Think it’s safe to assume we all agree we’ve had some very good keepers at Town these last 25-30 years irrespective of who your personal favourite may be.

Can someone refresh my memory? Harper was the lad we got from Newcastle on loan?
I seem to recall the surname being something else, but it probably was Harper.

Steve Harper spent 20 years at Newcastle (including a few loans). A lad of his talent should have made far more than his 199 appearances for them, but he was understudy to Shay Given for most of his time there.

Could have played so many more games and would have probably got a few england caps if he'd moved clubs. Who were the england keepers in his era? David James.. Walker..Flowers.. Martyn ?

A very long way indeed! I saw Ray Wood at the back end of his time here. Along with Ray Wilson (both capped for England), he played in my first match, a 3-0 home defeat by Rotherham. Mike O'Grady, another England international, didn't play that day. John Oldfield followed Wood, of course, and, now I've googled him, I see that we sold him to First Division Wolves for £35,000 in 1969, so that's at least three keepers that we sold for cash. Both Wood and Oldfield ended their playing days at Valley Parade.

Tim Clarke, Scott Bevan, Vince Bartram, Joel Pereira.... We've had some absolute stinkers as well. Overall though TBF we have done comparatively well in that position.

Assuming the info on this link is correct (& it seems to be), I'd have to agree with you. Might have become a better keeper than Shay Given as well if he'd got more matches under his belt.

I remember when I first saw him play, looked immense between the sticks. Then he had to make a save! I moved quicker than him and I was about 5 stone overweight at the time

Perhaps I was lucky in which games I saw him, but Steve Harper was perhaps the best goalie I've seen at Town. Unbelievable how long he was 2nd at Newcastle.

If I was to say favorite and not necessarily the best, I would pick Alan Starling (the mooner) and Terry Poole (cos he most often gave the Cowshed a good )

I would add Sandy Kennon to rams list of keepers from the past. Some great memories in that list.

Ray Wood was never the same after the Munich plane crash as I remember him,had the shakes a bit, still not a bad goalie though, brilliant at Man U. I remember Singing Aye Aye Johnnie Oldfield clearly,Happy Days!

I thought Harry Gregg was the keeper ( famously saving people from the wreckage ) so was Wood there as the reserve keeper? One thing I didnt know until the other day was Ian Greaves would have been on the plane but for an injury he had at the time.

Ray was definitely on the Plane.as reserve goalkeeper,as were several outfield players who may have perished.
