Yeah I watched it, lookslike its going to be a good series. The supermarkets and chicken industry seem to be acting like the Mafia.
Mind you I've always said more people would think more before they ate meat if they saw they way it was reared and dispatched, I used have to call at abbatiors on business years ago, it put me right off for at least a couple of days.

Do you remember the abattoir in Kidsgrove kongy, near the old windmill? One of my earliest memories is of hearing the pigs squealing as me and my Mum walked past. Grim. Still eat bacon though.
I'm not an animal rights nutter but I've long been a bit funny about battery chicken. Cruelty aside, battery chickens are pretty unnatural food. I work with some unpleasant bugs and read a paper the other week that challenged the fact that food poisoning from chicken is due to undercooking, as we're consistently being told - the authors reckoned it was the amount of bugs actually on the chicken causing the problem. Where are the bugs from? I'll allow you to use your imagination on that.

I missed it but will watch the fat-tongued one on Friday. Apparently, he takes some restaurant guests through the process from rearing to serving.

Never went to the Kidsgrove one, been to Greens up Goldenhill, the one in Shelton was the one I disliked the most, I had to go in there to see a bloke and almost got flattened by a freshly gutted pig that came whizzing past on a hook, the smell was fucking awful

I used to visit the old abatoir in Hull with my dad who worked for a pig farmer. It made me veggie for about 18 months but then reality and bacon and cheap chicken came back to save me from starvation.
HFW and the free-range preachy chicken mafia need to get living in the real world. Not in fucking Axminster. There's enough price fixing in this world without getting rid of the masses cheap chicken. If someone wants to eat cheap chemical pumped up shit, let 'em.

Greens is ace - my Dad gets his meat from there and it's usually still warm on the counter, it's that fresh.

I used to play cricket against a team in Suffolk whose pitch was literally next door to an abattoir. The noise the pigs make when they know they're about to get it is horrendous. That was my excuse for dropping the catch that cost us a place in the final, that and the smell.
I worked at a chicken farm for half a day. Horrible, truely horrible.
Jamie goes under cover on a farm. He was really disturbed by what he encountered and reckons it'll put you off farmed chicken for life.
HFW is ace though, I love him.

Oi Pikey, you've just reminded me that I was in the cheapdos last Thursday and some vagrant came in and poured himself a full pint out of the dregs people had left. All sorts went in, ale, lager, wine and spirits.

This was a vagrant from the street. Walked in, went from table to table picking up discarded drinks and poured them into a pint glass. Within 5 minutes he had a full pint which was necked in one and then he left. Whilst the chandos is cheap it isn't actually that bad a pub, sam smiths job. Besides 2 ales and one strong lager in central london for £6.32 aint bad.

I must confess to doing some mine sweeping of my own back in the uni days when the bar had closed but the dj was still playing. It was quite exciting, like Russian Roulette.

It's years since I bought a non free range chicken. I don't even order chicken when I eat out. I remember seeing a similar TV report to what HFW is doing at the moment, and it was horrendous . Add to that what they do to the meat once it's been plucked / jointed etc etc and I will never eat intensively reared supermarket chicken again. Instead I buy game from a local estate* shop, and it's not that expensive. I pay for £3.40 for Pheasants, Partridges £2.30, wood pigeons £1.50 mallards £4.20 and ferretted rabbits for £3.50. All plucked/skinned and drawn. Yes I know the Pheasants have been bred to be shot.....but not all are shot, and at least they've had some sort of life before some bugger emptied a 12 bore up their jacksies. The supermarkets are constantly competing with each other on price. Unfortunately the cheaper prices don't come out of their profit margins, they bully the farmers for cheaper goods, who in turn, recoup their own cut in profit by employing unregistered immigrant workers and un-ethical animal farming practices. Still, a nice plump pre-packed chicken sat on it's own little polystyrene tray wrapped in nice shiny cling film is a million miles away from the horrendous inhumaine conditions it was reared in isn't it? *Not a fugging housing estate or council estate!

I will also say, that the difference in price between an intensively reared chicken, and free range chicken of similar weight is about as much as a pint of beer.
Rather puts it all into context doesn't it?

Hello. I'm an idiot. For God's sake people. THEY ARE CHICKENS!!!!!!!!! You're crying about poultry Hugh. Get a grip man. Yes they are chickens, They also have a right to see daylight, breath fresh air and run about as nature intended before they are slaughtered. Is it too much to treat our food with respect before we kill it?

Chickens don't have rights. Have you ever looked one in the eye? Evil fuckers. Poke your eye out without a thought.
I'm obviously out on a limb here but while I don't think that birds should be mistreated, I really couldn't give a monkeys arse about the quality of life my chicken had before it copped it. I'll certainly not be crying about it when I tuck into my 4th night of roast chicken this evening.

Each to their own.
My personal view is we don't own this planet. We have evolved and learned to use it's resources and animals to enhance our own life styles. I just think that we shouldn't take those animals and resources for granted, and that we should show them a little respect.
