Smoking, boozing and snorting Charlie is probably done in bigger numbers but hey, let's pick on betting. I don't disagree bookmakers are absolute shysters and shithouses but this drum is banged far too often and loudly, demonising betting. Horse racing must be breathing a huge collective sigh of relief as football takes the limelight off it as public enemy number 1 with regards to betting.

When I was 19 I put a bet on a horse {Lions Mantle was his name} at 10/1. The horse won. That was my 1st,and last bet.Gambling has never interested me, I just liked the horses name!

Remember finishing work one Sunday afternoon and being a bit bored watching a Premier league game so decided to bet on the amount of corners in the second half, had something like £8 in the online account so thought I'd use that to pass the time. One thing led to another, found myself on the casino part of the website and I was about £400 down by the time the game finished. I'd started chasing losses and kept on LOSING! Got totally out of hand and other than say the grand national or fa cup final I won't bet. Even then it's never more than £10.
But why stop at banning cigarette, alcohol and now betting adverts?
Britain's got an obesity crisis. Should we stop advertising energy drinks, pop companies, crisps, biscuits, sweets on football shirts and advertising boards too?
Obesity linked deaths in the UK will be higher than gambling addictions.

Gambling on football adds to it for me, i even make a small profit.
What is wrong with gambling is they target “losers” anyone who wins eventually is turned away. I’m banned from all promotional offers for example.
But they bombard those that lose money with marketing and offers. They know who lose on the slot games. The whole model works on taking lots of money off small numbers of people.

There are lots of things that people enjoy that are a health or life risk , people want to control everything. I get that some folk have addictive personalities but most folk don’t and enjoy a bet once a while.

Was at work a few days ago in a room of 4 colleagues all of us chatting about the euros , another colleague came in and was quite vocal and annoyed that the conversation wasn’t to his liking. In him leaving everyone in the room was laughing and saying how that wouldn’t happen if the subject was about a run of the mill subject say mortgages or holidays etc. Why folk think they have the power to tell people what to like and do is beyond me.

Spend about £4 on the Grand National each year and that's my lot unless I win a free £5 bet builder in my FPL league.
It's a big problem for any involved but the amount in gambling problems is a minority to those with gambling, drinking or obesity problems

Betting is like any other activity really- fine for most people but there's a minority for whom it gets under their skin and they lose control. Same with drinking. I used to do an accumulator every weekend, with a stake of around 10p. Without even thinking about it I've basically stopped doing so most weeks- in part because my dad is no longer around and we used to compare our bets. Both of us bet in similar ways, tiny stakes and 8-10 games, so very little chance of winning but a big payout if it did come off.
What i can't understand though, is betting in casinos and especially the fruit machines. I've worked with people who'd get their pay packet on Friday and drop most of it in the fruit machine the same night. Madness.

Exactly I get a buzz from watching loud heavy bands, watching and reading horror, watching Town n skateboarding! One or more of those things wouldn’t get a look in to other people and one or two may even horrify people, especially skating at 50 😂

I've bet in the past not to any crazy extent by any means but can understand the buzz. Similarly I can understand the buzz of coke as an example. I can understand both but don't do either. As sad as it might sound to many, I get a buzz these days when my 5 year old decides she wants to actually say what she's done that day and what she's learnt. People that don't have kids probably wouldn't understand that.

I suspect that many commenting on here have lived a bit of life, most commenting are probably beyond their mid thirties.
The problem with the gambling industry is how they glamorise it for young lads, it’s all a bit of a craic, when in reality it’s a poisonous rabbit hole if you get sucked in.
Anyone who hasn’t experienced an addictive personality, either personally or a family member or friend probably won’t understand how this particular vice is ridiculously unregulated compared to things that have eventually been cracked down on.
The following points should explain a bit more.
The gambling companies have huge lobbying power. They have adverts specifically targeting the addictive nature of it, presumably the trade-off that the lobbyists agree with Govt.
How many of those other vices can see you literally lose hundreds or thousands of pounds in the blink of an eye? How many fags can you smoke in 90 mins? How much booze/spirit can you throw down your neck to incur the same financial loss as gambling?
You get pissed, you get a hangover and go again, chain smoking can land you in deep shit, but initially I expect it makes you feel like shit after 40-60 fags? (never smoked, so don’t know)
But gambling is ubiquitous nowadays, these kids don’t need to visit a bookies like we used to, it’s right there, 24/7.
It’s a huge ticking time bomb for younger generations, forget about how us crusties view this and brush it off as nothing much to be concerned about.
I’m sure many will say the above is a pile of shite, but all I’ll say is I hope I’m wrong about the generational impact this will have.

The betting industry is as corrupt as fuck, ban gamblers that show the slightest bit of common sense betting. You can open an account and be shut down in one bet if it wins and you’ve taken good odds, this alone shows how they operate , they crave foolish punters and shut down those who are not and your right it is a ticking time bomb for the young and maybe it’s that I’m older and just hate the way society try’s to kill anything fun.

I can understand why Ray Winstone would be the face of a betting company, but it really pisses me off when loads of ex footballers earn money from promoting these shysters.
I think it’s Paul Merson who really has a go at these people, because they’ll know the problems it’s caused to their team mates over the years.

Many years ago I lost a very dear friend to gambling and alcohol abuse. He was a bright enthusiastic individual who sadly went into a downward spiral which resulted in him losing his family, business and ultimately his life. I still remember the last time I saw him aged just 40 walking across a road to the bookies, yellow from liver failure and looking a shadow of his former self. Whilst I agree we should all make choices as to what we do I don’t like how gambling and alcohol are glamorised or how companies such as Paddy Power try to make gambling a light hearted pleasure.

I gamble quite a lot and I am an addict, though I have it under control these days. I won a lot of money but lost even more so I know both sides.
To me, football doesn't offer a lot of value to the punter. Don't get me wrong, it's good for accas and you can always take outside punts. I had a treble come up last season which was around 120/1. But I don't see much value in corners and cards and all the rest of it. Just my opinion.
Betting lots of money on goals or whatever is the path to destruction. Look for value and longer odds and keep your bet small.
If you need help, get it. Lots of support out there now.
I like a bet on the horses and I've had a good week at Ascot. Small stakes and long odds, worked ok this week.
C'est la vie, be lucky. Don't let it take over your life.

It is a light hearted pleasure for most but as Grandmaster Flash once sang...'and if you get hooked, baby, it's nobody's fault, so don't do it'. To continue along that tangent. Every time in commentary they say, "Kane", I can't help but retort "Sugar".

Nowt wrong with a little flutter so long as you have it under control and don't chase losses, I have done and the easy accessibility nowadays does mean it's an issue for many.
Personally - it pays for my season ticket each year with a bit left over - at my age if I can't make a bit out of the football then i've learnt nothing.
