Couldn’t see anything on the board so created this one - don’t worry….no poll… I know we talk about them on match days but thought it warranted a thread. I’ve had a bit of banter back and forth disagreeing with some folk on the previous ones if they were or weren’t ‘defensive’ but the theme recently has definitely been downbeat. Duff talks about a ‘quiet’ dressing room and the need for players to ‘step up’; also that he can’t understand the dip in form etc. Based on the recent presser, and body language, the players seem a bit dull, a bit down, a bit ‘meh’…no wonder it’s a quiet dressing room. As a ‘workplace’ I wonder if it’s a bit boring? Duff strikes me as steady and methodical. It’s like when the boring teacher is taking the class rather than the mental one. I’m not getting the ‘up for it’ vibes in the pressers recently BUT also, the lines of questions are pretty dull and drab - what happened to proper interrogation and getting a reaction!?…..

Used to enjoy listening to Wagners and Warnocks as they had personality, Corberan who although maybe didn't have personality you always learnt something from. Funnily enough the others who have done poorly all did drab press conferences too. Maybe aside from MF who was just a comedy sketch.

There's a couple of players who I think always give good interviews/press conferences. I like both Brodie Spencer and Josh Koroma. Think both come across well.
Always surprises me that we never hear much from out captain. Surely when we are in a loosing spell and in bad form, it would be good for the captain to be the one to do the press conferences and post match interviews. Show some leadership etc

I honestly think part of the issue is also the questions asked - think there needs to be a bit more spark both sides. Can DATM get a representative at these pressers

I thought the last couple, certainly the latest one, came across really poorly. Negative rhetoric accompanied by appalling body language.
The club doesn't feel like it is moving forward. The atmosphere is dead, like the proverbial black cloud hangs over everything.
I only experience the atmosphere in the ground and gauge what is happening on the pitch but no one can say the last 3 games has shown a confident, content and positive team.
It therefore begs the question if the overall mood at the club needs lifting? What is the working environment like in general? Has anyone stopped to think if anything can be changed? Obviously I don't know, as I don't experience it, but I think everyone would agree things could be better.
Results largely dictate things but is there a general malaise/atmosphere that is preventing the club from moving forward.
The press conferences/interviews give a degree of insight and the last few have hardly lifted the mood or created optimism/hope.

Apart from injury updates, pressers serve no purpose, but the media want them, to fill airspace and column inches. They either don't know how, or are afraid to ask questions which would like answering.
The media, both local and national, have this agenda to fill in space with whatever gubbins they can find. For example, yesterday's BBC Sport home page had four separate items about Man U. I can guarantee that none of the issues raised and discussed will be mention at Ten Hag's next presser.
Bringing it back to local, the interviewers, not just Oggy, ask benign questions, leaving it to listeners, the summariser and the producer to moan about everything and anything,
It's the way that things are these days. More's the pity.

Watch Anthony Evans on his presser yesterday. What was the point, he looked disinterested defensive arms folded, head tilted to one side, said absolutely nothing of value, same old, I'm not sure that after a sip of water he yawned. Not slating him think he is a decent footballer but how boring the presser was. Anyway onwards and upwards. UTT.

Doesn't surprise that they come across in the way you highlight to be honest. They're not a waste of time for the press which is who they're for. Gives them plenty of quotes which they can run their stories with. It's since they've been getting streamed on YouTube in the last few years where issues arise. They get scrutinised to the nth degree. Whether it's the odd word they've said wrong, body language etc etc. Fans also like to completely mis-quote them in the case of Tom Lees and Michael Duff in the last few weeks. If these weren't streamed, you wouldn't get these issues, but you'd go back to the issue of complaints of how bad our content output is etc...

To be fair, why do they even need a player at each one? not every club does that, why do we bother? Maybe every now and then but no need each week surely?

Not sure you can blame players for being crap in front of a camera but the worry is if it is genuine defensiveness.
Last season there was some weird comments from players and a lot of ear cupping like they felt victimised by the fans.
I do wonder whether that culture has been allowed to fester even with a new coaching team and a lot of new players. If it has then it shouldn't have been.
If we now have the third manager on the trot complaining that the group is too quiet why wasn't that addresses with the millions of pounds KN has spent?
Duff wouldn't know the group when he came in or their personalities, Cartwright did. Another issue that hasn't been addressed by the man who's job it is to shape the squad?
I do think we'd benefit massively from a Peter Clarke type right now or a Hefele. Bit late now though.

Never watch press conferences. They seem pretty pointless to me now. I’d rather the manager and players spent that time on the training ground.

I stopped watching these ages ago. Talk is cheap. Doesn't matter who fronts up, they all spout the same rubbish. "We know we can be better," "We know how to put it right," "We owe it to the fans," "We have no divine right to points; you have to earn the wins," etc. etc. ad nauseam. We are hurtling towards the wrong end of the table at a rate of knots, but don't worry - everyone at the club that you might care to talk to, knows how to fix it, but it won't be easy.

I think press conferences aren’t to be read into really.Unless they’re coming out balls to the wall like andre did they’re largely irrelevant. Duff has been pretty consistent throughout with his.He tries to be as honest as he can,he has a group of egos to manage so won’t be able to say exactly what he thinks all the time. He stays pretty calm and for me has barely changed in any from coming in to now.He uses certain phrases, but they all do,in fact we all do. Also he’s asked certain questions each week and required to answer them and he can’t determine what those questions will be. I generally only watch them to gauge what I think the team might be from injury updates. You can get other little bits from them but reading into every single word that is said for me is pointless. If they were prepared speeches yes but when you’re answering questions live your answers aren’t always going to be perfect and occasionally they will say things that maybe don’t come across well but it’s not 100% what they mean as they’ve just not articulated it well in the moment. The main thing like I say is to take injury news, anything else pinch of salt.

Their performances in press conferences were indications of a weakness in elements of the communicative part of leadership that must’ve surely had a detrimental impact on the team and our performances. Moore was complete waffle and used the wrong words frequently - Foz was aggressive and egotistical. I think a competent performance like Duff gives us a positive even if we can’t read too much into it. I also reckon the media element is the thing most managers like the least.
