Add Schofield to Scott High as well - an England youth international and we’ve not brought through too many of those.

From what I have seen of Danny Grant, he's not better and no worse than Brahima Diarra, who most will know I am his biggest fan. However, Brahima is not ready for first team championship football yet and neither is Danny Grant. Ettiene Camara and Pat Jones are ahead of both of them and thus getting chances with the first team. Brahima went to Harrogate last year and smashed it. They have been trying to get him back all summer according to their manager, but I think we probably wanted to get him a League 1 loan, however, he got injured and that scuppered those plans. I recon he'll go out in January. If Danny Grant can go and do what Brahima did, then maybe in January we'll move him to a League 1 club. Let's just see how he does. Just because a lad does well in the B team does not mean he's ready for Championship football. Kian Harratt and Kieran Philips have been smashing goals in for the B team, but neither of them are Championship standard strikers...........yet. Brodie Spencer has played 3 times for the full Northern Ireland team, but against Preston he showed that he's not ready yet for the Championship. bobrobterrier, I know you are Grant's biggest fan, as I am Diarra's, but don't let that cloud your judgement Great post. It’s easy from the outside to suggest a player is good enough, ready or “can’t be any worse”. I know a lot of folk hate to trust the club’s judgement, but sometimes you have to. I’d rather have a bit of patience with Grant and him reach his full potential, than rush him and go backwards. I know for a fact, Scott High has been very highly rated throughout the academy but he was put in too early and wasn’t ready. I think the problem was that we had a bang out kf form Koroma sat on the bench blocking the kids pathway. Pat Jones coming in is a major plus.

18 year old Luke Mbete has come here from Manchester City, hasn’t kicked a ball professionally in mens football. He’s signed for us to play, no way are Manchester City sending him here to watch from the bench. How is he ready to play yet 22 year old Danny Grant who played 60 games for Bohemians is. We even played Koroma ahead of Grant who looked neither interested or fit to cut the pitch let alone kick a ball on it. This untested in the championship doesn’t wash for me, not when we’ve signed Mbete. There's been a lot of hype about Grant without anything of note to back it up. Both Schofield and Carlos clearly feel that he's not yet up to Championship standard and playing in the League of Ireland is probably akin to National League level at best. Mbete recently played for Man City in a friendly at Barcelona and I doubt they'd have signed him up until 2027 if they didn't rate him. Levi Colwill was only 18 when we signed him and he'd had no previous first team experience. This attitude is rotten. Would Gateshead qualify for the Europa Conference League mate? Would AFC Fylde beat PAOK, one of the biggest Greek sides? Would Maidstone beat Motherwell in 2 games over 2 legs?

Surely, allowing Grant to play first-team football out on loan is a good thing - he can prove himself with no risk to our first team (not that the first team has been good this season, it just hasn't needed any additional excuses to be poor).

If the Irish League is significantly better than the National League then it doesn't say much for Grant's progress then as he's only now playing in one step above.

I’m an avid watcher of the LOI and he is the best product to come out of it since probably Seamus Coleman. That’s my opinion. And there are lads from the league who have gone over this summer and kicked on straight away (Burns at MK Dons, Kelly at Rotherham, and more). He has Europa League pedigree, Ireland U21 international alongside the likes of Nathan Collins, Bazunu, Obafemi, Parrott. The ONLY thing that held him back was his torrid luck with injury and illness. I am fairly certain once it’s all said and done and we look back on his career, he will have had a decent one. You've named some good players there mate.. Benzunu was signed by Man City as as 17 year old. I believe he's had 2 loan spells in the EFL. He's also played for the ROI senior team 10 times. Obafemi has been in the Academies of Chelsea, Arsenal and Southampton, making his debut for Southampton as an 18 year old. He also made his debut for the ROI senior team as an 18 year old. Parrott was snapped up by Spurs as a 15 year old and made his debut for the Senior ROI Team as a 17 year old We didn't sign Grant until 4 days before his 21st birthday so you can't really compare Danny Grant to some of these. That's like comparing Ryan Schofield with Reece James, Harvey Barnes, Japhet Tanganga and David Brooks just because he was in the same England U20's Squad as them. Let me name some hot young RIO youth internationals of the past for you. Dave Campbell, played in the UEFA Cup Winners Cup Robbie Ryan, ROI Youth International who won Bronze Medal wit the U20's at the World Youth Championship, plus won 12 U21 International Caps Derek O'Conner RIO U21 International that also won Bronze Medal with the U20's at World Youth Championships Danny Kane ROI Youth International all the way up to U21's. ROI U17's International player of the year Thomas Heary ROI Youth and U21's International who played at the FIFA World Youth Championship Then there's Englishman Gary Haylock - Town Youth Player that we sent on loan to Shelbourne scoring 18 goal in 25 games, including a Hat-trick in his 2nd game. We then sold him to them and he made over 30 appearances in European club competition for LOI clubs, including the quarter final of the European Cup Winners Cup All of them Town players who had pretty dam impressive youth international careers / LOI careers, but none of them were ever really good enough for Town or any other English League Football. I'm not quite sure that being a top player in the LOI equates to being ready for Championship football. And Danny Grant's record in the LOI isn't exactly that impressive really. 17 Goals in 73 appearences. 1 in every 4.3 games. Plus he's only played in 3 ROI U21s. 18 Year Old Brodie Spencer has played as many for Northern Irelands senior team. You clearly rate the kid very very highly, as I do with Brahima Diarra. However, neither are ready for Championship football as yet. We've loaned 2 players to Championship clubs this season, so if anyone from the Championship wanted Grant, we'd have probably Loaned him there. Both Diarra and Grant are about the same level at the moment, which is about League 1. Both of them have the potential to be top top players. I've said before that I think Diarra will play in the premier league and internationally. Let's hope both he and Danny Grant do. UTT

