I'm not privy to our scouting methods, but I know in days gone by we (along with many other clubs) have used the Football Manager database to identify which players to go and watch. We were featured in a documentary called "An Alternative Reality" where it showed exactly how the FM database was used to work out our shortlists. I've no idea if this was common knowledge but I always find it amusing when people throw out Football Manager comparisons in jest, when the truth isn't actually that far off. If anyone is interested in the documentary then have a look. That software has a more active role in the modern game than some would believe. Why spend a load on stats etc when it's already there for your buying team to look at?

The beginning of that documentary focuses on Derby County and shows how Sport Interactive use their own researchers to collect the information from each club. Every single league club has its own designated researcher who spends time with the squad and watches training sessions to compile the data and keep everything as up to date and accurate as possible. If anyone knows who does the Town research then I'd love to know as that is pretty much my dream job. Feel like I've been in training for the post for over 20 years 😂

Best way to scout players? Go out and watch ‘em. Watch what they do when their team is under the cosh, it’s chucking it down and blowing a gale...... as it is today down here. AFC Wimbledon v Doncaster or Crawley v Port Vale for me..... haven’t made my mind up yet. Unlikely to see anyone that will catch the eye, but you never know.

An argument about what someone means by identity 😂. Dear me.
Let’s just agree who ever identified/signed off/ negotiated/ agreed these deals dint do a very good job.
Could have been worse we could have signed Benito Carbone and sold 25 year season tickets to pay for it.

Shake your heads and start again, which most of the club and the fans have managed now.

Dont worry lads, he will re-register as supernovak and continue to deliver the truth. His success rate is nowhere near my 96.57%... but he comes in a close 3rd. You’ve honestly got a screw lose. When you want Cyril to abuse someone into leaving........😉😁😁

But once you’ve identified players using a database that is. Otherwise it’s shooting fish in a barrel. Especially when you’re a smaller club trying to find value, particularly in the European market. That’s what the smart money does; it focusses resource and uses stats to reduce risk, to target specifics - due diligence. Otherwise you waste time and resource watching games where you’re ‘unlikely to see anyone that will catch the eye’. Pointless.

You’ve got to back up what you see with your eyes, certainly, but you still need to watch players live. Most of the players I’ve tipped in recent years I wish they were at Town right now!

Who’s saying we don’t? We narrow the field and select players from a pool to watch, in the flesh.

The price of football podcast was on scouting this week. It was an interesting listen, it included Town's former head of performance Darren Robinson.

Just questioning the due diligence plus prem clubs which we were have scouts or use scouts based abroad. All for narrowing a field if you can But signing players not seen in the flesh for the amounts we did is criminal IMO

I can’t expand on the quality of our scouting network but the error does not lie in the stats or the gathering of data. The error lies in the interpretation of the data and, ultimately, the judgment of the player by the scout, ending in those that make the decision I.e. the manager. Our due diligence is limited with respect to most if not all Premier League clubs simply as a result of budget and structure (time + resource = money). But that’s not to say we don’t do ours and the principles of the process on the whole is largely the same. It will be interpreting to see how Webb approaches the system over the next few years. He has a built a reputation and picking up players whose characters have been perceived to be a little troubled - Brown may have been one of his recommendations on this basis.

No issues with data it's what it is. The issue like you say is the initial interpretation of it,but that's where due diligence should come in. I get mistakes can be made but several at once smacks of incompetance. I get a feeling the whole system will be interpretated differently with the cowleys. Football as always is about opinions. 😉

Surely all the club needs to do is offload all the scouts and anyone involved in any way, shape or form with the current recruitment and just sign all the Otium Eastern European gems, for "buttons". Simple really.

Lad I know at the club as confirmed pretty much everything all agreed to sign Bristol city's sammie Szmodics. Nicky and Danny love his energy in and around the box and plays very well next to a target man. Make of that what you will

He always looked too good for L2 whenever I saw highlights from Col U games. Wouldn’t be entirely surprised if there’s some truth in this, despite what maynardblue said a few days ago.

Would we fill one of the three remaining loan spaces with a lad who can’t get into a side in the same league as ourselves? thought the talk was of premier league loans

It may be just a case that this lad has fallen out of favour with the management for reasons other than his ability.

Unbalanced squads, form, not fitting in a system, etc. - all reasons why someone works at one club, but not at another.

I think you have got to expect a few lower league players coming in considering where the cowleys have come. They will know who they the better players are that's for sure Just hope they can make the step up

Full of shyte pal.
You can choose to believe what you like but full of shyte is a bit rich To be fair Maynard is usually spot on. 2nd only to me.
