I will be speaking to former Town player Dennis Clarke shortly for the HTSA Heritage Project.
Clarke played for the club between 1969 and 1973 and was an ever-present member of the Second Division title winning squad of 1969-70 and also played most of the games in the two seasons in the First Division and eventually left when we were in the Third Division in 1973-74.
Does anyone have any memories of him, or anything they want to ask him?

On a serious note, I'd love the players' perspective on the lack of investment (some would say selling of the crown jewels) once we got promoted in '70.

Who were the three ‘best’ (most talented or, if he prefers, most important) players in Town’s 69-70 promotion winning squad?

I always liked Dennis Clarke. Good, consistent defender.
Question for him - what was his memory of playing in the League Cup Final for WBA not long before he joined Town, and did he have any influence on Dick Krzywicki coming to Town from WBA?

Has he ever been at or involved in a Sports quiz where the question "Who was the first subsitute to be used in an F A Cup final?" was asked?

All the questions I would ask are above, but he is one of 11 names I can still recite which represented the team who won promotion in 69/70. A fabulous time brought to a screeching halt by a board, yet again, showing no ambition.
(Poole, Clarke, Hutt, Nicholson, Elam, Cherry, Smith (RIP), McGill, Worthington, Lawson, Hoy - with Kryswicki later).

To the tune of Ging Gang Goolie we sang on the bus on the way back from a 3-2 defeat at Derby: We've got Willy Willy Willy Clarkey at full-back, at full back And if you score some goals he'll pull one back, pull one back Willy, Willy Clarkey, Willy Clarkey at full-back Willy, Willy Clarkey, Willy Clarkey at full-back.
Not quite the Scotty Malone song. No idea where 'Willy' (or indeed 'Willie') came from, but he pulled one back at the Baseball Ground, his only league goal in the top division. Perhaps only up to 50 others ever heard that song, although the tune was used for others - 'on the wing' (Dick Kryzwicki?) instead of 'at full-back'.
I met Dennis just once - in the Town dressing-room before the West Riding Cup match at home to Bradford City on a Friday night, just after we'd beaten Watford. I got in for free to sell souvenir programmes of the 1969-70 season and Dennis kindly talked me and my mate through the thing. He mistook himself for Roy Ellam in one photo! Frank was holding court and teasing all the programme sellers. Steve Smith just sat quietly reading the programme. Funny how I remember that. The day after, Geoff Hutt and Frank made an appearance at Barkers Sports in town and Frank remembered me from the day before ('it's old freckle face'). Geoff played with the cash register. I met Frank Worthington twice in two days and then never again.
You might ask Dennis about the '£1,000 bonus to say up' saga. I've always believed that the club made it public primarily so that they could sell our best players and claim that it was good riddance.
He scored the only goal at Burnley (was it a header?) at the beginning of the cup run in 1972, but missed the quarter-final match at Birmingham (52 years ago today). Please ask him why we were unable to come close to another performance that season like the Cup win against West Ham. Nowadays we'd be talking about it galvanising the team, but then they just seemed to go back to sleep.
And how close did we come to signing a striker to play up front with Frank?

I had photos of the XI on my bedroom wall and saluted them every night before bed. From almost the start of the season to the defeat at Blackpool in December, the wide players were Hoy and Dobson (whose photos I had in colour). Smithy started only twice until he beat Sheffield United in Boxing Day and then he took Hoy's place in the team. Dobson played more times that season than both Hoy and Smith. He didn't play in any of the last 8 games, when Hoy and Kryzwicki played instead. Surely he was injured because he wasn't even included as the sub, which was usually Chapman.

In reply to the last point above by araucaria, didn’t we agree a fee for Hugh Curran from Wolves but it fell through because he got injured or something?

My God, how did I miss Colin Dobson?! Hangs head in shame! To be fair to you, Dobson (31), Hoy (28) and Smith (19) filled 78 of the 84 wide positions that season and all three deserve to be included - in a team of twelve, perhaps. Was Dobson injured for the last 8 games? I don't remember, but we signed Krzywicki for the run in. Just thought, how could I have left out Steve Smith? I should have bought a photo of him for my wall after Boxing Day.

Does he remember his goal at Burnley in the fa cup in 1972? I still remember it as I was behind the goal in line with the ball and knew it was in. Result 0-1

Who were the three ‘best’ (most talented or, if he prefers, most important) players in Town’s 69-70 promotion winning squad? Jimmy nick, Frank and an other Would have to be Trevor Cherry. He was a great player for Town as a half back then, and nothing like the type of player Revie turned him into. ( OK. Dirty!) To be honest though, a number of players almost make the cut. Lawson scored some good goals, Jimmy McGill was the Hogg of his day, different position, but his battling was a good contribution. Old enough to remember them all as I started in 1965.

The wheels fell off after he left for Hull. Anyway, it would be interesting to see what Dennis Clarke’s opinion is.

Who were his most difficult opponents in the 1st Division? Says that while we did struggle in the second season, we were never really battered by anyone. We just needed another forward, but he didn't mention that the only team he remembers being battered by were Liverpool in that first season. Also mentioned about Leeds and how you could never get the ball off them.

Says he was at Leeds Road one day and Greavsie said, "there's someone in there you might want to speak to", so he goes in the office and Dick Krzywicki is sat there. Dennis had no idea he was signing. Dick told him that he'd only signed because Dennis was already at Town!

Also mentioned the Drabble's Rabble stuff, and spoke about how Stanley Kinder accused him of being one of the four, and that basically the chairman hung them out to dry.
