Trying to make out we're just a set play side... we're all over them. Too bloody right we are, a lucky break for our goal apparently

Went to match. By far the better side and deservedly won 0-2, as accepted by more knowledgable Saints supporters. I'll prepare more notes later. Dead chuffed!

You can all read reasonably dispassionate reports of the match on the Southern Evening Echo and on the Saints official web page, where coach Martin Hunter accepts that Saints lost every individual battle, as he put it. So, I won't seek to prepare a report, but rather reflect on matters. Hunter only partly got things right, in the sense that he seemed to imply that, as individuals, Saints were inferior to Town. I doubt if that's the case. What is certainly true is that Town are a proper TEAM, all of whose members know what to do, and do it well. I actually feel a little upset, as a local resident, that Saints were so bad (and Town so good) because I would like to see academy graduates entering the Saints first team squad. A couple of weeks ago Ronald Koeman said he didn't think there were any younger players (other that Targett, who is in the squad) who would make the grade, but he has later accepted he hadn't seen all of them in a competitive match. He has now, but his opinion won't have changed, even though 4 (I believe) of last night's team have played Premier League football. He will, instead, be thinking he might like to consider making a bid for some of the Town lads. A Saints supporter wrote last night in the equivalent of DATM that it was like a junior school Dads versus boys match, such as the disparity. A little extreme, perhaps, but not wide of the mark. Very few of the Saints supporters at the match gave credit to Town, but I had the good fortune to sit next to a former non-league player who knew his stuff, and roundly applauded Town's second goal, and was appreciative of the better football coming from Town. NONE of the Town players played badly. Some were really good. Billing was simply imperious in the first half, almost reminding me of Stevie Gerrard. He tired later, but lasted the match, a testament to his recovery from his recent injury. Holmes was just quicker thinking than anyone else oon the pitch. Sure, he was rightly booked for a poor tackle, and he does give the ball away a few times. However, he deserved a goal after scything through Saints' so-called defence, but hit the bar, and I was very impressed by his work rate and his tackling back. Really impressed. He should be in the first time squad before he gets frustrated and moves on. I have no real idea if any of these lads will make the grade at Championship or above, but Regan Booty LOOKS like a real footballer, and carries himself accordingly. A proper buzzer midfielder. The three of them are the core of the side. Much was made of the attacking prowess of Senior and Hanson. That's justified, but I feel both should also learn how to defend a little more. Hanson was skinned a couple of times by Sims, a nippy winger. Their attacking play obviously led to the goals and it was their pace, coupled with midfield dominance, that won the game. Allinson looks a competent keeper. Charles has intelligence (winning corners he had no right to after a full length break from defence). Boyle is a sound anchor in defence and a good captain. If he had a little more pace he'd be great. However, I don't want to make too many comments on individuals (apologies for omissions) bur rather to focus on the team. It is really apparent that Bunn and Lillis have made a team that is more than the sum of its individuals. They do that through, as mentioned before, giving each player their duties, BUT the system does not deter flair, speed and passion/commitment. (Some tackles were really strong but clean. The referee did a good job and kept the game flowing. He used his linos well - seeking advice where necessary.) This academy team is really good and has to be retained. What next? I would suggest that few inidividuals are moved into the first team until (unless!!!) they are knocked out of this Cup and the first team's position in the Championship for next season is assured. Then, please Mr Wagner, get perhaps 5 or 6 of them playing 1st team matches before the end of the season. This team is our future, don't let it slip away.

Still some patronising comments on Saintsweb: "a talented under 21 should look good at home to Huddersfield!" What a cheek.

Delighted to be able to say I was at the U 21 Cup game v Southampton. I must thank the host club for giving me access to pitchside and to use a camera. The game gave us the most complete performance from HTAFC that I have seen to date with every player committed to a super work ethic. I look forward to my next chance to see them play and develop further. Hope he gets on the bench on Saturday. 3-0 up so he can get 30 minutes on the pitch.

Good 3-2 win for the u18s v Crewe. Should of scored more. Central midfield triangle controlled the game and created lots.

No Coughlan, Kane, Boyle or Billing though Sent from my SM-G900F using proboards I wonder if Billing's "status" within the club/squads will increase if the impending departure of Huws goes ahead, maybe that's one of the reasons he didn't feature today. In other news I've just tried a simple math problem and not sure I have the correct answer: 2+2=3?

Charlton on Monday for u21s. I would think that they will have to do it without big Phil.

Why would Billing not be playing? I'm sure the club would want the U-21s to win the cup, and recognise that Billing is integral to that objective, no matter his burgeoning role in the first team. I'm not able to watch against the Addicks, (I went to St Mary's) so I really do hope to see a full report from those on DATM.

There's no way Billing will play for the U21s tomorrow v Charlton after playing for the first team yesterday.I would hope Will Boyle plays to get Saturday's game out of his system & he needs the game time.Would expect a very difficult & different test against a Charlton side that are flying at the moment & on a very long unbeaten run.Shame the game was not given an evening kick off under the lights so more people could of attended instead of being at work?
