Just reading the article in the last bastion of local journalism, the Examiner.
Demolished this summer apparently, along with the gas tower.
I know a few on here were hoping for a reopening as a venue.

Such a shame as the building along with its car park has so much potential to be a success. Perfect location too.
Was great on a matchday.
Wonder if Kev ever looked at taking it on.

I quite like the gas holder. Some in London have been incorporated into redevelopments and it’s a shame the same can’t happen here.
It appears that no one is going to spend any money on the site though, it will be a depressing walk down gasworks street to the ground.

What a shame. Loved a pint in there before wandering over to the stadium. How long has it been closed now? I've been in Berlin for 6 years, but I remember it was open the first couple of times I was home to visit.

We might see ‘em in the floodlights at the JSS then… I’m not sure what they’ll do with the land. They generally don’t knock buildings down unless there’s some sort of cost benefit in the future. Why waste money on demolition if the building/structure isn’t actually a health hazard. It’s like those bastards at the water companies, they just wanted to see off land for housing, which they have done to great effect over the last few years. But I’m really not sure what would go on this site? Retail? It’s dying on its arse in bricks & mortar. Leisure? Car park? Cable car station? As for the land, I’m no expert, but would the land there be classed as contaminated at all? I’m sure any development opportunity would be aware of that anyway, just curious if a gas holder pollutes the ground underneath as much as a chemical plant?

'The application from Northern Gas Networks says that there are “no plans to restore or remediate” it once work is completed but that the void below the gas holder will be filled to ground level.' but I would have thought there would be need for some remediation works. My understanding is the owner of the land that is contaminated or the original polluter will usually be expected to pay for any site remediation (clean-up) costs.

Its a wonder the club lasted as long as it did really in all honesty though.
Its an odd location, not close enough Town nor particularly close to residential homes and a venue will never survive solely on the basis of a football club when its going to be busy for 3 hours at a time, 25 or so times a year.
Same goes with ropewalk so if anyone's building their hopes up there I think they'll be disappointed - they had associated custom from the cinema as well and still couldn't make a go of it.

There had been times I'd been into ropewalk on non match days and it seemed fairly busy. Match days was always rammed, so I'm surprised it went tbf

All the old Gas holders are slowly being demolished but it is a massive job due to the amount of industrial waste they create including arsenic. When you think back about how industrial it all was down Leeds Road and over the years old mills have been demolished along with the massive chimney and cooling towers of the old Huddersfield power station, it was one of the first things you noticed about Huddersfield when coming in on the train.
Its a crying shame about the old Gas Club, i use to drink in there when it was used by all the lads who worked on the roads in the 80's. These days they call it progress, i call it a crying shame that we are losing so many of the old drinking establishments.

If you check maps from around 1900 the site was actually an 'Electricity Works' and the Gas Works was actually on the opposite side of Gas Works Street. I suspect the gas holder was built at a later date so I would imagine contamination was low on that site.

When I was the treasurer of the Huddersfield Referees Association, one of my duties was to organise the Presidents Night. This involved the hiring of a comedian/MC and 2 or 3, ahem, exotic dancers/strippers/dirty lasses. This was always held at the Gas Club and was one of the RA's main fund raisers. I know a lot of local footballers attended and I would imagine one or two of our esteemed DATM membership lent their support to the local refs. It was an ideal venue for that type of event, being a rather seedy type of place. It nevertheless gave pleasure to a lot of young and not so young men

There's been some right shit pollution down Leeds Road in the past. My grandad on dad's side, died at age 57, riddled with cancer. As dad and my aunt said, no bloody surprise. He worked at I.C.I. dye works, came home every bloody colour under the sun just about every day. Not much health and safety around back in 1959 when he died. ( He'd been ill on and off a good while by then.) Much as we moan about it, health and safety is needed in many industries. Hope the gasworks gets cleaned up. It pretty much amazes me, they got all those conifers to grow on Dalton bank. So different to the 60s, when you could watch the game from up there, because bugger all would grow there.

Gas club has been closed 4 years,Ropewalk a bit less maybe? Area is not a place most people visit apart from match days.Could a major redevelopment of the area be a success? Edit- Ropewalk longer than i thought then
