Dave cowling, and guess at Darryl Pugh 1/2 Daryl Pugh is the sensible guess (by far the most substitute appearances that season) but for some reason not that night. PS What I hadn't realised (until just now) was that all Eleven regular starters started at least 40 games that season. That can't have happened that often at any club. Peter Valentine ?

Unai Emery has managed 3 teams with Villa in their name, Sevilla, Villareal and Aston Villa. I wonder if he's lived in a villa in each town? An exotic Med villa in Aston....mmmmm.

Another good guess, 5 appearances that season. TBH would have preferred a Huddersfield lad to have been on the bench it might have meant more to him.

As you say it was a settled side that played every week, only one sub and they didn't get a game every week. Last guess micky laverick.

Town were the first club to play in all four divisions in two separate grounds. Only one other club has matched that - which one?

Well done. Did you know or a guess? Given most history books list subs who actually appeared this is probably hard to look up. I only knew because I had the Examiner cutting on my wall as a student and kept it. Spotted this fact last time I looked at it (possibly the 35th anniversary). Surprised me. Strange (to me at least) one of the biggest games in many supporters of a certain age's lifes and the unused sub played so little for us.

I started watching in 1979 and remember Greenwood being on the bench but hardly playing (he was a striker, with a beard as I remember), where as the aforementioned Bernard Purdie (essentially a left back) played more. Great memories - is it me or did football see more fun back then?

All the crap , dull bits get lost from the memory banks over the years. I started watching town in 79 too ( after watching Leeds for a couple of years previously ) Was your first game the Pompey game in October like me? Think that was a lot of fans first game.

I hadnt even caught sight of the pitch and I was knocked down a flight of those old rickety wooden steps that went up the back of the main terrace by a load of Pompey fans who came piling out of the doorway at the top. remember thinking.. what is this place!!.. I never had this at nice, calm Elland road!

You know me glass half full, look back to learn or smile. My fist game was 23rd October away at Northampton Town - lost 4-2 My first home game was home to Hereford Utd - lost 1-0 Thankfully it got better. I have posted this on here before, I have never lived in the Town and my shortest journey to a home game is the one I have now, 75 miles. Now does this make me any more of a fan? Not at all, but probably certifiable. Joking aside despite the lows it has been a pleasure to follow this club. If they suddenly didn't exist, as was nearly the case, I think that would be the end for me and football.

Only one other club has matched that - which one? Brentford? I googled that to see if they'd played somewhere else before Griffin Park. The new stadium is too new, unless you're trying to put a curse on them?

I started watching town in 79 too ( after watching Leeds for a couple of years previously disapointed ) Was your first game the Pompey game in October like me? Think that was a lot of fans first game. I think you're right on that first line, probably the case for so many things TBF. The game is being engineered to favour bigger clubs though, that's why football was a little more enjoyable for me back in the day. The playing field was never perfectly level, but it wasn't anywhere close to being as skewed as it is nowadays.

That Pompey game was eventful. They came in the back of the terrace and all hell let loose.
Don’t remember anything about the match itself just buzzing as a 15 year old as I ran off, then ran back, then ran off again …. Strange days back then but a lot of laughs were had …. UTT

Definitely more fun then , you could get folk deciding to go in the pub and it would only cost about the same as 3 pints, the You could decide to go away on the morning of the game . It's so sterile now.

We lost 7 league games all season and your first home and away games were two of them. I'm a kindred spirit; first home game 0-3 v Rotherham, first away 0-1 at Wolves.

[Did Peter Willis really ref the Portsmouth match in 1979? I remember that, when we were 3-0 down, one of our group shouted that 'of course the ref's a Geordie' - my future wife from Newcastle was with us - but Willis was from County Durham and, believe me, we would have put our mate right about where you have to come from to be a proper Geordie. A few years ago my wife and I cycled from Wylam (where Shearer plays his golf) to Newcastle along the north bank of the Tyne and back again on the south bank. During the return trip my wife kept saying 'this just doesn't feel right'.]

They slipped down there quite recently, still recovering really…

Totally forgot about him, looked like van gogh, him and Kevin stonehouse were both shit I recall. Probably unfair but they were following on from Robins Fletcher and Kindon. Like Tracy Austin who was shit .

Like Tracy Austin who was shit . Front row, very far right end. And Terry Austin's stats were never as bab as you'd like to remember. We've had strikers who were far, far worse and who didn't get anywhere near as much abuse. (This was discussed recently on another thread)

Austin came down the tunnel and it was pissing down, he turned round and went back in the dressing room. The rest of the team were out on the pitch. Soft twat. He did score mainly away games too I think, less abuse perhaps.

Two at Walsall on his debut and two more at Blackpool (and two at Portsmouth in the next to the last game when it was too late). You're right that he mainly scored away from home and that he was a soft twat.

I was in the East Terrace right near the away end and that terrace charge was nothing short of ferocious, especially to a 9 year old. Mi dad didn't bat an eyelid. I'd already planned our escape route down the banking at the back of the stand.
1-3
Punk with green spikey hair going proper apeshit in the away end. Eye opener.
Sutton Hanvey Hart Robins Laverick? Brown Cowling Starling Lillis
I'll know the rest once I've found my programme. I know Slapps can name the whole team.
