The main transfer rumour of the summer we missed out on Silva, got the wrong Adama, etc, was over an absolute nobody called Anthony Limbombe, who could've been even worse than the wingers we did sign

Who was that young Brazilian a few years back that we were apparently signing? Lincoln, currently not getting a game at Altach in Austria.

We did actually sign the wrong Mcstay brother, in 1987. It was probably deliberate because his brother Paul was a fantastic player for Celtic and Scotland, but Willie was well named and only played 9 games for Town

Remember we were strongly linked with David Wetherall for weeks and weeks before the first Steve Bruce season. Sure that Iwan Roberts was on the verge of returning at some point (when he left Norwich?) but it never materialised. Could be dreaming, though.

Linked with Matt O'Riley the window he joined Celtic Linked with Zian Flemming in Jan 2022 Eric Maxinm Choupo-Moting in 2018 Almost signed a fella called Ted Drake in 1934 but he went to Arsenal instead who pipped us to the league when our best forwards got injured and Billy Smith retired

Didn't we refuse to sign Rickie Lambert for £1m or something? Went onto score 100+ for Southampton and Liverpool bought him.

If we extend the concept to Managers, Phil Parkinsons Press Conference with the empty seat has got to be one of the weirdest experiences ever.

Apparently we (maybe Lee Clark?) went to watch Vardy and didn’t go for him because of his attitude. Or is that HTFC folklore?

Simon Terodde. Apparently had him in the building, I'm sure he would have been the jewel in the crown under Wagner!!! Goal scoring record was superb aswell.

I remember being really excited about the prospect of signing him. He went onto be even more prolific too, which was more frustrating!

Apparently we (maybe Lee Clark?) went to watch Vardy and didn’t go for him because of his attitude. Or is that HTFC folklore? Confirmed in Vardy's book. There was also an earlier opportunity to sign Vardy in 2007 when Simon Collins managed him at Stocksbridge and he recommended Vardy to Town. Stocksbridge wanted 3 grand but Town said they'd already signed a striker and couldn't take another one.

Did we sign the "wrong" Greaves once? Dunno, but we signed the wrong Hurst from Emley. They had a young kid called Glynn Hurst who was tearing it up at that level and eventually went on to play in Scotland before making a career in the lower leagues here. Before he went to Scotland, we signed his older brother Chris, who could barely even get in the side at Emley.

There was a brilliant centre half called Pareido who we nearly signed but Jacko didn't like his attitude.
Pareido later changed his name to Emerson Thome.

After selling Marcus Stewart we were reportedly going to use the money (£2.5M - a ridiculous bargain even in those days - yes, I'm still bitter!) to strengthen the squad.
We were rumoured to be signing Daniel Fonseca, Tijani Babangida and Tomek Iwan.
We signed Martin Smith (who wasn't bad when fit TBF), a one eyed midfielder called Chris Holland who divided opinion, and Chris Hay, who was universally agreed to be fucking dreadful.

I was fortunate enough to do my Work Experience (if you can call it “work”) with Town’s Football In The Community. Was talking to Thome and his agent whilst getting something to eat! Jacko spat his dummy out when heard he’d gone on trial at Stoke when was supposed to be still with us. Ended up signing for Wednesday not long after and being sold to Chelsea for around £3m then to Sunderland for £4.5m - just our luck!

We had Ian Goodison and another Jamaican trialist around the same time.

Away from players.
Ange Postecoglu.
Hodgkinson didn't want to wait until the season in China finished where Ange was managing. Ange would have come.
So went for dumb and dumber instead.

We could have had Stan Ternent 20 years before we got him, after Steve Smith resigned, Town approached him to take over as manager but he turned us down. We appointed Malcolm Macdonald instead. In 2007, before Phil Parkinson was offered the job, we offered it to Ronnie Jepson. Jepson was keen but then Paul Scally, the Gillingham chairman, threatened to sue Town so it all fell through. I never knew this until Jepson told me a few months ago when I harangued him at the Warnock do in York. In 2008, when Ternent was sacked, we interviewed Ian Holloway for the job, but he reckons he didn't want to live in Huddersfield, according to his autobiography.

I never heard this one. That would have been some signing. I can see that one from both sides, I think that season he was about to win the J League, so he would have wanted to complete that, along with honouring his contract to the Japanese. The following season he was off to Celtic. The only doubt I have about this rumour is that I’ve only ever heard that Sunderland enquired on him and wanted a manager who had made a name for themselves.

Got to be the biggest ever what if Ian St John & Ron Yates to line up with Ray Wilson, Denis Law, Mick O'Grady, Les Massie, Ray Wood & Managed by Bill Shankly Yep, Towns just about ever example of lack of ambition, as they basically cost peanuts at the time. Yes he did say we'd have won five titles too, as far as I remember from reading his autobiography years ago. Of course saying it and doing it, are different things, money would have had to have been kept being spent, both on players and ground improvements. Even so, considering how rich a Town it once was with mill owners, it still ranks as one of the most stupid decisions to me. Just before my time, as I started in 64-65.

I remember being linked to the “national treasure” Chris Kamara when he was an effective aka “dirty” midfielder at Swindon.
