IMHO should never have let Wells go. Far better player than some would credit him with. But he was never going to score at Greedy League level, so why keep him?

Based on an assumption that he wanted to stay and would have signed a contract if offered, there are plenty of reasons to have thought about keeping him: Because every football team needs a squad and you don’t know that he wouldn’t have scored goals. Because we were shite in season 2 of the Prem and he couldn’t have done any worse. Because he could score goals in the Championship for us when we inevitably got relegated.

To be fair to him he wasn't given a chance, he played 67 minutes of Premier League football. He was an odd signing for Burnley at the time when they always had Wood, Vokes or Barnes up front, all vastly differently players to Wells he was never going to fit in to that Dyche team. Wells was a far better footballer than he was given credit for and I'll always fondly remember him for the penalty which in my opinion turned the way the shoot out went to get us up.

I am not disputing for one second that he did well for us; his goals were instrumental in getting us promoted that season. However, his meagre 67 minutes in the Greedy League back up my point; he clearly was never going to be good enough at that level. Why else would he not get games?

Sometimes not fancied or just don't get chances. Cole Palmer left City to play, not like he was not premier league standard one season then suddenly one of best. Imo wells improved his overall play under Wagner but don't think he was ever a top striker at that level.

Wells averaged a goal every 3.5 games at Championship level. Way better than what we currently have.
Hit double figures 3 of his 4 season. And the season here didn't was because he played half a season after signing him.
22 games 7 goals 35 games 11 goals 44 games 17 goals 43 games 10 goals
Very underrated imo.

I'm not saying he'd have got 15 goals or anything daft but he got signed by probably the worst team in the league he could have gone to. In 10 years Dyche only used 2 other strikers under 6'1" it was never going to be a good move for him because he just didn't fit them. I think he'd have got games for us because he was a different option to Mounie and Depoitre and certainly an option off the bench and I think we got rid too soon, plus he probably deserved a season as well unless he was desperate to go.

Wells cool head in the shoot out will live with me as it was the next one after the heff missed. It easily could have got to him.

The one thing I liked about Wells in both shoot outs was how quickly he got to the area and didn’t waste time with his spot kick. After the Heff missed he knew we had to get back on the horse and knew we didn’t need to dwell on the miss.

To be fair to him, he probably realised that Wagner would be looking to upgrade, so was looking after his own best (financial) interests and would likely have got a better deal at Burnley. I also remember that some of those 67 minutes that he played were in the game against Town at the JSS - and he should really have scored too.

I think we offered him a new deal in the promotion season which he rejected, we then only offered the exact same deal after promotion. If my memory isn’t playing tricks it was described on here as a bit of a revenge move by Hoyle.
