One of the all time greats who never got the England caps he deserved So many great maverick players of that era , Frank, Stan Bowles Tony Currie Alan Hudson Should have all had many more caps RIP Frank. Only wish he could have played for Stoke Meanwhile England failed to qualify for two world cups with the likes of Frank and others you mention rarely getting in the side. RIP.

Frank was a regular speaker for us at Almondbury United a great talker who would answer every question & sign every book & photo, he loved helping local football teams raise much needed funds. I would see him in Corals now & again in Town he always had a couple of tips to share from his racing contacts, last time I saw Frank was in the Waggon & Horses across from his home in Outlane, always had time for a few words. Watching & admiring Worthy from the terraces from 1970 was a joy, but the stand out moment for me was 8000+ Town fans chanting his name from a packed Lowfields end with a nervous Town defender (possibly David Burke) wondering weather to tackle our showboating hero.......his old mate Jimmy McGill passed away six years tomorrow, I'm sure you'll meet up. RIP Frankie. Tips? Frank could not tip his hat. He was a hopeless mug punter but loved a bet. One time we were in the bookies and i went in the back room. A kerfuffle started and i go back to see Frank squaring up to this black lad with gold teeth, a local pusher but not hard...there was a bit of argy-bargy and threats...i separated them and i calmed him down and i went back to writing out my footy bets. Next thing kicks off again, wild swinging punches, a bit of mild strangulation. Again i intervene, its like the three scousers from Harry Enfield. Black lad leaves. "What was it all about" i ask Frank? "He was looking over my shoulder at my bets" says Frank. "Fuck me Frank" i say, they are all £1 donkeys anyway!!!" He was a card....and already missed.

I will bet you all that I must have been the only person ever to have been invited into Frank’s car at Elland tip to discuss the managerial attributes of Lee Clarke.
RIP fella. You were right. I wasn’t.

I wasn’t. Frank once made me burst out laughing....he said "you know what, i should never have given up the managers job at Mildenhall". Now, apologies, it may not have been Mildenhall but it was some obscure backwater village with a similar name. "Whys that" i replied. "Because from that i would have become England manager" he continued. He could be obtuse but a lovely man and i only wish i had spent more time in his company. He was just cool...and so few people are cool.

Does anyone know when the funeral is? I'm guessing there might be one or two turn out on the route to say a last farewell... socially distanced of course.

For the record Frank was simply the most skilful player I ever saw in a Town shirt. I first began watching Town in the Second Division title winning year of 1969-1970. What a season to begin the love affair for life! I never went to an away game and was limited to only Saturday afternoon matches as I was not old enough to be out at such a late hour as 9 0'clock at that time. It did change though in the seasons back in the old First Division. The Southampton match sticks out where Town won 3-1 and went to the top of table just as they did under Wagner when we beat Newcastle at home.
Anyway back to Frank. My memories of him are mostly connected to grey, dark Saturdays like the Birmingham City victory when we won 2-0 in 1970. His partnership with Jimmy Lawson who I also admired at that time. And of course that fantastic game against West Ham in the FA Cup Fifth Round. We have still not gone further than the quarter finals of that year which is quite remarkable really. And when Frank left I cried and was despondent for years after. One bright moment was the Tony Leighton testimonial when Frank donned the blue and white stripes again. I was in the Cowshed when they sang adoringly at him. He responded I think by ending up in the net or something with some ex-Leeds player or current Leeds player. We loved him for that.
It really is a sad day when one of your boyhood heroes dies because it takes something from your own identity as a person. I never became a Frank follower after he left Town, to be honest I was too busy being upset that he had gone along with Cherry. I became obsessed then with Alan Gowling who replaced Frank in the pantheon of adoration. Looking back we did well to sign Gowling as he was a thoroughly decent player and one that shone at Town and then Newcastle later. But he was never in Frank's league because quite simply nobody was.

Gowling carried the team during that time. I agree were lucky to get him.

What we were crying for was the dream combination of Gowling alongside Worthington, Ian Greaves finally managed it several years later at Bolton with excellent effect. Not enough money in those days either.

There was the money. The Board was reluctant to spent it. Ever get that strange feeling of deja vu?

Now I know there is more footage of him with lcfc than us but surely we could have done something ? Instead httv put out a video asking o brien and toffolo who is better at arm wrestling

I can understand that and they must have that choice But I hope they know just how much love there is out there for Franky Some thing enroute or drive by the old Leeds road (or Jonny's) 😚 would be good

My money is on the family at least letting people (examiner etc) know the route the hearse will take to wherever old Frankie is bound for.

Terrible that his wife is financially in difficulties. Meanwhile we have wastes of space like Mbenza, who isn’t fit to kiss Frankie’s left foot, swanning around in his Lamborghini. It’s not right.

Or you could say its a warning to the younger generations of the perils of gambling? Sad but true. I lived up Lindley for about twenty years and often saw big Frank either going in or coming out of JP's..

I'm afraid Youtube won't allow this to be copied directly, but I've managed to put a link in. A great interview with Frank, and footage of the game at Turf Moor in 1970. We played some good football didn't we? link
