Hi
Not one to rock the boat - I know the job is a thankless task and respect those of you currently doing it.
I have one question. Who made the decision to have DATM automatically change the word C U N T to "card" and why?
We had a vote on swearing in the past, and it was decided no profanity filter was needed. So why change it now?

So why change it now? I know it's a particularly offensive word to some people, but you could say that about any swear word really. Our Dan absolutely hates the word bastard, my mam hates the word pussy when related to womens' parts. I don't particularly hate ANY word, it's all just language to me and is very fluid in it's usage. Which is me clumsily trying to say I agree G  |

Quite simply, as a collective, we decided to instigate it as a trial to see if it would be noticed, and if it was, would there be objection to it. As with all things Graham, change occurs. It's not as simple to say swearing is allowed, you know some words carry more gravitas than others. In addition, before its suggested, we do not envisage a poll where people can cherry pick words from a humungous list.

Ok - but the poll allowed for the possibility of changing some words if the result of the poll was that swearing on here was unacceptable. downatthemac.proboards.com/thread/105990/datm-swearing-acceptable-board-poll And the result was that it was acceptable. If DATM users had wanted what you have chosen to do now, then the results of the poll would reflect it. I also find the sentence "we decided to instigate it as a trial to see if it would be noticed, and if it was, would there be objection to it." a bit troubling. |

Fair challenge Grim et al.
The decision to test the waters came at a time when there were a few spats abound on DATM and people were throwing the C word about like confetti. Bearing in mind we want to keep this forum welcoming to all, it was trialled to see how the change would work. It was never planned to be a permanent change; we are not so ignorant to think we can run roughshod over the forum members choices.
So yes, the trial has been run, we’ve seen the effects and naturally the Admin team will review the outcomes.
We are not trying to dampen debate or kill any passion shown in discussions, but for sure the use of such extreme profanities can be scaled back by more considered structure to arguments?
As always, constructive challenge of us is welcome. Keeps things fresh. 👍🏼

Always remember, you are custodians, not owners of DATM. Unquestionably, you do a fine and thankless job for zero reward. But, making such a change after 15 years with no consultation seems to overstep the mark. |

But, making such a change after 15 years with no consultation seems to overstep the mark. There isn’t any doubt we know we are just custodians as you say. Who knows how other possible Admins would run the place? It was a tester, not a permanent change as I’ve explained. Something so major as that change being introduced would indeed be run by the membership first and there doesn’t feel to be any need to run that poll again currently. I’d say we are pretty much a hands-off team so far, where possible, but have to keep our hands on the steering wheel occasionally. |

So you're basically saying you can use certain demeaning words provided you don't use them too much ? No. This is why we have a team of Admins. I might feel one word is abhorrent but Keith or Overton may feel differently, etc. As you can see from this thread, some posters don’t mind the C word being used but you don’t like ‘Mong’ being chucked about. That’s understandable. I’ve used the word myself once on here and I regret it, you live and learn. All I can say is we have to review the context of how the word was used and act if needed. |

We can only police what we see, and we don't see everything. It's just not possible, even with a thousand Admins. We have and do still encourage reporting of the posts that cross the line, and where possible give our reasoning for and against taking action. |
