Would be a big call for him to leave Preston right now Don't know why he would apart from money. Stoke in a right state and Preston running along nicely

Those "reports" could be wrong tho. We know how these rumours enter and exit.

Overachieved at Northern Ireland with a limited group of players, looks a good motivator. He won’t have the luxury of games against a San Marino to boost confidence/points though, interesting to see how he does.

This would be an interesting appointment. He really is putting his head in a hungry lion's mouth; he's giving up a fairly cushy number with NI for a basket case in Stoke.
I suppose that money is the real motivator here.

I suppose that money is the real motivator here. Is Stoke that much of a basket case though? Unlike some clubs (Sunderland for example) I think the owners have been let down by managers who in turn have been let down by players rather than the other way around. From the outside it doesn't look like managers haven't been backed. Look how quickly a decent managerial team have improved Town. Not sure O'Neill is the man but I'd be pretty confident someone will turn around Stoke (in quite some manner) before too long.

Maybe...but it's a big, full-on day to day job compared to the part time gig at NI. Tbh and I said it in my post, he could be an interesting appointment. I want him to be shit and to fail miserably but I think he has something about him.

Night game, packed out with Stoke in open end, think they were top and Town struggling. Was part of the opening sequence to a fanzine programme called Standing Room Only, a few years before Fantasy Football League became popular. Happy times.

If they resurrected that fanzine programme, would it be called safe standing room only?

Went on the Special. Frog marched by hundreds of coppers all the way to the ground. Great turn out by us. Seem to remember Lillis having a great chance to win it. Ended up 0-0. Superb ground

What a talent he was Can't remember..I do remember Lillis missing in front of us from about 6 yards Well I remember the look on his face so he can't have been too far out. Needless to say we lost at home...was it a replay or second leg?

I went to uni with a stokie and he said the best player for them from that era was Paul Bracewell

No way would we have taken the amount we did for a first leg They used to change the format between rounds. Was really weird

If I was a Stoke fan I'd be looking at us and thinking we should have appointed those two, as will others

I remember us taking a reet army down to Watford for a second leg (granted it was a second leg not a first).. Stoke would have been first division back all the first division teams brought out our crowd.. I've recollections of youthful garth crooks and inchy heath playing for Stoke that night also but my memory might be playing tricks

Smacks of Coleman to Sunderland for me Yep same here. Club management is so, so different to international management. We've seen evidence of that both ways.

Stoke have spaffed another load of money on compensation. On another manager unproven at their level. Bravo. Should have appointed somebody with a track record of making a team solid and keeping them up. Boring but true.
