I think he has the potential to be a very good goalkeeper if he is playing first team football not warming the bench at QPR and playing reserve team football. And, if it is his agent who is "moving the goalposts" surely if Smithies wants to stay surely he can tell his agent to do one and sign the contract anyway?

I heard that before Smithies broke into the 1st team, he'd said if he didn't get a chance, he would be looking to leave.
Draw your own conclusions about how much Smithies is invloved in his contract talks.
Personaly, I hope he stays, but I doubt he'll still be playing for us when he gets into his prime.

Course he's involved in his contract talks. Do you seriously think his agent can move the goalposts without asking him? Alex pay's the agents wage.

Of course, that's the reason for his poor performance on Saturday. It's a difficult enough position without the goalposts being constantly moved.
With all this going on, I wonder if Clark may consider not selecting him tomorrow?

It would be best for him now to be playing first team football. He's 18, sign a 2 year deal and look at it again once you've had two years in the first team IMO. If we offered him his original deal to the penny then it will be a good crack like.
Key time for Smithies now. He needs to weigh up what wuld bebest for his overall career and that, IMO, is to be playing first team football as he'll learn much more that way.

My point was, a lot of people are suggesting his agent is at the root of all the uncertainty. If it's true that he said he wanted to play 1st team football, or he would look to find another club, then he is offered a contract that he has requested, then turns it down, then surely there must be question marks over his motivation to play for Huddersfield Town. Smithies is a good young keeper with lots of potential, but he's only had a couple of stand out games for us. I for one don't think he's earned the right to be changing his demands. Lets be honest now, if he never improved from the level that he's at now (which I admit is unlikely), he would struggle to get a game at a decent Championship club.

Agents are sadly inevitable and unless players either develop their own level of knowledge over-night they will always have an majorm impact on the game.
What's logical to each of us won't necessarily be how Smithies and his agent are thinking. They will want the best deal now. All you can hope is that the player and his agent have enough respect for Dean and the club to be open and honest especially as we have developed him to now. I say hope as if there are big clubs and big money that won't come into it.
Dean must get the best deal for Town at the end of the day, remember what happened with Bostock at Palace.....

Spurs have signed Cudicini.
Could Alex be on his way?

I would have thought having an English under 23 year old backside on the bench helped to satisft the new proposed league criteria. Might be a bit soon to think about it, but if they bought him and loaned him back to us for next season it might make more sense.

Smithies is getting too big for his boots and is heading for a fall. He has not even learned his trade yet!

sorry, I cant see him staying after this season, good luck to him if he wants to leave..... we need players that want to play for the blue and white stripes and not just wanting big money contracts !

Agree 100% here Nick. The lad is still only 18 and still needs afair bit of experience. If he moves to a top club he'll only be bench warming or most probablybe sent out on loan to a lower league club that includes Championship to League Two.

If he leaves Town I wish him no luck at all, and hope he spends many years sat at home on a Saturday afternoon.
If he doesn't want to play for Town and is only after the money then f*ck him. I hate players like that, and always will.
Will be interesting to see if he does sign a new contract, what the terms are, and if we have had to up our offer, and if we have, by how much. Cant see Deano being too happy with whats happened, makes me wonder if we will up our offer in a bid to keep hold of him.

IF he goes to a greedy league club they will just loan him straight back out.
