Dean's example was probably an extreme but the fact of the matter is, no matter what our budget is, we have NO excuse not to be the fittest team in the league On top of this, 3 Pipes post is spot on so I won't go into the other reasons I felt we'd be better off without him Just as a matter of interest what caused your anger on seeing his team sheet for that first game? 01 Smithies 04 Hudson 27 Smith 33 Lynch 17 Robinson 37 Peltier (D Ward - 80' ) 08 Butterfield Booked 10 Coady 21 Wells 09 Vaughan Booked (Stead - 26' ) 30 Bunn (Lolley - 61' ) Substitutes 03 Dixon 07 Scannell 11 D Ward 13 Murphy 14 Stead 15 Wallace 18 Lolley Rephrase this as not so much the personnel but the style of play and changing a promising formation under Lillis. I remember I wasn't the only one feeling the same at the time. While losing to Boro wasn't a disaster, the following game against Wigan was a joke. Lucky to scrap a 0-0 against a team that went on to be relegated

Who needs a wall from 30 yards ? He left his left hand side wide open giving Leadbeter a massive target, their guy pulled our wall over giving him a free outside of boot poke at that corner. Smithies footwork was none existant. No wall was needed. Roy Keane bet every Aston Villa player 1k a pop that he would stop every shot from 30 yards with no wall, who walked off with the cash laughing ?

Will he fuck be missed. He'll be back under a new name just like that last name was a reincarntion.
Thwarts called it right, Smithies footwork was shite.
If you lot are happy with mediocrity, so be it, I can't help you.

Watch this angle 3 pipe and tell me that Smithies should've saved it.
Town's 3rd man in that wall was either fouled or moved otherwise his face would've got in the way of the shot.
Positionally Smithies was pretty much perfect - that is one hell of a goal. Only the very top keepers may have got to that

Sorry disagree. Too slow getting across. He's also gone for it with the wrong hand. Most keepers going for that with the correct hand would be tipping that over the bar. He's 35 yards out, take another step and make the save with your left hand. I was right behind it, he was too slow.

Only the very top keepers may have got to that I have to agree, it makes no difference whether the shot was 35 yards out or 50 yards out if the ball is going to swerve at the last moment as it did 12 or 14 yards out it's the equivalent of facing a penalty. Who saves penalties struck where that ended up? Move his feet? Which way? It was straight down his throat until that vicious swerve.

As I say, some of you are too content with mediocrity. That was Powell's problem too.
Not a single one of you can accept he's gone for that with his wrong hand so what chance do we have with you admitting his feet were poor?

Not a single one of you can accept he's gone for that with his wrong hand so what chance do we have with you admitting his feet were poor? About the same chance as you accepting the swerve took it out of his reach right or left hand when it was coming down his throat for the first 20 yards of its trajectory. has my opinion got anything to do with Powell accepting mediocrity, nice deflection attempt though. You stated that he didn't set his wall up right but if Peltier had stayed where he was instead of pulling away with the Boro man in the wall, it likely would have hit him square in the face. People see things differently though some resort to calling others idiots if they disagree.

Then it swings away ferociously. Quite honestly you're not even being hyper critical - unrealistic more like. Oh and as a keeper, when you dive to your left, you get added reach height wise with your right arm, so no he hasn't gone for it with his wrong hand.

I was in that stand that day and caught it on video - one of the best goals I've seen at the JSS.
