It was mentioned on here (don't know how official it was) that the new manager had a say in the signing of Mark Hudson and CP would know Hudson from Charlton days so it all seems to add up. I'm still not clear what happens about backroom staff. Were the candidates told that they would have to work with the guys already here? (Thompson, Eyre)or might we see new coaching staff come in too? I'm guessing Powell toward the end at Charlton will probably have had to work with people brought in by the new owners so its maybe not that unusual a situation for him. Interestingly - its just been announced that Thompson is in line for the Carlisle job.

With all the manager talk recently and about the issues Malky Mackay had I checked the Wiki page of Herbert Chapman (I know its not reliable) and saw this that I didnt know:
"This attracted the attention of larger clubs and he moved to Leeds City, where he started to improve the team's fortunes before the First World War intervened. After the war ended, City were implicated in an illegal payments scandal and were eventually disbanded. Chapman was initially banned from football but successfully appealed, and then took over at Huddersfield Town, winning an FA Cup and two First Division titles in the space of four years."
So he was a disgraced Manager before he came to us! I wonder if it were now would people on DATM be saying how he shouldnt get the gig as he is clearly a dodgy bloke with his only success at a lower level??!!

When Powell has been looking a shoe-in for the job for the last week or so, I don't get the delay in the appointment. He's hardly been made to feel wanted has he ?

Charlton fan here. I once worked with a bloke from Huddersfield who was a (non attending) Manchester United fan. I don't know if that kind of thing is a prevalent in Huddersfield as it is in London. My point is that true Huddersfield fans stay with their local team, and why shouldn't they with such a great club with such an impressive history? Your good taste as fans will be reflected in the chairman's good taste in appointing Chris Powell. If I can leave the football aside for a moment, you will have a club with great integrity appointing a man with great integrity. Chris is a passionate person who we at Charlton quickly realised oozes class in every way. If those kinds of qualities are important to you then you have hit the jackpot with Chris Powell. Chris has also got a very good football and managerial pedigree too. His playing career speaks for itself...and believe me he was a damn good footballer, he has chaired the PFA so knows that side of things, has coached at Watford and Leicester, and managed with good success at my own beloved club. he is young, will still develop, will sill learn. You won't find a footballer who has worked with Chris who has a bad word to say about him, quite the opposite, he is a naturally inspiring person and is rated by everybody who knows him. In my opinion the fit is excellent, a great man at a great club. Obviously I would want to do you lot 5-0 when we meet at the Valley, and when we meet in the cup this season, but sincerely I absolutely want Chris and Huddersfield to succeed and I hope you win every game you play with him in charge. If you can get over the London thing regarding Chris, if he is given a fair chance, and in the future a bit of money to spend then you will have many more smiles than frowns on your faces when you leave the John Smiths stadium. Whatever you may think of your chairman, in this regard he has shown exquisite judgement.
Very best wishes guys.

When town and Charlton were going for promotion from league one, Lee Clark was linked with every other job going. I remember wondering why Chris Powell wasn`t as he was doing an equally if not better job at Charlton. Think it could be a good appointment for both parties.

Yes it is, and in doing a bit of researchwhen his name was first linked, it was comments/history like this that helped me to be much more positive toward him as a potential candidate. There may well be some genuine issues still, and certainly not the 'perfect' manager to please everybody on datm, but he does appear to be an excellent choice, and one we can get behind.

Id like him to raid his old club and bring Johnnie Jackson with him Interesting that you say that. The fans love Johnnie as he is a great character and captain. However he is no longer a guaranteed starter in our new look team. He signed a 2 year contract in the summer, so I doubt he'll leave, but I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up working with Powell in a coaching capacity in the future.

Ironically we played Huddersfield at home in our first match after Chris was sacked. Were any of you there? Anyway the crowd was low, a lot of us were utterly depressed, but in the third minute (Chris was our No 3 as a player) we managed a rousing and moving tribute to him that was as heartfelt and sincere as you could get. I am looking forward to February 28th next year, and I for one will stand and sing and applaud long and loud for the Huddersfield Town manager. Results and stuff ebb and flow in football, in such a transient life it is fitting to recognise class, and I am sure our fans will recognise a man with class when he first returns.
Then I will want to tonk you 5-0 :-)

Cue abuse but for me Powell is a hugely disappointing gamble. We deserve better. Left his last club bottom of the league and recruited countless players and sold them for peanuts (when viewed in the whole). Why are we getting excited about this? Robins was hardly an inspirational appointment but this is even less so.
For me, I will have my Saturday's back cos' I ain't handing over my hard earned for this. Of course I hope I am am wrong but after 50 years supporting them this has left me with no desire for any more.
