O’Brian was one of the best midfielders in the league that year. In fairness I wouldn’t class LOB as “creative” he wasn’t a playmaker. But I haven’t seen much better at Champ level than him when it comes to his engine and agility, the way he’d press and win the ball in dangerous areas, never giving teams room to breathe was so effective. The original point from my boss was that good strikers and a solid defence are most important in this league - implying midfield can be workmanlike or at least isn't as important. The point being, midfield is more important in the top 2 divisions. O'Brien wasn't a playmaker in the typical sense, but he was the utter heartbeat of the team - for the reasons you say but also the way he could dribble past players in the middle of the park, get us up the field and win free kicks in dangerous areas. He set up our attacks and helped give us our edge going forward in the way that a playmaker would, he just did it in a different way.

Just signed a contract extension with Burnley until 2025, so if we were looking at him, then that's over.

I hope that post is in jestrofl3 Why would Burnley extend him by a year, just to send him on a season loan? In order to get a loan fee? Theoretically possible, but I think we can say it's now vanishingly unlikely. Shame as I think he would have been a cracking signing for us.
