Worthington did, if Caretakers count.
My memory tells me Horton did, but I don't trust it.

Before yesterday, only four Town managers had won their first game in charge over the last 40 years.
Ian Ross - 1992 Lee Clark - 2008 Simon Grayson - 2012 Neil Warnock- 2023

He got out, apologised immediately and admitted liability. Then his wife got out, told him to shut up and accused me of backing into him! Went through insurance and ended up knock for knock. Rotten day.

I got that one wrong in my list - forgot that we beat Brum; was thinking of Stoke (a) but that was Narcis.

Ian Ross - 1992 Lee Clark - 2008 Simon Grayson - 2012 Neil Warnock- 2023 It depends on how you count when Steve Smith's reign started. As caretaker he won at Blackburn but he did lose against Sunderland when he officially took over.

One for the statisticians out there. How many Town bosses have won their first game? As I recall the following didn't: Moore Warnock (all three spells) Fotheringham Schofield Corberán Cowley Wagner I did a full analysis of this before Moore's first game, which was buried in at the time. None of the 4 that are listed below by htafcokay won their first match away from home. I believe that AB is the 7th (out of 41, including wartime and counting those who've managed twice, or three times in Tom Johnston's case) who've won their very first match away. The others are Pudan, Langley, Potter, Shankly, Johnston second time around, Smith as caretaker, Buxton second time around (and anyone who wants to argue that he was only the assistant can fuck off - Ross was tied up in a cupboard at the time) and Warnock first time. AB is only the 4th manager to win his very first match which happened to be away from home, the others being Albert Pudan who won our very first game as a league club 1-0 at Bradford in September 1910, Shankly, who won 5-0 at Barnsley in 1956 and Steve Smith at Blackburn in 1987. It's not an everyday event.

I believe that Boot won his first home games both as caretaker and when made permanent, but I really don't see the point of discounting caretakers who were made permanent anyway, so, for me, Buxton started with a draw.

Having missed 74 to around 2000 due to living in Essex having moved away and with kids could only see Town games at such as Southend and Colchester, what amazes me is the fact, that we employed Tom Johnston THREE times. He couldn't get us promoted in the 60s when we had very good teams, and introduced the blue shirts more than once, just because he was a Rangers supporter apparently.

He was released in May 1910, according to 75 Years On, but maybe you have a better source. If not, I believe that my original list is definitive, give or take caretakers becoming permanent. Only you, me and Bassingham are interested in this anyway.

Tom was just half-a-dozen wins away from being on our best managers list. Carlisle away and Coventry at home in '66, win both and we go up, Arsenal at home in the League Cup semi-final second leg, win and we play Saturday's opponents in a cup final at Wembley, Tranmere away in 1976 and a ref who can keep up with the play....And we were struggling quite badly when he arrived in 1963-64, but he signed some excellent players and we soon reached mid-table.

Are you treating last season's rescue job as separate to the start of this season? Or assuming that he'll need to come back and rescue us again in a few years?
