I remember watching Ishmael Miller's highlights reel. It made him look like he was up there with the Ronaldos, Peles and Messis!!

It is not a question of Pele today, it is whether today's ballerinas could play back then. Check out the battle of Montevideo For those who watch this video, part two is on the options after the end of part one. Thanks for the vid htfctx. Can you imagine Wilfried Zaha, Cristiano Ronaldo, Dele Alli, Ashley Young or Arjen Robben's reactions to those tackles Edit: There's also a part three, so keep watching after the end and click on the right pic.

How many on here remember this? It was in The Examiner sometime in 2012-13. I can't recall who is the chap on the left, but someone on here may well know.

Slightly surreal this, Pele singing an original tune about the price of fame on a chat show that Maradona hosted. It has English subtitles so easy to follow

Comparisons of players past and present are always difficult but I think Denis Law made a good point in a documentary when asked the old,'would he have been able to cut it today?' question. Law said given the innate ability, determination and resilience of the best of the old greats they would have actually thrived in the modern game. taking on board modern coaching, training and player care developments. Remember they rose to the top at a time when defenders were less than benign and referees condoned play that was more than robust. Pele was kicked from pillar to post in 1966 but was an integral part of that dazzling team of 1970. I actually saw him play in a friendly for Santos against Fulham in, I think, 1973. His cameo appearance was fleeting and my enduring memory of the night was the bemused expressions on the Santos players' faces when they were presented with Fulham Pottery mugs prior to kick off! I'm glad, though, that I can say that I saw this legendary player in action. There are and will be other great and iconic players but PELE was The Original. A sad day.

Remember as a kid watching Pele and that wonderful Brazilian side play in the 1970 World Cup Finals. The picture may have been grainy and David Coleman sounded like a dalek, but you could still see Pele’s unique skills and sportsmanship.
“Legend” is used all over the place nowadays- he truly is one.

R.I.P. Pele. Impossible to compare it may be, but to a lot of us oldies you were the best. Always a gentleman too, on the pitch anyway. You gave us great memories.

I'll try find the link but there's a documentary where they talk about Pele being at his prime before TV around 1958-60 its just noone, outside of Santos, got to see it. For me he's the greatest of all time.

You can argue till the cows come home as to whether he was a better footballer than Maradona, Messi, Ronaldo and the rest, but one thing is for sure, Pele is the only one that truly transcended the sport. An icon, a legend, a global superstar before such a concept ever really existed. Reminds me that when I get round to listing my top 5 films in the Off Topic thread, Escape to victory should be on the list. Not exactly a cinematic masterpiece, but one I never tire of watching. Edson Arantes do Nascimento - RIP

I used to call in to The Gate in Thornhill Lees.Typical old Victorian pub with a small tap room. Dominating one wall was a framed photo of Pele playing for the NYC being tackled by the pub lanlord. Made me smile every time I looked at it. For kids of my era it’s hard to overestimate the status in football that Pele had. R.I.P

Humble is a fitting term to describe him. Hard to find any of the prima donnas strutting around the WC stage who one could describe as such.

Joyful football. Pele leading the way. When Brazil was about the football, not the samba beat and dressing up watching talented players falling over and diving. Pure football being played by players who had no side to them, didnt need it or want it. The 1970 team was the best football team I have ever seen and still is in 2022. We were lucky to see them live. Different times I know, sadly. Pele, a different man from todays big names.

Just watched a programme there on BBC 1 Scotland (probably on BBC 1 Yorkshire as well) called FIFA WORLD CUP 1970 in tribute to Pele !
Some good players in that Brazil team - The late great man himself Pele, Jairzeeno, Gerson, Rivilino, Carlos Alberto and Toasto among others...
The old World Cup 🏆 it was presented as well...
Good programme that at an open fire with a few bottles of Magners and a few Auchentoshan malts !
Played three days before I was born too !
