Just seen on the news that the International FA are talking about extending VAR, to corners, free kicks and second yellow cards. For god sake NO!!

Or maybe yes please, since it won't affect us and might even force a nationwide fan revolt which could see it binned altogether???

Crikey, we'd never get a corner again, just like we don't get penalties.

As someone elsewhere has said, VAR is killing the game. After top division matches these days no-one talks about the football - it's always VAR that dominates the conversation.

Tom Cairney (Fulham) has just said on Sky Sports Soccer Special that no-one in the dressing room likes VAR.
Bin it.

That talk of even more VAR was the final straw for me. I've been thinking of binning SKY Sports (NZ) for a while - here they only cover Premiership games with other all other UK soccer on other channels. I don't have enough interest to watch the 90 minute games and these days the 25 minute shortened reviews are often taken up with either replays of goals, replays of fouls and more and more these days long periods of waiting for VAR results - sometimes there seems to be less actual soccer than replays and VAR. I can get enough coverage of the Premiership on MoTD as long as I fast forward past Gary L's commentary. So F'ck'm with their awful VAR.

Or he was being very honest . Again free kicks and 2nd yellows would be subjective so we’d have the same problem of officials having a different view to each other on a situation and so lack of consistency.

Slight contact at high speed can sometimes overbalance you, but some of the "contact" these players feel wouldn't move a feather. Having said that, the way some fouls are ignored you can't blame the players 100% for over-exaggerating, even with VAR "helping" the refs. FFS we even get refs overturning perfectly good ones WITHOUT intervention from VAR That decision in that game still stings

Soon be something else for refs to deal with and “get wrong”
Cue endless debates about what is a “blue card “ and what isn’t.
Particularly when it comes to fouls.

You can bet your life there'll be one within the first 5 minutes of the first game they are introduced. It's all about the referees these days and every one of them will want to be the first to issue one.

I'm glad that I grew up with football in the 60s and 70s when it was a really simple game, played by simple footballers and refereed by even more simple refs! The modern game is complete 🐶💩

And then for the rest of the game players, managers, fans and even pundits will ask why isn't that a blue card then like they do now with yellow cards etc. Again it's all going to be down to the subjective whim of the ref in each match.

There’s also going to be a pink card for questioning another players sexuality, and a green card for an environmentally unsound tackle.

It should be a real enhancement to football - just like VAR should have been. Great if just used for really cynical fouls - where a player makes no intent to play the ball but prevents a really dangerous situation developing and 'takes a yellow for the team' - i.e. gets away with it. I like the idea of using it for dissent too - again should be a real improvement. However, we all know that the FA and the refs will completely fuck it up - just like they have done with VAR.

They were talking about sin bins on Talksport and a couple of things sprung to mind. Allows refs to chicken out of red cards. If it’s 10 mins in the bin what happens when it happens 2 mins from end of a game, are the other 8 mins carried over to next game? They need to get current VAR right particularly handball where nobody any longer has a clue what a penalty is or isn’t.

If blue cards come in this will kill the game even more. Imagine one side on top, loses a man for 10 mins. They put every man behind the ball until the player is eligible to come back on. As others have suggested its a nice way for ref to cop out of a hard decision

Yes its like theyre actively trying to destroy the game, particularly for the fans who actually go to the games.
We should take the lead on VAR. Whilst internationally they expand it, we should ditch it altogether.
And blue cards will just be one more thing they get wrong..another layer of controversy the game doesnt need.

Think the betting companies have missed out unless you can bet 'not in play on var decisions', be honest there is plenty of money making time in lots of the decision making? Can you bet on how many VAR decisions there will be in a game or a half? Bet you could get good odds against a ref going to the screen and telling VAR they are wrong?

With VAR people expected perfection and for every decision to be the same each week and for all the refs to be align in their thinking. Be the same here. You'd soon get people saying well that was a harsh blue card or why wasn't that player given one. Why the on pitch assistant only? So they get 10 seconds to look at something - cue complaints they had to rush a decision and were under pressure to make a snap judgement. The ref doesn't refer to VAR - thought it was generally the other way round.

If they can't do it in that time then it's clear nor obvious. And a ref should never be able to refer to VAR, only the on-field linesmen.
If they're now going to add a blue card so that VAR can take even longer, it's totally counter-productive.

And they should only be able to watch it in real time. Again, having to slow it down to a tenth of normal speed to see one foot brush against the strikers calf means it isnt a clear and obvious thing. For offside, if you cant tell FOR CERTAIN the first time you watch it, in real time, that the ref got it wrong, then act like he didnt. Same with everything else. VAR should be going on without any kind of delays with decisions made within seconds of the incident and relayed straight to the ref through his earpiece. Only clear and obvious errors should be flagged up..other than those just accept the ref will get some fine margin decisions wrong. If they cant use VAR like that, ditch it totally. Its rubbish.

If they were interested in VAR being fair and above board they would copy what rugby have done, but know that won't give them the control they like. Expecting the FA to do the right thing you must still believe in Father Christmas.

Does it work well in rugby? Think the communication to the fans is better but they still have long drawn out delays whilst they watch the footage 50 times. Presumably rugby fans have the same problem that they cant actually celebrate a try properly because they know theres every chance Var will find some minor indiscretion in the build up and disallow it.
Its works well in cricket and tennis but theyre both games that stop and start all the time anyway.

Laws have got so complicated re offsides and handballs that the likes of hawkeye are of little use.
