Lou's relegation in 2000-01 remains the only one where we didn't deserve to go down (maybe 1972-73 as well). He had 8 points from 19 games, if memory serves, and then, with some sadly only short-term help from Peter Ndlovu, managed 20 points from the next 10 games (and but for a last-kick sickener at Bolton it would have been 22). I'd like you to ask him about our failure to sign Ndlovu permanently (was the late Trevor Francis attempting to drive too hard a bargain?) and his thoughts about the players throwing their shirts into the crowd at Wimbledon and, of course, that last day against Trevor Francis's Birmingham. I had the great pleasure of watching Boothy relive that Ian Bennett save whilst standing with him behind that goal. He pointed at where Kenny Irons's perfect cross came from and his thoughts at that moment; 'it's perfect, I'm going to score and keep us up' and he can't believe he didn't. He said about the Wimbledon game; 'we thought we'd done enough'. Recalling Neil Warnock's tale of his sleepless night before finishing the job against Sheffield United (we needed the same result as Lou did, of course), was there any sense of no need to worry the job's done about 2001?

Auracaria - wasn't it Stockport not Bolton? Ref missed a hands ball for a Stockport pen from a corner, palace broke and freedman (?) scored

Not one to condone violence, but the thing that sticks in my mind more than anything that last match was some gobby bugger in the gas club mouthing it off and flashing a betting slip for town to get relegated..Mind you , he still had hold of it as he hit the deck after someone punched him..

Spoke to Lou this afternoon. He says he always thought he was well supported (by the fans) during his time here and says he was happy in the job, despite some (in his words) bizarre goings-on up above (Rubery etc.)

He's aged well. Looks barely any older than when he was here!

Lou Macari is still there. The eponymous fish and chip shop, that is. Pretty decent, by all accounts link. Don't know if he still owns it? Might try it if I go to a gig at Victoria Warehouse - crap venue, but I'm hardly likely to be going to nearby Old Trafford any time soon.

Sacking him and replacing him with Mick the bastard Wadsworth was classic Huddersfield Town.

Me and my Dad went to watch Man Utd in January 2003, which obviously wasn't that long since Macari had been sacked here. "Let's go in Lou Macari's chippy" says my Dad before the game. For some reason, 7 year old me expected to see Lou Macari in there 😂

I've been served a pint by one of the greatest players to ever turn out for Scotland - he owned the place - so you never know!

FFS Some dickhead comments there Edit: One person quoted there is genuinely the thickest and dullest person I know, so maybe it's not that surprising 😁

In 2016-17, that knobhead tipped us to finish bottom of the league.

Will be in the Birmingham programme, tempting fate perhaps but what the hell! Enjoyed the Pav one yesterday, and he turned up in the White Rose with his kids (21, and with Town’s U-23s and 2!) and his wife. Smashing bloke and he spoke well (no one mentioned Cheltenham!)

Happy accident as well! I didn't know he would be at the game so it was a nice surprise when they announced him at half-time. Interview was done back in November, so I actually had prior knowledge that we were signing his son

My take from this article, is mainly that it proves that the internet and social media is such a massive influence. Imagine DATM if you had to send an email or post a letter to the admins and hope they would post it on here? 🤣 Hardly surprising the shit state of some parts of society nowadays.

I seem to remember the original DATM was up and running in those days and there was a big split between those who couldn't believe he'd been sacked after over-achieving and those who weren't happy with the quality of the football and were pleased. Seems the Examiner only received (or printed) letters from the latter group! I thought it was a very foolish move and so it proved to be.

I was thinking about Macari's 2001/2002 season only yesterday actually. The football may not have been Barcelona 2010 standards but it was a pretty enjoyable season. There is a parallel universe somewhere that Leon Knight didn't get sent off on Easter Monday and his goals took us back to the Championship at first attempt. How very different everything else could have been on that basis?
Very odd looking back now that the suspension wasn't immediate and he played the next 3 games before missing the last day of season and the two play off games.

You could compare his reign to Carlos' play off season, dull as ditchwatter but effective and both got in to the play offs.
