Great loan signing for us but as a permanent this has been a total disaster and this news further compounds that.
Edit. Can’t imagine there was anyone who was disappointed with the signing and it seemed a real statement at the time. Really never expected him to come back after the loan. He seemed out of our league
Wonder how many of the €20m we spent we’ll get back
Burdened with his wages for longer than the summer now.
Exactly, its terrible news for Town. We needed him to go there and be impressive whilst on loan. Then either Fulham or someone else whos been impressed take him and his wages off our hands in the summer.
They might be having to fork out a loan fee for him for a few months yet but because of this theres a far higher chance he'll be back here sucking a fortune out of our club for a lot longer after that now.
Theres no karma with this at all as for as town are concerned.
Maybe the loan was with a condition to buy . We loaned Mbenza and not a single person at the club wanted to buy him after his awful loan period but clearly we were obligated to.

Would be brilliant if it was , but who'd be daft enough to agree to a deal like that!!?

Pretty much any club who wanted him permanently, but didn't have room this year in their transfer or FFP budget.

All buys without a loan period are a gamble. The difference with Mbenza is it wasn't really a loan, we went to buy and to suit Montpellier deferred payment. Dean Hoyle made it plain early doors whatever happened he was our player. Buy now pay later, we've certainly paid later, as with Sobhi. Diakhabi etc.

How many times do you have to get your fingers burnt before you stop sticking them in the fire !

Till forever. As I said, all signings are gambles. Some make it, a lot don't. Just like most clubs.

Here's a thought. Can anyone picture a scenario where a bought into the new process, a fit and hungry TK playing at the top of his game under Carlos in the championship look like? We're talking about a player who we were all chomping at the bit spending 15-20m on after his loan spell.

He played out his skin for his multimillion pound deal that’s the coffee smell when you wake up. He would have got around 10% of his signing fee plus £40000 a week for the last two seasons. His attitude stinks but it’s the reek of the modern footballer

I think the fact that as a club "we couldn't be arsed" making any attempt to stay in the PL during our second season is enough to demotivate anybody. I am not defending him but a club that simply gave up doesn't help. Its up to Carlos now - if he can get him up and running again that would be great. Cannot see why anyone in England or abroad who are better than us would take a risk on him etc.
Maybe if we play him in his actual position of centre half and don't have a lower league manager saying publically that he can't defend when he clearly can then we may see the best out of him.
He's not a massively good footballer. Although...he's better than Stearman or Toffolo. As such for me if he can't be sold he should be in the squad and playing.
He'll be an asset to the Huddersfield Town B team I'm sure.

I have a feeling many of these players will start to be a lot more motivated as their contracts wear down. In this market who in their right mind is offering Kongolo big money after a few years of not playing.
I think they’ll pick up, we’ll forgive them and then they’ll get the move. Their motivations won’t have changed, but our objectives will be aligned.
Let’s face it, most players don’t care about our cause particularly, but their quest for money means we benefit, and we turn a blind eye to that.
Sorry but like him or not Kongolo is by far the best defender we have on the books.
He absolutely crunched and marked some of the best attacking players in the PL out of games in our first season. Granted, slightly less in the second but let's not forget he wasn't the only one not pulling his weight.
I can see both sides re the Preston game and possibly Lincoln was it, when he came on as a sub and strolled around. Nobody knows what's gone on behind the scenes but I guess the ball is now in his court and if he wants it I'd happily see him given another chance.

Agreed. He’s the best defender I’ve seen at Town. In his loan spell he was a monster. Honourable mentions for Monkou and Lucketti mk1.
Having a continental European as head coach will help manage our French contingent I think. Plus the fact he’s a bloody good coach ofcourse.
He’s a big depreciating asset right now so he either contributes on the pitch straight away or we cut our losses altogether and sell for peanuts and take the hit.

For Kongolo it is wake up and smell the coffee time. If he had stayed fit and played often for Fulham he could be on the brink of a Premiership return, but that did not happen. He is now back with us with hardly any games last season trying to regain his fitness. Completely new coaching team, new season, this is a massive opportunity for him to restart his career. If he grasps it we could have a really good player back, if he doesn’t I just don’t know what his next move is. For me if he steps up then great.
It will have to be for a decent fee, no point selling unless we can cover the remaining fee and wages. Any transfer has to leave us without any liabilities. Kongolo has shown he's a decent player, we might have to take a hit on Mbenza and/or Diakhaby so we should try not to do so with Kongolo.

If Fulham beat Brentford there's no way Kongolo will come back to Town...he sees a chance for the PL again and Fulham will be £100m+ better off...they'll put an offer in
incidentally, did kongolo come back to town for his rehab, has he been seen around the club at all ?
