A little surprisingly, I think (& hope) he's only the third of the first Town team I ever saw (15/08/70 - I didn't look it up) to pass.
Follows Mcgill & Cherry.
May all three RIP & I hope the rest live much longer.

Once again (after Peter Lorrimer the other day) sadness rules. Of the same generation as Frank, I sort of assumed that there would be another of similar skill along soon (this WAS the age of Best, Cruyff, Currie, Bowles, Marsh, et al!!!) I'm still waiting... I never "walked a million miles" but I did see plenty of his goals. UTT

A very dark day in our history. To put it in simple terms, we've lost the greatest player ever to wear the blue and white. I still have his autograph from 1970 and I will never be parted with it. RIP the legend that is Frankie. Lineker used to clean his boots! Quite agree. The greatest player I've ever seen play for Town. RIP Frankie.

One of the all time greats who never got the England caps he deserved So many great maverick players of that era , Frank, Stan Bowles Tony Currie Alan Hudson Should have all had many more caps RIP Frank. Only wish he could have played for Stoke Stoke must have the been the only club he didn't play for.

Just read an article in our local paper by Alan Hudson Apparently they were big mates and Stoke did try to sign him but Hudson couldn’t persuade him to come. Pity that There’s a thread on the Oatcake with some good memories by Stoke fans Funny how some players were universally liked by even the most ardent opposition fans. Frank was definitely in that category

After a tough game against L"""ds in 1971 (0-0), Frank was straight up to the Nags Head for a gargle. He was happy to chat with everyone. My (then) missus got his autograph. It got lost for some reason and she wrote to him at Leicester to ask for another. He replied straight away with a nice little note. A bit of a 'lad', a solid bloke and, as everyone says, what a player and a trove of memories.

Like many, I was born just a little too late to have seen Frank play for us but I can remember him playing for other clubs later on his career. I was never under any illusion just how good a player he was and it’s fair to say he was revered by our fans and rightly so. The suggestion to name a stand after him, as has been mentioned, should be looked at and given very serious consideration, what a fitting tribute. I have his book and it’s a great read which I would highly recommend. He used to sit very close to us in more recent times on match days and given his quite frail state, was back in his seat before the 2nd half kicked off but if you turned to acknowledge him, you’d always get a thumbs up like it still mattered long after retirement that he was recognised by the fans. They definitely don’t make them like him nowadays. RIP

Having now let this awful news sink in, it’s great to read so many tributes to the great man. Putting aside his off field antics for a second, what’s apparent to me is that he’s probably the only Town player in my lifetime that was sprinkled with stardust. For lots of kids like me at that time he was an absolute footballing hero.

The memories of him and the thoughts about him on here by Town fans and all over social media by everybody else are amazing.
My father watched him in during his time with Town and remembers him pretending to conduct the brass band at the promotion party.
He and all others at the time wished Frankie could cross the ball and be on the other end of it, to put it away himself...
I never saw him play, but like many others, I have met him a few times on corporate days at Town and other pubs! A genuine proper bloke.
RIP.

I couldn’t believe the sad news when it came through - I was fortunate to see him play - what a fantastic player. He played for many teams but for me Frankie Worthington will only ever mean Huddersfield Town - he was the reason that Huddersfield Town became my team and for that I will always be grateful to him. He will live long in the memory. RIP Frank - a true Huddersfield Town legend.

I remember when Frank was studio expert for the Big Match or whatever it was when we lost 10-1 at Man City.
4-0 down at half time he said the scoreline was not representative of the play (I WAS there and we hammered them for about 25 mins) and that he didn't see a score of 7 or 8 - he was not wrong!😄😄

Sad loss. I saw him on his debut away to Crystal Palace. He was a reserve, I'd never heard of him before.
The team came back on the same train as us from Kings Cross; he and the rest of them signed my programme. Still got it.

They should name a stand after him a tribute to a great town player. Been reading tributes from supporters from other clubs he played for and all unanimous in there love for him like us. I hope when we can all get back in the stadium there is a fitting tribute to him.

