Never thought of the Sad lads as being bigger than Rochdale or Scunny tbh We might not. But it's fair to say they have bigger crowds playing with higher expectations than Hartlepool, in a bigger stadium. And many fans /opposition players will see them as the big fish in that division and up their game against them. I can easily see why an aspiring young pro would be more "up" for a game in front of 10k at valley Parade compared to 3k in Hartlepool. They are way shitter than they seem to believe they are, but they aren't really Rochdale/Scunny-esque in scale š

Thought he spoke pretty well for a teenage lad speaking to the BBC. 7 goals in half a season from midfield is good going. Hope that weāre not burning too many bridges by tearing up loan agreements to send players elsewhere, but if itās best for player development then fair enough.

New contract for Kieran Phillips. Bit surprised as he doesnāt appear to have done a lot for Walsall (unless heās been injured?).

New contract for Kieran Phillips. Bit surprised as he doesnāt appear to have done a lot for Walsall (unless heās been injured?). He's played 31 times for them, mostly on either side of a front 3 and scored 5 goals. He's doing fine. The idea was to see how he could cope with playing week in, week out and he has coped admirably. Will probably be in the first team squad next season and able to cover all front 3 positions. Excellent interview with him after signing his contract. Didn't realise the 2 year layoff was due to a degenerative knee issue and he spent 3 months in bed. One hell of a drive and determination in him to succeed after that!

Spot on Crux, with the 2 year lay off he had and the nature of the injury, that could very well have been the end of his footballing career. He also had a few injuries since coming back to us. So as you say and as it says on the Town Website, this loan was testing him to see if he can play week in week out, including some Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday game weeks. When he first singed for us it was an Academy loan. Then I think we gave him a 1 year deal, then extended that and now we've given him a long term contract on the back of playing as many games as he has so far this season. All of that has nothing to do with the lads ability and everything to do with if he can physically cope with the demands of professional football after the injury he had. He's proved he can, so he get's the long term contract that his talent deserves.

KP is been played on the right hand side when he does start, they favour Miller through the middle. KP needs to play through the middle to get a better gauge on how he will fair

Excellent read. So much of the 'under the bonnet' stuff that goes on at Town we don't get to hear about, so that is really interesting. This helps us to understand the thinking behind loans, both in and out, and how this is a developing thing. Kieran Phillips contract has obviously happened partly because of his success at Walsall. It makes you realise more of our young players need to do this and the club is getting better at finding the right placements. You can see the link between bringing 16 and 17 year olds in, fitting them into the Academy, or B team, and the loan system. I think it really bodes well and is the best chance we have of getting players of enough quality to make a fist of it in the Premiership.

The loans out seem so much better this year, perhaps because the players are better, perhaps more clubs are realising that we have got a better set up, perhaps the club is taking the whole process more seriously.... whatever the reason(s), the loans seem to be going well.

Iāve been critical of Bromby for seemingly connections based transfers (rather than scanning for the best option), but Iām really coming around to liking what heās doing.
Laying a good foundation, moving with the times and importantlyā¦ sharing these insights with the fans. At a time when information out of the club is bit part, and the coach understandably just wants to get on with it, itās nice to have someone willing to do these in depth interviews.
And credit to the town writers at the examiner. I managed to read the whole thing despite the shocking website experience.

New contract for Kieran Phillips. Bit surprised as he doesnāt appear to have done a lot for Walsall (unless heās been injured?). I wondered the same. LoB & Jack Hunt had very successful loans lower down the pyramid before comin in & looking the business. Josh Koroma was nothing more than an occasional substitute at Rotherham though & he looked ok last season, so who knows?
