You’re not comparing like with like here though. Slawit, Lindley, Marsden, Holmfirth all doing well because they’re now desirable suburbs that provide for the needs of their immediate (and by Huddersfield standards I guess) affluent communities and now draw wider visitors in as a result. Not sure you can recreate that in any meaningful way down at the Stadium. I spend a lot of time at Media City in Salford. Loads of bars and restaurants, thousands of resident apartments and it’s still quiet Sun - Wed. Was at the Chill Factor yesterday - slopes were busy, Costa, Wetherspoons and the climbing centre deserted at 6pm. They’ll make their money at the weekend I’m sure, but evidence for me that this ‘build it and they will come’ mentality is a bit misguided. How many hospitality businesses survive and thrive? Not many. Who on earth needs a hotel room on a Wednesday night at an edge-of-town centre football ground in Huddersfield? How many people would be needed to provide critical mass for any kind of development. Sorry to be the doom monger and hope in five years time people are shoving this thread down my throat. The fans of the Champions League clubs that we'll be playing in a few years time And people travelling for work, who want a few bars and restaurants instead of the Premier Inn at the Corn Mill?..

Not sure if its been covered , but the Town shop is moving into Rope Walk , thus freeing up the existing shop to be part of a 'Tunnel Bar' I believe , which I think has been mentioned previously. Additional drinking and eating venues are really needed to take some pressure off H Town which is proving a success , and the only real current option (apart from outside fanzone or going into the ground early)

How many people are likely to be travelling to Huddersfield for work and requiring hotel accommodation on any given night do you think? And of those, who are going to be willing to pay more than the aforementioned Premier Inns and Travelodge? And who’s building this new hotel?!

Got to disagree here. Think context is important. What might work in Leeds, Manchester etc, or even smaller more affluent towns, is not directly transferable to Huddersfield. Just this week we’ve seen a range of leisure facilities shut down in the town centre because there isn’t enough demand for their services. It’s a ghost town day and night. The driving range was great until it shut. If it could be reopened profitably, then surely it would already have been? I’m not disagreeing that more stuff is needed on a match day mind, but thats 25 days a year the site is in use. The cinema seems to work. Everything else that’s been tried has closed eventually. Presumably because demand just isn’t there? Like I say, I would love to be proved wrong as would love for Town to diversify their income streams and not be constantly reliant on an owner with deep pockets to keep them afloat. I think the issue Town has is it's all patchwork and spread out We have the Leeds Road retail park (B&Q). Then you have the Northern Retail park (the Range). Then the one off Bradford road (Dunelm) and then smaller ones in Waterloo etc. It's all diluted Then you have horrific road planning - it' can take an age to get out of the Northern Retail. Same with Sainsbury on Shorehead. It's just all badly designed You go to places like Oldham (Elk Mill) and Ashton (Snipe Retail Park) and they have massive retail parks with more shops in one place that pull people in (despite being near the Trafford Centre and Manchester City Centre which is massive competition). Ashton then also has a Leisure park with a cinema, bowling alley, Village Hotel and a lot at the restaurants there that are not in Huddersfield like Wagamama, Five Guys, Chiquito The planning from KMC has been really bad and continues to be so. Even this Huddersfield blue print is a total waste of an opportunity to jump start the Town - they should have copied Barnsley's new Glass Works complex to replace the enclosed market. That looks like a success in a poorer northern Town If the infrastructure is right then we should be able to have what Ashton has - and I don't regard matching Ashton as being that ambitious or out of reach I think with the land around the ground, the death of the Town centre and a population of around 300k there's an opportunity for the football club to capitalise Ooh Chiquito lol.

