Someone explain why this was offside and the crowd and players didn’t go crazy, it seems so clearly NOT offside to me I can’t even understand what mistake the lino makes…
When the first ball is played in, Thomas is outside the area and there are defenders inside it. Bojan is well outside of the six yard box when Thomas shoots and there’s three defenders and a keeper clearly closer to the goal line.
Then Bojan kicks the ball CLEARLY in the direction of our goal, ie, not forward, for Sorba.
And then the lino flags. Have I missed a rule change ?

Not a game changer though luckily.

Thomas has come from an offside position to receive the ball. It's not difficult.

Thomas has come from an offside position to receive the ball. It's not difficult. He did..but by the time the ball was passed to him he was back onside IMO. Their defender the other side of the keeper is playing him on.

You CAN be offside if the ball is passed backwards, if as Sorba did, you come back from an offside position.
It's a myth that you can't be offside if the ball is passed backwards.

Their defender the other side of the keeper is playing him on. I think he is still offside when it's kicked but it's close. Definitely not a shocker like the OP claimed.

Their defender the other side of the keeper is playing him on. Doesn't work like that, Cap'n. He has come from an offside position at the time Bojan had the ball and he then receives it. Offside every single time. We've had numerous decisions where the fans are up in arms when an offside is given - even in our own half! - but it's because a player has come from an offside position to receive the ball. It's the correct decision.

You are correct, it is possible to be offside if the ball is passed backwards because it's your position relative to the ball then it is passed not when it is received that matters.

I would spin and say how is it NOT offside. Sorba ran back onto the pitch and recieves the ball coming from an offside position.

It was incredible how many fans don’t seem to know the offside rule, all I kept hearing was ‘he’s passed it backwards’. You’d think blokes in their 40s would know the rules by now! (Saying that when the blokes in the VAR rooms are clueless as well, where’s the hope?!)

BTW, isn't there also a rule about not leaving the field of play without permission?
Bit like the foul throw-in rule, ignored at every game now.
Us old nit-picking blokes are salivating now!🤣🤣

I can't really get annoyed at it because it didn't affect the result, similar to the Burgzorg tackle that despite being a horror challenge on the end it didn't affect us.

We might have beaten Blackburn but that assault has put Burgzorg out for 2-3 months and has most definitely affected us

It was 100% a red but didn't affect the result negatively just like the offside.

Thing is one frame further on and he'd look onside. Key is capturing the exact moment the ball leaves Bojans boot..cant really tell if that one has it.

Looks clearly onside to me, looking at the intersection between the blue and red line. Please don't laugh at my artistic skill!

I'm not sure you've got your lines in the right place...the red lines should be 'graded' and not parallel as they approach the touchline to allow for the distance.. but to me the 2nd line intersecting the touchline is more than 6 yards from the corner flag

I drew the line on the 6 yard line so I had something to measure against. It's far from perfect, but even with a generous margin for error, Thomas looks onside to me.

I'd like someone to reply to Captain's post (possibly Bassingham Terrier or rockwall). My understanding would be the same as the Captain's but other posts suggest that would be irrelevant (technically ST was in an offside position whilst BR dribbled/touched the ball). Clearly the ball being passed backwards is a red herring (although you can't be offside if you're behind the ball) but I would have thought the Captain's comment was correct. PS Of course assuming he was onside at the moment the ball was passed which isn't clear-cut

Basically interfeering with play and then receiving the ball. I am happy to be corrected.

Doesn't matter at all whether he is now onside.I It's the same phase of play. Which was what I said at the outset. He's offside!