Thing is his `antics` didnt seem to hinder his career in a big way, he liked the clubs, the birds and all that goes with it, but i once read he never missed training and he was still actually playing non league in his early forties, thats a great testament to him and how he looked after himself, he had a ``proper and full`` career in the game.Think i only saw him play once and that was for Brighton at the Goldstone ground, we won 1-0, next club i saw him at was videotech in Huddersfield.

A sad day as I have lost one of my heroes, Frank Worthington, who was one of the stars of Town's Div 2 title winning side of 1969-70, which as a 15 year old at the time was a very important season to me. He also went to Hipperholme Grammar, leaving a couple of years before my first year at the school. His sister Julie was one of the best friends of my girlfriend at the time. I am fairly sure my brother Paul will have played against Frank and his brothers in the Halifax Red Triangle League before he broke into Town's first team. Living in Bolton, there will also be many memories for their fans. RIP Frank. Can you show me some evidence that he went to Hipperholme Grammar? I went there and he was never mentioned as an old boy of the school and he doesn't appear in the list of famous old boys on Wiki.

I never saw Frank play unfortunately , I missed a true footballing entertainer , something that we sadly lack in this modern era, RIP Frank.
I did bump into Frank once, at the Hare & Hounds (Hopton) I was on my post round and Frank was just leaving the pub as I was entering the pub, I said hello and asked if he was alright, He said fine thanks smiled and went to his car. I dropped off the post and suddenly realised I had been speaking to Frank Worthington , (I was in a hurry and had just assumed it was someone I had recognised from Mirfield), I came out of the pub and found myself mouthing the words Its Frank Worthington! Frank smiled and waved as he left in his car. I am a bit of a dimmo at times!

loved him as a player when i was a teenager he was only 7 years older than me , always had time to sign an autograph after a match, had the pleasure of sitting next to him at a function in east london about 20 years ago where he was the speaker , had a great 2/3 hours and his stories were brilliant , he didn't have much time for don revie when he was england manager !
absolute gent and great guy and didn't have a drop of booze the whole time he was there. RIP

Frank was a regular speaker for us at Almondbury United a great talker who would answer every question & sign every book & photo, he loved helping local football teams raise much needed funds. I would see him in Corals now & again in Town he always had a couple of tips to share from his racing contacts, last time I saw Frank was in the Waggon & Horses across from his home in Outlane, always had time for a few words. Watching & admiring Worthy from the terraces from 1970 was a joy, but the stand out moment for me was 8000+ Town fans chanting his name from a packed Lowfields end with a nervous Town defender (possibly David Burke) wondering weather to tackle our showboating hero.......his old mate Jimmy McGill passed away six years tomorrow, I'm sure you'll meet up. RIP Frankie.

Never saw him play as too young, but often saw him rolled out to complete half-time draws etc. In my early years of supporting Town I didn’t realise how important a figure he was, I grew to and his passing this week brought a tear to my eye.
RIP Frank, there’ll be a cutie with a pint awaiting you upstairs.

Actually, I’d forgot it myself, but he turned out for Stoke in our farewell match from the Victoria Ground. I’m a bit of a technophobe so don’t know how to put the picture up but it’s on the Frank Worthington thread on the Oatcake and there he is with Hudson Gordon Banks and a few other old timers looking great in his Stoke strip 😊

Saw Frank score away to Forest in both 70-71 and 71-72 seasons, if I recall correctly with a right foot guide into the bottom left and with a header. Then not for a long time until he was playing with Brum and volleyed one past Shilton, also at Forest. Before that match he was warming up in front of us at the Bridgford end, with a few shots for the keeper to save and a few into the goal. In those days the linesmen used to make a massive song and dance about checking that the nets were secure at the back. When the linesman entered the goal Frank suddenly blasted one really hard into the top corner, not to hit him but just to startle him and give us all a laugh as he apologised for the 'accident'.

This is amazing. Firstly the respectful tweet from Liverpool, speaking on behalf of all fans, and this remarkable picture of Bill Shankly shaking Frank's hand and looking longingly at him after he was already a Leicester player
