Amazing footage from just before we won the world Cup. Usual town heartbreak though

Great stuff.I’m somewhere in the Cowshed,no doubt thinking typical Town.Quigley was a big out for us.Although he improved over time,Steve Smith never seemed to have much of an impact on a game.I never rated Gilliver but on checking,I read that he managed to score 18 goals in 27 games that season compared to Leighton who had 11 from 27.A decent return from both of them.Frankie Frankie Worthington would soon be on the scene.

Cheers for posting this. A bit before my time but very interesting.
I like the camera angle from behind the away end. Bit of a contrast with the multi angles you get from Sky these days!

It is interesting isn't it. But more for the "how life was" aspect rather than for any footballing excellence. Serves to inform that standards of football are unrecognisable now from then. Which is guess we knew anyway. Both teams playing chuckle brothers football.. To me to you, despite being afforded huge amounts of space in the middle of the park. The pitch is pretty basic. Great to see the paddock in front of the main stand. And the face the terraces go down so low to the pitch

My first ever Town defeat, after 16 games (10 wins and 6 draws). Remember it well. Seen that video plenty times before. My dad and me were in the cowshed.

Not that we "never" play Coventry but our last lague game was relegation season of 71/72 (so before my time) then we've had a League Cup 2nd Rd game in 77/78 and a pre Season Friendly after Lee Clark bought Robbie Simpson* from them in 2009/10 - I would say that's as good as we never play them. Highfield Road is one of the few grounds I've never been to, likewise the Ricoh and given they now ground share with Birmingham I'm not likely to either.
* I've just checked up on Simpson, he only had 4 goals in 61 appearances when LC splashed out big money (£300k) for him, I know he didn't score in the league for us but was surprised he only made 13 appearances before leaving, he's now player manager of Chelmsford City.

You might well hold the record for a living Town fan for longest run before you saw your first defeat, on the other side if the coin I know someone whose first Town match was "that one" at Maine Road, hopefully his record will never be beaten.

We had some big crowds in the 65/66 season the biggest was against Man City just short of 32,000. Different era completely.

Yes, 16 games. I know that for a fact because I have always kept a record of games attended. Still do it. In all the time I’ve been watching football I only ever saw one team score 10 when Ashford Town (Middlesex) beat Woodford United 10-0 seven years ago. Only seen two league games where a team scored 8, Bradford City v Bournemouth 8-1 in 1970 and Leyton Orient v Colchester 8-0 in 1988. Highest scoring game Barnet’s first ever league game, lost 4-7 at home to Crewe in 1991. Seen Town score 7 only twice in over 900 games, v Lincoln United and Crystal Palace!

You go to a lot more neutral games than me, I saw both those and also the Port Vale one, however as I said to go 16 without a defeat is some achievement for a Town fan.

Ive just been Reading an old 'SOCCER REVIEW' - forerunner to 'FOOTBALL LEAGUE REVIEW' for those who can remember them This particular one was for early 1966, when the League was considering restructuring reserve team football into regions (which they ultimately did). Reference is made in the article to the fact that Coventry City - then a First Division side - regularly pulled in attendances of 7000 for 2nd team games, a staggering number given the problems of today's game.

That is what happens when you move away from Birstall to go to Uni and never return to live! Well remember going to pick up the Philadelphia Enquirer when I was living in the States to see Town had beaten Port Vale 7-1. By then I’d been supporting Town 15 years and apart from a 5-0 v Sheff Wednesday in a friendly I’d never seen Town score more than 4 in a game. I missed the 6-0 win v Boro in 66 or 67.

We played them in a friendly about ten years ago. Think it was 0-0 I got to the ground 20 minutes late and left at half time.
I was on a lunch break from work.

That was the Robbie Simpson Friendly I mentioned earlier, apart from newcomers like Crawley I doubt we've gone so long without playing another team in competitive football.

Coventry have now been officially promoted from League One, so if the jinx of us not meeting in the league for almost 50 years is to continue, it's over to you Town...…......surely not???

When Cov were relegated from the Premier league Town were relegated on the final day of the season when it seemed we were all but safe , only for the footballing gods to conspire against us. I’ve lived here for 35 years and never seen Town play City , they were relegated the season we beat the blades at Wembley, if we do stay up what’s the betting it’s early in the 20/21 season and so behind closed doors 🤬🤬🤬

Been there twice, not bad.

Hopefully they’ll be able to reach an agreement on the rent that will bring City “home”

I didn’t fear it as bad before lockdown but I don’t like our over reliance on so many players who won’t be here next season, probably more concerned with avoiding an injury than relegation. Still fear our lack of goals. Hope I’m wrong as it would be an absolute catastrophe to suffer relegation again. Let’s face it as Melc says, it’s what we do - get relegated so we can bemoan for 50 years how the EFL screwed us over by completing the season this way yet allowing L1 to end using PPG. I for one think football is about the supporters and no games should be played until we can get behind our team from the stands on a match day. Our support would make a difference in the run in.

I was a spotty teenager at the time, but I remember that Coventry game very well. It was billed as a promotion decider, but in the end neither of us went up.
