I was thinking about Macari's 2001/2002 season only yesterday actually. The football may not have been Barcelona 2010 standards but it was a pretty enjoyable season. There is a parallel universe somewhere that Leon Knight didn't get sent off on Easter Monday and his goals took us back to the Championship at first attempt. How very different everything else could have been on that basis? Very odd looking back now that the suspension wasn't immediate and he played the next 3 games before missing the last day of season and the two play off games. I thought he missed a few at the end of the season. He got booked at Blackpool, which was his 10th, and then said something to the ref after the game that he got charged for. Then he got sent off for that elbow. I'm sure he got a total of 7 games and would've only been back for the play off final.

You could compare his reign to Carlos' play off season, dull as ditchwatter but effective and both got in to the play offs. And the season that followed with coaches of lesser ability, we struggled big time (but obvs we got Mel Machin instead of Warnock as the Red Adair !)

Before the interview, I went and looked the old newspapers up to see the immediate reaction to his sacking. It wasn't what I expected... My take from this article, is mainly that it proves that the internet and social media is such a massive influence. Imagine DATM if you had to send an email or post a letter to the admins and hope they would post it on here? 🤣 Hardly surprising the shit state of some parts of society nowadays. The green recycling sack would be stuffed full every week 👀

Id checked Soccerbase as was surprised myself but after the red v Oldham on the Monday he played the next 3 (including the shocker at Brentford when we lost 3-0) then misses the final day v Notts County and the two play off games. He doesn't seem to miss any other games from Blackpool on (which saw some 'limbs' as the kids would say) but perhaps the eventual suspension is a combination of the booking threshold and the red card?

In those days, suspensions didn't kick in for ages. He'll have got a three match ban for violent conduct, I imagine.

So someone being sent off today wouldn’t be banned until 22nd or even 23rd April. If memory serves, he was sent off just before Easter, then the Easter games took place. It was an early end to the season with the 2002 Workd Cup. I think the last game was 20th April.

It was Easter Monday - so that explains why he got to play 3 games before it kicked in as there was a midweek round too. A Saturday red would have ruled him out of the game two weeks later so its the Monday bit that essentially gave him an extra game before the ban. Which cost us because we could have done with him back for second leg. Though the stats do look like he'd run out of steam for us and the goals dried up. Can't remember of that was the case in reality mind.

Didn't he get into a spot of bother at one time ?

I agree with Lou but (IMO) it was obvious that Knight couldn't be arsed with an extension to his season so he got himself deliberately sent-off/banned so he could go on his jollies.
Can also remember when Andy Payton inexplicably felled an opponent with a right-hook and got himself sent-off. Don't think it was a coincidence that he missed what would have been his first return to play at Oakwell since he signed for us.

Didn't we used to have a player that regularly got himself sent off in time to miss the Xmas games? I'm sure I remember one of Danny Gee's reports mentioning it?

Can almost picture him but can't think of his name. I think he was always either injured or suspended during the festive season.

Lou's interview has been published today, so if anyone is interested, here it is. Far and away the best thing about today was reading that in the programme. Got some good memories from that season and Macari sounds like an absolutely exceptional guy. Great read, thanks.
