Call me naive if you like but I thought young kids where least likely to be racist these days as there are more BAME kids at school. And being anti racist is part of their education system.

Words fail me. At the age of 12 he probably thought it would be funny. However, at the age of 12 he is clearly old enough to know the difference between right and wrong. Sadly, these things are very often learnt in the family home and someone else in his family probably thought it was funny as well. How do we ever hope to move on as a nation and as a society when people like this exist?

"Mistake" this young lad hasn't just said something racist, he's taken the time to put a little collage together and send it via social media.I agree he needs education though as we probably all do

This isn’t a 12 year old in retaliation and said something out of order. He’s gone out of his way to purposefully insult in an extreme manner purely based on their skin colour. What was the kid expecting? To make all that effort and hope Zaha didn’t see it and get no reaction? He knew what he was doing and unless we as a society and those of authority come down hard on this kind of thing, nobody will ever learn.

Young kids don’t just dream up this kind of hatred. I’d guess he’s been raised in an environment where this is normal and expressing it is seen as a badge of honour. His age makes the whole episode even more horrific.
No one is doubting he is in the wrong but on a certain level he is a victim of abuse also.

Young enough to claim naivety as a defence. Young enough to be shaken to his bones with a punishment and start a learning process.
Better that than he carries on as he is and gets his face altered when he’s older by saying the wrong thing to the wrong person.

We don't let 12 year olds buy cigarettes, alcohol or glue, because we know they can't be trusted with them. But we give 12 year olds a social media platform to be a hateful tool. They shouldn't have the access to do this and for that we should also be holding the parents responsible. Not sure what is to be gained by prosecuting the boy, as it will probably just make his life more difficult than it needs to be, in terms of being educated and employed. He needs some re-education. Also a bit harsh to ban a twelve year old for life from going to football. Five year ban might fit, but re-education programme plus an enforced meeting with a black Villa player, might be a more effective rehabilitation.

Not happy but can accept some of the older generations are set in their ways. What has gone on in this kid's young life thats lead to him not only creating this shite but then sending it to someone else? The language and image selection bother me. Really sad. Hope the kid learns some serious lessons from this and ultimately why it isn't acceptable in this day and age.

But to sympathise on the grounds he said bad stuff too. Well I don't remember sending a back man a picture of "coon flakes" when I was 12. I don't any friends doing it. I don't recall anyone doing it actually. I cannot in any way sympathise towards this young person. In much the same way I struggle to sympathise with the slightly older kids who ridiculed the autistic black kid in Holmfirth the other week. Society has a real problem with racism. The BLM thread is illustrative of why

The BLM thread is illustrative of why Society does have a problem with racism. In all societies, the powerful and rich take advantage of the weak and the poor, and the majority abuses the minorities. The only issue I have with the BLM campaign is that is the focus currently is all encompassing and drowns out other minority groups. I do think we are storing up problems by ignoring the interests of other minority/"weak" groups, e.g the forgotten working classes in under invested northern towns. The General Election brought them briefly into focus, but with Coronavirus and BLM, they have faded into the background again. If they do not get the representation, then I fear there will be a growth in support for the far right, which will ultimately impact BLM negatively.

You have to be 13 to register an account on Twitter, maybe the social platforms should take more responsibility for enforcing adherence to their policies?? There’s far too much harmful content out there that an 8, 9, 10, 11 or indeed 12 year old doesn’t have the awareness and life skills to deal with and be influenced by...they need protecting from it (although this individual is obviously a vile little sod who is going to quickly learn the meaning of regret). 12 year olds should be on Club Penguin not Twitter or Pornhub.

Everybody here is against racism of any kind whatsoever.
No suprise that my complaint here is against the BBC ! I suspect that is the first place Zaha or more likely his agent would have run too.
Obviously extremely bad by the child to say that about anyone ( and very silly to say it about Zaha ) but arresting him for calling a footballer a black c..t merits a news item in itself for the BBC yesterday ? Come on. It wasn't front page news on any of the national papers that I could see.
Discuss...should the BBC think it more newsworthy than the physical abuse of a child, the death of a family in a road accident or the loss of 500 jobs somewhere ?

Whilst I agree with you that the social media platforms have to take more responsibility for underage people using it, it's not always easy to do. People just put a different date of birth on there so they appear to be old enough. There also needs to be much more responsibility taken by parents. In most cases, not only do they condone their children having accounts whilst underage, they actively encourage it.
