Miller and Ruffells ain’t working.
They were caught against Harrogate, Limassol and Hertha and they look shaky today. The transition from having to not having the ball is catching us out.

Friendly or not, ward is like having 10 men. We have to get Atleast one preferably two strikers in this week I think that’s unfair on Ward to be honest. We haven’t created anything clear for our strikers throughout the last three games (that’s partly down to patterns but it’s also down to the quality of oppo). We’ve carried everyone who’s played in that position, and I don’t necessarily think it’s down to the personnel - I struggle to see how anyone else would have affected the game in the same circumstances. We work it wide and if we do pick it up centrally it’s either the CF dropping deep or it’s an advanced midfielder like Kane or Evans.

Big concern that Maxwell is playing, Ward & Wiles virtually anonymous, Hoggy some really decent battling & a couple of depressing passes, soft goal conceded & virtually no threat on their goal. Evans & Healey trying hard.
You have to consider the opposition we are playing, we are getting into some decent defensive blocks but offering nothing going forward apart from a couple of decent presses.
My fear is that this is the team he wants to start the season with, assuming Nicholls & Spencer are going. I'd like to see Kane on for Wiles at half time, though I doubt it will happen.
Strikers, one pacey, one physically strong needed as the ball just does not stick with Ward & there hasn't been many punts up to him, just as many passes to feet, only one which he dealt with well.

We need that focal point CF it just cones back Or the strikers need to make runs for the likes of wiles, kane ,evens etc to find them. Lecce not a bad side and it's a good work out Would just like to see a bit more pattern for the attacking players

Lecce don't press but work the ball from the back to the front men, Maxwell was not great for the goal but has made a couple of decent saves......If LN is looking for a move its him or Chapman at present.

Town haven’t been that bad but definitely weaknesses. Struggling to get out our half. And when we do push forward, we have no options. They seem tired, probably due to the training from yesterday.
Poor defending though, Sorensen and Lees should have stopped it and Maxwell getting beat at the near post to finish it off.
Definitely not terrible but Lecce have been excellent. Credit to em

Duff has been very clear that this is an exercise in defending. I wouldn’t expect either Ward or Wiles to be central to that. It’s about shape and getting the press right. They’re a Serie A team so they’re going to dominate possession and, in all honesty get out of our press easily, we’re not going to create a lot.

Respect your opinion, and maybe is a bit harsh but regardless don’t think he offers anything in normal games either anymore. Shadow of the player under corberan who was a proper handful

Shadow of the player under corberan who was a proper handful Shadow of a team from that under Corberan - we had more quality all-round and I’m sure we played more to his strengths if that’s what we can credit his performances with. And our patterns completely different. Edit: 2 mins into the second half, we have the ball deep, we’re comfortable and Wardy tries to make a decent run behind a very high line but has to shape it to keep onside. Only for the pass to be absolutely crap. There’s fuck all he can do with that - he can run around for 90 min and burn himself out, but if the ball is bad…. Edit / Edit: 6 mins in, Ward drops very deep, wins the ball back, starts a decent counter and is later involved again, setting Wiles away who wins a FK on the edge. …he also should have scored. But a decent save. (I’m not just sniping you by btw, it’s just for the general discussion so that I don’t have to write multiple posts cos I’m lazy).

Surely Maxwell should be off for that, handball outside the area?

For anybody wondering about the relative strength of this Lecce side: A couple of potential starters on the bench, a very recent signing not involved, but otherwise about as strong a starting XI as was available to them.

I am watching it and it is a training exercise. Agree it isn’t a pretty watch but anyone expecting that will be sadly disappointed.
I’m watching it for my interest in the team, shape, new guys etc. It really is an exercise in playing without the ball today. Clean slate for all players - the bashing of Ward today is unnecessary - him and Healey done the same today as we don’t have the ball, not a game so far to judge the strikers so the Ward bashing today is pre-meditated.
The goal conceded was poor but from a defender pov that happens sometimes when in close quarters to ball. I agree that Maxwell should save it at near post - if Nicholls leaves I would like to see another keeper to strengthen that area.
Lecce are a Serie A team and we are League one so not a game to get excited about if we look a lesser team than them.

If Nicholls leaves and we don't sign a new number one, it's bordering on criminal negligence from Nagle and co.
I'd be absolutely gutted to see Spencer leave - agree he's not the finished article but he's our future

We haven't done too badly today. Ball retention was very poor at times in the first 45, but as others have said, they are a very good side.
Omg we've got another pen 😲
