Nothing lucky about it if you ask me. Chelsea by any definition other than the bloke down the pub are far too big to fail. London club, major earner for Sky, other broadcasters, bookmakers, etc. from here to Beijing. Nobody anywhere was ever going to shrug their shoulders & say "unlucky lads but there you go." Lucky, as in - if the reports are correct - the new owners have settled the £1.6bn (!!) debt to Abramovich. That rather inflates the cost of a business that isn't particularly profitable. Besides which, Chelsea's current profile doesn't reflect the majority of their history. No you're correct it doesn't, but it does reflect a current reality, which I think is more to do with their value to, shall we say, PL stakeholders than the value of the club as a going concern. I can't imagine for a minute that the powers that be would have stuck AFC Chelsea in the Southern Counties League & been happy enough to replace them with Burnley...or even lil old Huddersfield as 3rd placed Championship team.

Big city clubs are what the power brokers want. It probably frustrates places like Derby who aren’t really in that bracket. Their nearest rivals are attractive mainly for the European Cup era, it gives the monotonous commentators something to drone on about next season. But in the grand scheme of things, it’s either big city clubs, or clubs who are prepared to sell their souls to live the dream. I would put a third E Midlands team into that last bracket as well.
The football power base has been London and the NW for a while, with the occasional interlopers. I’m not sure that even the Brum clubs would make the list if they had a choice to put together a franchise competition.

Oh, I understand and agree that it's a current reality; it's just that the value of the club is at least double what it should probably be, given the amount of debt an oligarch placed on his personal plaything / vanity project. PL stakeholders won't have contributed to that cost - my argument is that they found buyers with extremely deep pockets. I suspect TV revenues are going to massively drop at some point in the next few years - in which case the buyers' risk/reward analysis may be massively flawed. That, and the fact that football clubs probably aren't the smartest investment!

At lot of us on here felt he conducted himself very well in the home game this season-didn’t get rattled by early adversity and quickly re organised -Mu opinion of him went up that day I don’t think he will ever be England manager but I wish him well if he leaves

Does that mean they're just Derby County again now?
Are they dropping the WR from the official club initials?

Will be England manager within the next 12 months Handling a "Backs to the wall" nothing to lose low expectation situation is simply light years away from the pressures of being England manager. I've been impressed but don't believe he even merits consideration yet... ...not to say he might one day.

Imagine that, being investigated for actually giving money away, as opposed to pilfering it.
Regardless of whether he was going to get it back or not.

You could be talking about a number of organisations in that statement, from the FA to the Met and all the way up to number 10. It's pretty much the blueprint of society.

Deal with Clowes all but done. Local businessman, long time supporter of the club. Not sure if he's the Dean Hoyle of Derby but at least it's not some asset stripping chancer. They have got a tough few weeks ahead to get a squad / coaching staff together to start the season with, it will probably hamstring them from a real chance of getting back to Championship at first attempt. I expect their budget will be massively reduced.

Sounds like it might be "through" his agent which may be the issue if it was agreed when Rooney was manager and deemed to be giving an agent undue influence over the club.
