As per the title, I'm doing some research on a book I'm writing about the hard men who have appeared in the lower leagues for northern clubs, focusing on the years between 95-05.
Interested to hear from genuine fans of each club on who they would nominate. I'd also be very grateful for any memories or anecdotes about the said players. Of course, the forum will be credited for anything featured in the book.
Hope this type of thread is ok, and I look forward to any responses.
I'm sure you lads will move away from the drop zone in due course, cracking win on Saturday. Good luck for the rest of the season.
PS. I'm actually a Preston fan, and Sean Gregan will be our inclusion.

Andy Morrison and Darren Bullock would be the two that spring to mind for that time period.

I guess he wasn't what you'd describe as a conventional 'hardman', but I always thought Wayne Allison was a big tough bastard. Took lots of stick but gave a lot back too, elbows everywhere.

John "wobble wobble" Thorrington Edit: to be serious Scullachi, Cowan, Bullock, Gray, Morrison. Was going to add Lee Fowler, but he always struck me as snide rather than actually hard.

Darren Bullock certainly fits the criteria, he's definitely one i'll be considering.
I'm very much in the ideas stage right now, but going forward i'll be trying my best to get in touch with the featured players for some extra insight. However, the book will largely be a nostalgia piece from the fan's perspective.
Thanks for the contributions so far.
Chris Lucketti is a former PNE & Huddersfield player who deserves a mention. Great defender.

Yep. Sometimes you should never go back.
We brought back David Nugent the other season, and it soured the initial memories of him somewhat.

Jepson didn't leave until 1996.
Wouldn't fuck with him, Morrison or Bullock

Arrested prior to his football career and allegedly involved in the Heysel disaster. htfcokay has some scanned paper prints I think. Horrible bastard on a football pitch.

Bullock, Morrison, Jepson, Allison are the standouts but it makes the list quite 95-2000 heavy.
Worthington and Mirfin would be my choices for 2000-2005 but they pale in comparison really.

Hmmm, I suppose I may have to begrudgingly include a couple of players with Blackpool (Lasher) connections.

Would put Cowan, and a lot of the others mentioned, in the 'wouldn't take any shit and wouldn't back down' category but they weren't hard men.

Jepson used to squeal like a pig when he was fouled and was too fond of diving to be a proper hard man. Bullock for me.

Darren Bullock, still my all time favourite Town player. Loved that last game of the season when he returned home after we had had to sell him, took his SWindon shirt off & wandered around with Town gear on to the chorus of Psycho, Psycho.
To be fair, he was also a much better player than many give him credit for.

Danny Adams despite only making 4 appearance in that time frame.
John McAliskey if you are going on who ''thought'' they were hard. In visage.

To be fair, he was also a much better player than many give him credit for. He was, he bossed midfield in many games with a mixture of hardman tactics and genuine quality, on his day a superb player and might have had at least a crack higher up if he'd been found and mentored earlier, who knows.

I’d agree with Bullock & Morrison. If you read Morrisons autobiography it’s actually quite scarey how unhinged he was, got acquitted in court for GBH same night went out and knocked somebody spark out in a kebab house.
