According to Phil Senior on the and "he Takes That Chance" Podcast Matty Pearson actually growls at opposition players. I know its not in the time frame for this thread but it sums up Pearson perfectly for me, Bully and Pearson are two guys I would want by my side going into a tough pub ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) There is also the claim by an opposition player in the prem promotion year that Heff told him when he came on as a sub that he was going to break his nose if he went for a header !
Brings to mind a story I once read in a Bury fanzine I once bought when we were over at their place. Wish I had kept it so that I could remind myself of the facts but I must have chucked it away at some point.
Whilst Bully was playing for Bury, they had a mascot called Robbie The Bobby. He was a very badly behaved mascot and had been 'sent off' several times for offences including mooning at the away fans, fighting with the Cardiff City mascot and ripping the ears off the Peterborough 'bunny' mascot.
According to the article in the Bury fanzine, on one of these occasions Robbie the Bobby was under the stand getting changed after he'd been 'sent off', when he was set upon by some security staff. As this was taking place, Bully walked past the room where it was happening and immediately jumped to Bobby's aid, helping Bobby to fight off his attackers!
I managed to find an article about Robbie but sadly there's no mention of the incident involving Darren Bullock.

He is a Keighley lad and there’s plenty of shit hole pubs around town, so he’ll have had some scrapes.

Been a couple of votes for Kevin Gray, never really had him down as an hard man although im in no doubt he could handle himself, merely a no nonesense centre half but a great servant for town, bad red mist tackles on opposition players dont neccessarilly make players an 'hardman' which may be why some had him down as one.

As per the title, I'm doing some research on a book I'm writing about the hard men who have appeared in the lower leagues for northern clubs, focusing on the years between 95-05. Interested to hear from genuine fans of each club on who they would nominate. I'd also be very grateful for any memories or anecdotes about the said players. Of course, the forum will be credited for anything featured in the book. An anecdote on Darren Bullock. I was in the tunnels before a Town match at Stoke. (I got to present the match ball to the officials) Waiting in an empty tunnel, first the Stoke dressing room door opens. Their captain comes out first of course and gives the usual "Come on lads" peptalk to his teammates. About a minute later, the Town door opens, Darren Bullock as captain and all he does is growl at the Stoke players. LOUDLY! No froth on his mouth as far as I remember, but it would surprise me if there was.

Johnny Quigley was in the team when I first started watching Town in March 1965. I only saw him play 20 games for Town but I don’t remember him as being a “hard man”? He was only about 5’ 6” for a start. Peter Dinsdale looked a tough nut though!

You're quite right. Johnny Quigley was not your archetypal hard man but he could, and did, mix it. Peter Dinsdale was well hard and uncompromising. The player ( not for Town) but against us who I remember as a nasty piece of work just a few years on played for Brum. Anyone remember Trevor Hockey?

He died of an heart attack after playing 5 a side in Keighley. Only early forties I think.
