I’m sure he just came on loan, didn’t score and went back to Forrest

That summer we signed four strikers: Rhodes, Novak (signed in Jan but loaned back to Gateshead), Theo Robinson and Joe Garner. It quickly became apparent that Rhodes and Novak were the best pairing, but Theo was the usual deputy. Garner barely got any minutes, can't recall if he got injured or just didn't settle, but he became a bit of a forgotten man. He did go on to have a decent lower league career after us, but I wouldn't say that makes him "underrated" by Town fans. Then again he didn't have enough game time to be branded shite either. I'm like a broken record at this point, but Collin Quaner gets a lot of not hate but derision from some fans, which I don't think he deserves. Even if he was as bad as some make out (or as bad as he looked- it was pretty comical at times seeing him wobble his way around baffled defenders!) he still had a massive positive impact for the club. Some can't see past his ungainly stature though. The fourth striker was Robbie Simpson not Garner. Oops! Thanks for the correction... now trying to place Garner, as I've been under that misapprehension for a while!

Martin Smith certainly seems to be one even based on some of these comments. 30 goals in 75 starts for someone that often played wide left as well as up front. There was a stage it was almost embarrassing because he was winning man of the match (when it used to get announced) every single home match. I think him following Stewart and getting a very bad injury is probably the reason he's under rated.
Delroy had his moments and was exciting when he came through.
Cadamarteri used to work his absolute bollocks off although he ended up often playing wide right.

We signed Joe Garner on loan the summer after the one where we signed Rhodes, Novak, Simpson & Robinson. Garner was a decent player, except when he played for us.

Alan Gowling never really got the recognition that his contributions deserved. Perhaps because he wasn’t Frank Worthington. Or maybe because we kept getting relegated with him in the team?

So many!
Many Town fans didn’t rate Roberts as he wasn’t on the same style as Maskell.
Starbuck was immense at times but disappeared under Warnock.
Smith was very good but could never replace Stewart in the fans’ eyes
Novak was a great foil for Rhodes and a far better player than Alan Lee.
Healey will come good if we keep him fit!!!

He honoured is contract & could have left after the 1st drop but stayed, without him it would have been a lot worse......AG was one of the reasons some of us kept going in those dark years.

Personally think Wells was drastically underrated by a lot and - whilst there were stories around contracts - would have been a cracking squad player in the prem and then better than most strikers we had in the championship .

Alf Lythgoe - 42 goals in just 72 top level appearances for Town between 1934 and 1938. Came from Stockport County, went back to Stockport County. There must be an interesting backstory to this.
