While I’d obviously rather be in The Championship and not in it, we are where we are and as HTAFC are competing I’ll be very interested indeed of course...
I’d like to see Town win it - A new trophy 🏆 if not exactly the most prestigious one in our fine history -
A potential first trip to Wembley for me all things being well...
There’s a couple of Yorkshire Derby’s in there as well, we’ve not played Donny for a bit and Barnsley is always a decent clash as well...
Some reasonable prize money there to be earned...
Participation = £20k Groups £10k / win... £5k / draw Last Thirty Two = £20k Last Sixteen = £40k Qr / Finals = £50k Winners = £100k
So a nice wee double then HTAFC - This Knockout Cup and League 1 Championees... Make it a Double !!! 🥃 🥃

PL U21s are basically there because the PL forced the EFL to accept it or they wouldn't give them a big wad of cash. Bribery in other words. "Let our U21 teams in or we won't pay you" is the general gist of it. I won't be going to any games, even if we got to the final. No interest. Oh and for reference, we can't just sack it off and rest the entire first team and chuck in the B team and kids. Think the rule (to basically force you to take it somewhat seriously) is something like 5-7 players that played in the previous league game have to play in these games. Can't remember the exact number, but you can't just rest the entire first team According to Wikipedia (I couldn't find it on the EFL website): Minimum of four qualifying outfield players in their starting XI. A qualifying outfield player was one who met any of the following requirements:
Any player who started the previous or following first-team fixture. Any player who is in the top 10 players at the club who has made the most starting appearances in league and domestic cup competitions this season.
Any player with forty or more first-team starting appearances in their career, including International matches.
Any player on loan from a Premier League club or any EFL Category One Academy club.I would suggest we don't pick more than 4 qualifying players...

I genuinely think clubs should have an opt out from this worthless and meaningless trophy.

Likely to get shot down for this, but unfortunately we find ourselves in League One and this competition is part of being a club at this level. Prior to 2012, had we jumped on a relegated Championship club’s forum and seen their fans thinking they were too big and entitled to take part in this competition, it would have boiled a lot of bodily fluid in our fan base. We are a League one club for now and need to own that, do the best we can to get out of the league, and if Town are playing in any competition I’ll want us to win. I went to the final in 1994 when I was 11 years old and was gutted we lost at Wembley. I’d happily avenge that memory this year (especially if we got the double of winning the league too)! UTT Haven't seen any posts on this thread suggesting we are too big to play in this competition and there goes that word entitled again. Entitled to what exactly? Just valid comments about how ridiculous it is to be playing PL sides U21's and how we could pick up injuries to key players when we're forced to play them in a meaningless competition unless you get to the final. Even then it's an extra game on a weekend that potential promotion rivals could gain an advantage by picking up 3 points whilst you're parading around a half empty Wembley stadium. I doubt fans of any teams in the competition are excited to be playing the U21's of Fulham, Crystal Palace, Brighton etc.

Didn’t Bradford reluctantly pick a team with four qualifying players then sub three of them after a minute? A few years ago so my memory may be playing tricks on me.

Seems completely wrong.

A good competition to the blood quite a few of the young uns in imo, including the early rounds of the proper cups. Not sure what the problem is. It should allow the 1st team to concentrate on the league & hopefully bring through a few fringe players nearer to the 1st team squad.

Peterborough won it last season in a 60 plus game campaign & missed out on promotion......Nice to do the double, but not at the expense of going up.

Went with friend to see Orient play in it last season. Get a seat near running track as they had a scooter come round at half-time full of pizza, about the only thing I remember about the evening tbh

Conference and the PL are planning something similar for this year.
The current plans for the new tournament would have the competition take place between the U-21 sides of the Premier League against the National League sides, as per The Athletic. According to the report, the top 16 teams from the top flight and the top 16 clubs in the fifth tier from the last season would take part in the competition. If it goes ahead, there would be four groups of eight teams on a regional basis and the National League sides would not face off against each other in the group stages.
The matches between the National League sides and the U21 teams would take place at the former's home stadium and all the gate receipts from the game would go to the non-league clubs to improve their financial status over the course of the season. As per the report, half of the prize money would also go to the non-league side, while the other would go to a pot and be distributed between the 56 non-participating clubs in the National League and sixth-tier National League North and National League South.

It doesn't look as though Duff even picked that many at Barnsley (for the group phase, at least). The penalty for failing to field 4 qualifying players: "a fine of up to £5,000".

Could we update the thread’s title to the Bristol Street Motors Trophy unless there is some deep nostalgia for Papa Johns Trophy that I’ve missed?

No Doubt the Posh will be looking forward to playing us again, one of their fan i bumped in to on holiday said we were the worst set of fans he had ever come across. He did get caught up in that trouble after the play offs at Leeds road and he had his car damaged along with his mate getting hit with a bottle. The Town fans were bad that night hard to believe its over 30 years a go.

I think we cared about it in ‘94 and got a lot of us our first trip to Wembley. Since then Wembley’s become a bit of a thing for Town.

What an absolute set of entitled moaning muppets on this thread. Deriding this competition as if it is beneath us. Quick to mock fans of other clubs who have delusions of grandeur. How is this different? Without this competition, Warnock wouldn't have lasted his first season and unlikely we would have gone up year after. Two of my favourite ever Town moments came in this comp. Stockport and Carlisle away in 94. Let's get it won.
