Now that all this has begun to seem like a distant memory, can I offer my honest opinion on the match, completely shorn of any expectations of what might have been the right thing to say, in the immediate aftermath?
I think Chiellini won it for Italy. That foul on Saka, who had in that moment given him the slip and might have been 1v1, was fully intended to not only deny the chance but also to humiliate and I think that affected Saka’s composure when it came to taking that crucial penalty.
It’s hard to begrudge him for it. Some of our lads are modern day superheroes, but we still aren’t savvy enough to win trophies.

By the letter of the law it was a yellow but something needs to happen with that . Tackles where theres no intent to win the ball or cynical cheating should be straight reds

The one on Grealish however was far worse and must have been very, very close to being a red card.

It is the raising of the arm that makes it a red. A shirt pull at normal hand level can be a yellow with raised arm to neck there is intent at whole new level. If I did that I would expect a deserved red.

The possibility of a red card from the incident was the danger of serious injury to the opposition player. Reckless. Red card.

The shirt pull was a yellow.
The foul on Grealish was a red.

The shirt pull was a yellow. The foul on Grealish was a red. That was a shocker of a tackle on Grealish. Seems to have slipped under the radar though, in favour of discussing the Chiellini one.