There are occasions where players of exceptional talent become available, which by all accounts, Mbete is. Similar to the Colwill signing who is a class player. I’d agree that you can never tell if a player is ready until they have played but surely we have to trust the judgment of our coaches on this. Obviously, we haven’t seen I broadly agree. Although some were saying the same about Mipo Odubeko.

Despite scoring a few goals for the reserves - he’s totally untested in the Championship. If the club thought he was anywhere near ready to step up he’d still be here. If only he had another mercurial goalscoring winger in charge of picking the team 😕 Brian Horton was a tough tackling, uncompromising no-nonsense footballer and his team was as soft as shit. Lee Clark was a damned good midfielder in his day, bought 4653 midfielders and they were all shit. Cov City look a decent side but couldn't finish their dinner, Mark Robins was a decent striker in his day. Crisp Owl was an exceptional left back. He bought Jason Fucking Davidson. Glenn Hoddle rarely (if ever) picked the mercurial Matt Le Tissier. It doesn't always work out how you'd expect.

Oh so it’s so bad to be in the Europa Conference League yea? I’m sure if AFC Fylde were in the LOI, they’d be there. Suuuure. For a start AFC Fylde aren't in the National League premier division. What about Wrexham who just missed out on promotion to L2 last season and have enjoyed several European sorties in the past. I bet they'd give some of the LOI teams a run for their money. Shamrock will come up against some good teams in the Conference League, but its made up of teams like West Ham who qualified automatically because of their league position and teams who fell at the final hurdle of qualifying for the Europa League. The fact that Irish teams play in European competitions though is not because they are necessarily good, its because they get places like any other European country, such as Luxembourg who had four teams in the qualifying stages, with one of them reaching the third qualifying round before succumbing to former European cup finalists Malmo. I really hope Grant does make a success of his career at Town but there's been far to much hype as to how good this lad is, mainly based on his time in the aforementioned league.

Extremely competitive and there have been many occasions where I’ve though some of the lads could make it across the water. Danny Grant was massively rated in Ireland and he has been undone by injuries and bad luck. I really hope he takes his chance at Harrogate and comes back to us next season, raring to go.

Based on your logic anyone who rates player must be their relative no disrespect intended but having watched town for longer than that, our record of players coming from or going to the irish league doesn't do much to dispel the idea that we're overly dismissive of its quality. As well as the ones joburgjon listed, there's players like Jake Carroll and James Hand who weren't up to much with us, then the very average left back Robbie Williams who did well at LOI level after leaving us. And Kit Elliott seemed completely up to scratch while on loan at Cork, but I would be surprised if he goes to an English league club after being released by us this summer

I’ll tell you what though, there are some unpolished gems playing in that league that could deffo flourish in a full time environment.

Thank you for posting, really interesting. Comes across (as he always did) as a really nice lad. Has plenty of positive things to say about Town and that can only be a good thing. I always hope we treat players well, if only so we have the moral high ground when it isn't reciprocated.
