If you dont try to win a game its likely that you wont. Letting the Italians have the ball wasnt the problem, it's how far we let them come with it, far too often and then having no out ball or obvious inclination to counter attack. Allowing 2 older centre backs to go 120 minutes without being run at or turned is a complete mystery to me. You get to a final, you get a very early goal and then you try to just spoil the next 88 minutes, with the attacking talent and the pace we have sitting on the bench? Best chance we have had since 66 and we had the squad and the start but failed ultimately due to trying to get away with doing just enough.

We didn’t even try. Two ageing centre backs on yellow cards and rashford and sancho on the bench. If he was going to bring them on to take penalties why not give them at least 15 mins to get on the pitch, get on the ball and run at the Italians. Southgate managed the spirit of the team really well. Tactically he is inept and it is no surprise that he struggled at club level. And especially when Rashford was stripped and ready to come on at half time in ET. Awful management. Can you imagine how foolish they would have looked, delaying the double sub at the end, if Italy had played keep ball for the last two minutes or so they wouldn’t have got on, (Ironically it could of course changed the course of history as two other players might have scored in their place)

Grealish come out on Twitter to say that he wanted to take one. Southgate chose the takers.

The lads have done us proud we just got out played by far better players in midfield never let us get settled total control by the Italians. Somebody said on the radio that Kalvin Phillips touched the ball more than anyone - and that 92% of his passes were sideways or backwards ! Someone on the radio was wrong. Shaw, Stones and Maguire all touched the ball more than him. He continued to be a massive let down for me. Had a cracker of a game v Croatia, but just got worse with every passing game. He looks to be well out of his depth technically and physically at this level, and his enthusiasm seemed to totally evaporate over the last few weeks. With Leeds he seems to be really actively involved in breaking up play and turning it into attacking possession with decisive zipping short passes mixed up with probing long balls, with England he seems to spend all his time being too far ahead or too far behind play, and with not being really at the top level, he just looks sluggish and ponderous in possession and movement when sharing the pitch with actual international class players. Its not as though he's a young lad who is going to improve, if we want a successful (quarter finals+) World Cup next year then he surely won't be playing.

Southgate got it totally wrong in this game with the attacking quality and talent in the squad should have gone for it instead cautious as always trying to defend a lead against a good Italian side, could take being beaten by a better side if we had a go but this stale rubbish I can't accept. As for the penalties have sympathy for the lads that missed they were left like lambs to the slaughter. Why isn't Henderson saying no I will stay on and take one as a experienced pro,why doesn't he let Grealish take one. And if they have been practicing penalties I'm a Dutchman why not all take them like Kane and Maguire put your foot through it and in the corner trying to outthink the keeper doesn't work. Nothing will change for next world cup we will eventually go out without a whimper yet again

Declan Rice completed the most dribbles in the whole team last night. He made the most tackles. He played 74 minutes out of 120.
Unless he was truly knackered it made no sense at all to bring him off. He didn't look it to me.

Wow - Grealish has tweeted that he asked to take one, and Gareth didn’t select him. Unbelievable

Just one of the many mistakes Southgate made last night.

We went to 2 x defensive lines and the rest is history. Quite shocking to think about to be honest as this game was winnable. I deffo do not blame Saka for his effort/missed penalty. At least he hit the target unlike some. Which sadistic mofo thought it would be a good idea to have the kids taking penalties?

Disappointing. Poor management from Southgate. Just bad decision after bad decision. We were lucky with the teams we came up against until last night.
Oh well. We had interest in a tournament for longer than we usually do.

Poor from Southgate last night after a decent enough first half. The tactics and substitutions were all wrong and the decision on the penalty takers even worse.
Moving forward, hopefully he'll get a different voice in his backroom team for the World Cup. Steve Holland, Graeme Jones and Chris Powell - I'm not sure how much influence Chris Powell has but that lad should really be no where near the touchline for a European Championship final.

Despite what happened last night, I enjoyed the tournament. Some really good, entertaining games. Italy were very good in patches and definitely did enough to beat a poor England on the night. Spain played them off the park in the semi and should have won comfortably though. If they can find a striker who can find the net, the Spaniards will be the team to beat in Qatar. Expectations will be high for England, but they are unlikely to be presented with such a good opportunity to win a major competition again.

It didn't work, embarrassingly poor compared to Rice.

I’m not ashamed to be English, but I’m ashamed that “they” are. The abusers, the rioters, the wankers who claim national pride but haven’t got pride in how they behave, how they present themselves. Unfortunately the standards and morals of the “throw away society” that we now find ourselves in the middle of. It seems success is owed without putting the hard graft in first. I feel proud to be English this morning. Id rather focus my feelings on the 99.9% who came together in spirit and unity across all divides for a common goal ( and we have been a divided country recently for various reasons ) and conducted themselves in a decent, honourable way, than focus on the 0.1% of wankers who can't. Tbf it’s not only here where it happens, I was in Madrid when Spain and Real won trophies and the vast majority were on the streets having a joyful celebration but it ended with the police firing tear gas at idiots by the end of the night. Same happened in Paris during the 2018 WC I believe. Alcohol and nobheads will always be a recipe for disaster.

(Helmet on) Rashford and Sancho although young I would agree that they are mature enough and experienced enough in big games. Saka no though, if he has to take one further down the line you can't do anything about that but to be nominated to take the 5th was silly.