The town centre is drab. Absolute no appeal to get people to go there personally. Yet villages are now busy every weekend and a lot of evenings through the week. Good food, good drink and a bit of buzz does wonders. An idea would be to create a ring of bars/restaurants at the driving range. A little bit of a hub for food and drink. Part of the problem is the Uni. It's been a big success in many ways, but it feels like the entire economy of the town centre is geared towards catering to the large numbers of wealthy overseas students mostly from China. They don't do the student nights out like the domestic students do, and even the domestic students don't drink and party like they did ten years ago. It feels like every time a town centre building goes on the market, it gets turned into student flats... and often the luxury end of that market which is mostly filled by overseas students. It's also all privately owned so it's not like the uni itself benefits from the rental income. Younger people also don't have the disposable income for leisure activities, only the older generations do. That's why the smaller towns and more wealthy villages seem to have more going on. My parents lived in Skelmanthorpe until my dad passed away in 2020 and they could get their entertainment without leaving the village. My dad only went into Huddersfield itself for Town matches for the last five years of his life, because there was nothing there for him that he couldn't get more locally. Huddersfield is bloody depressing now, not just the many empty shops and the multitude of dodgy businesses (vape shops, Turkish barbers and the like) but also the dossers and vagrants everywhere. It feels like you're taking your life in your hands walking through town now. Though Dewsbury is even worse. Batley is actually doing okay for the size of the place, but again many of the premises seem to be occupied by restaurants that never seem to have anyone going in them, so I've no idea what keeps them afloat. I have a few theories but I'll leave those for now. It doesn't help that KMC are bloody useless and couldn't organise the Xmas do for Magic Rock. But then they've always been useless and I don't expect that to change all of a sudden. At least they won't be in charge of the stadium itself for much longer so it just might have a fighting chance. Still not convinced that moving the club shop into the Rope Walk is a wise move though. If Greene King are struggling to find a tenant for it as a pub, I can't imagine that it'll be more profitable for them as the Town club shop.

Many contractors/personnel in a variety of trades/industries. I've no idea of prices. A construction company probably. I used to do some work for hotel chains and it opens your eyes a bit. Naively thought they were mainly for holidays. It's all corporate stuff like training camps. In Leeds; British gas, Asda, Northern rail etc booked out half a hotel M-F for weeks on end to train the new intake of graduates or middle managers some new sales procedure or first aid training etc. Just the food allowance alone was a tidy sum. Leeds has been at capacity for a while now and any new hotel hardly seems to make an impact. Especially when there is a bigger event like the UKREiiF the whole city books up very early. For the stadium hotel it could work but probably needs better access to the train station. A shuttle bus would do, but included in the tram plans even better or Barry Shearmans cable car for a laugh.

Does investment in the stadium and related retail/hospitality count towards the FFP cap? Seem to recall (maybe wrongly) that putting money into the training ground didn’t count.

FFP is concerned with your Profit and Loss Account. Infrastructure investment primarily touches the P&L as an annual depreciation amount on the asset. This "cost" is then excluded (along with youth / womens / community development expenditure) from the Adjusted Earnings Before Tax figure used for the Profit & Sustainability calculation.

As an, outsider since 1973, my view is some bits are good. People probably hate the ring road, but at least it is actually a ring road, which goes all the way round. I have no problem negotiating it, whether I stay at Travelodge or Premier Inn or come in via M62 or M1, as my family are from that side, Flockton and Skelmanthorpe. Compare it to somewhere like Darlington, which has half a ring road on the lower side, nothing at all elsewhere. I'm inclined to agree regards the retail parks, they seem from your description a bit widespread, but even Teesside Park, much larger and used by both Middlesbrough and Stockton doesn't cover every store, (Dunelm and B&Q on Portrack as examples) it does though have both Bowling and Cinema venues, as well as fast food restaurants. It's swings and roundabouts. The A66 took out a lot of Middlesbrough, and the Town is awful, yes even worse than what many think Huddersfield is. I'll admit, I'm way behind on what's being planned for around the ground, but generally I find Huddersfield easy to negotiate. Mind I've only ever walked into Tesco or Sainsburys, but have used Morrisons a lot at Watreloo with no problems, as dad lived at Fenay Bridge latterly. PS. I was amazed at how shit pc world is in Hudders on Leeds Road, it is crap compared to PC World Teesside Park. NB. I'm not advocating either are any good as such.

You could say it’s a nationwide problem, but it’s firmly down to the council who rank as the worst in the country for me. Absolute set of morons there top to bottom. Mostly dinosaurs intent on doing as little work as possible while still taking a wage. No ambition or changes allowed as it may upset the aforementioned system in which they get paid their pathetic wages. You can point to cultural changes, changes in shopping habits, the national government, covid or whatever else but despite that many other towns and cities across the country have survived or done well. The issue with Huddersfield has been entirely self-inflicted and down to piss poor leadership. Ironically something you could also say about Town until very recently.

Interesting albeit heard fair bit before. The club store in old rope walk be better though And the ticket office.. Its quite an obvious solution to Ken Davy's, "its too windy buying tickets, we're investigating wind shields" problem. Just take it indoors!! 🤷♂️ Aside from that, it makes a lot of sense...the separation of ticket and merchandise sales today must lose a significant amount of potential random midweek footfall into the shop. Being honest, I can't really remember the last time I actually queued at the ticket office, perhaps a couple of Wembley's back, but I certainly wouldn't have had a nosey in the shop, even though it was merely 75metres or so away! If you're IN the shop to buy your tickets, you'll have a wander around.
