Surely if your going to make a poll you should include all the players. Not knocking Dixon, but very strange that you would include him in it and not Lynch who has arguably been our most consistent player this season. For me it's a toss up between Lynch and Vaughan, with Lynch just edging it as Vaughan hasn't been in great form since returning from suspension. Lynch arguably our most consistent player? You sure mate? Hes had some cracking games and is VASTLY improved on last season in both performance and attitude, but hes also had some stinkers along the way. He doesn't come close to Hammill, Smithies or gerrard in terms of consistency IMO. Don't think hes even that consistent in individual games. Like reading- great for 70 minutes, all over the place for the last 20. Derby- a bit calamatous for a while after coming on, then great for the rest of the game. Id rate him alongside Clayton or vaughan, in that when hes on form he can be great and look our best player, but can also be pretty poor aswell when hes not. You did say arguably to be fair. Just my opinion, think he's had one really bad game all season (Leicester away). Granted he will make mistakes during a game, but all players do, Lynch has in the main, been brilliant from day one of the season, whereas Gerrard took about 4 weeks to get anywhere near like the form he is in now, prior to that he was awful IMO (and no not just because of his passing) Smithies has been very consistent I agree, and is having one of his best (if not his best) season(s) for us, however the command of his area is still an issue for me. While there's no doubt it's improved, there's still crosses that he stays glued to his line for, and punches balls that he should be catching. Still, I wouldn't swap him for any other keeper in this division, and it's exciting to know that he still has his full potential to reach. Lynch for me is the beating heart of the defence, and the defender we would miss the most if he wasn't playing. Not that the others aren't, but for me he is the most mobile and energetic CB we have, and the biggest attacking threat from CB. Of course he is error prone, but I still think he contributes more to the back 3 than anyone else, that's not me knocking any of the CB's though, they've all been brilliant 95% of the time. Like I said though, all just my opinion.

Gerrard doesn't though, thats my point. Not in my opinion anyway. Hes been really consistant all season. No double standards at all-I just think gerrards been our best defender- ie at defending, even though Lynch has better moments if you like, like rampaging forward or making a last ditch tackle. Theres a lot of double standards when discussing Gerrard and Lynch, but not from this end mate! Has he slapps? Beg to differ im afraid. He like all of them has had moments of excellence, but he has had some shockers also......barnsley, leicester, brum. I agree him and lynch can get judged differently as lynch is more athletic and composed but more prone to concentration losses but not sure any player can claim to being consistent all season.....perhaps thats why we have beaten the best, lost to the worst and are a comfortable mid table team?!

Because I only had a few options to name players and if you can add more I wasn't aware of it, I do apologise. Life's all about learning, next time I do a poll ill consult you of it's content. Thanks for the input. No need to apologise or get sarcastic, there's a button which says something along the line 'add more fields' or something like that. You can put as many options as you like. Didn't realise about the add more fields button, I was debating putting lynch in but went Dixon instead, I suppose it's testament to how well each and every player is doing ! No hard feelings me olde fruit

I was at the Barnsley and Brum games and no way did gerrard have a shocker in either. Don't think its unfair for Smithies to claim to have been consistant all season. 1 obvious costly error in that time. You'd struggle to find a more consistant player anywhere IMO.

What a refreshing change to be arguing over who has been playing the best instead of who our worst player is!

Dixons a good call. Been great since he got back in the side. Maybe missed too many games though.

Adam Hammill by a mile in my opinion. I think he has been consistent throughout the first half of the season. Top assists. Improved defensively. Him for me, too. Think he's been revelatory in transforming us into an aggressive attacking side. Me three or 23. As dangerous a player as I've seen for or against us this year. Very consistent and adaptable & always willing to take a risk to create something. Yeah sometimes he'll lose it or shoot wide but AH clearly has the confidence at this level and isn't afraid to show it. His career was going nowhere fast so great credit to him, robins and dean for effort & perseverance.

Clayton/Hogg/Norwood
These 3 are getting better by the game and beginning to control the game.
Really enjoying football again, thanks to Robins and this team.
Not forgetting Dean's contribution also, Thanks guy's.

Hang on a minute, why is there more than one selection? Its just Vaughan all the way, there is only one man at Town.....joking aside where is the Lynch option? He's had one or two bad games, namely Wigan but on the whole he is the most improved player, although after last season that wouldn't have been hard!!

Wouldn't say he's individually the standout player this year, but I'd definitely put Lynch in the mix too. I know he's had one or two off days but his composure and pace at the back are hugely important for us. He very, very rarely looks under pressure at the back even when chasing a ball over the top (etc.). Occasional slip ups (e.g. the penalty against Derby), but on the whole a fantastic performer this year.
But equal to his defensive attributes is his ability to get forward, and he can add a great deal to our forward movement when given the opportunity to press up. I genuinely believe the work of Lynch, and more recently Smith, in moving forward from the defence has been a massive contributor to our performances since against Wednesday. Every single player aside the central CB is given the right to attack when the time is right, and that gives us options all over the pitch.
EDIT: Just beat me to it arterrier!

Agreed, everyone is performing well at the moment, long may it continue.
Our defence seems sold (on the whole) which in turn lets the midfield be creative.

Smithies - the best young keeper in the league. Has personally kept us in a number ofgames that we should have been dead and buried in
Dixon - an absolute revelation going forwards. The 352 is pretty much built around his quality of delivery
Lynch - the heart of defence.
Gerrard - solid enough performance, however, what he should really take credit for is the way that he stood up and helped the younger CB lads transition into first team football when Clark/Lynch were out. He held us together at Ipswich and Brighton.
Hammill - the most exciting player we have. I absolutely love it when someone lights a fire under him and he just runs at the defence. To be honest I wish he did this more.
Hogg - was brought in to add bite to midfield, and that's exactly what he's done. Does the legwork so that Clayton can play the ball.
Clayton - was a decent season for him, but then Robins decided to drop him back into more of a Pirlo-style quaterback role, wjere he has flourished. Clayton picks passes that you can't even see are on from the stands.
Ward - getting better and better. Danny adds so much versatility up front, allowing Robins to switch things round, midgame, without the need for subs. He also wins a hell of a lot of headers for not the biggest guy. Potentially the star of the second half of the season.
Vaughan - had an incredible start to the season, though has gone off the boil a bit recently. Hopefully he can kick on again in the new year - key to this IMO is getting another striker in january to take the pressure off a bit.
Honourable mentions (no enough games yet etc.) - Smith (pure class and adds an obscene amount of versitility at the back), Holmes (flashes of brilliance and a footballing brain that is seconds ahead of pretty much everyone on the pitch. Needs time to develop.), Norwood (key to our midfield, though a bit hit-and-miss and potentially replaceable if absolutely needed).
So yeah, very difficult question to answer, but I think based purely on number of point saved, consistency, and pure irreplaceability, I'd give it to Smithies.

It's great that there is genuinely much to debate...and for the right reasons, not cos we're looking for the best of a bad bunch!
Vaughan misses out for me just cos he's not played enough (Smith in this category too but I've hardly seen him put a foot wrong, he looks like he's been playing at this level for ages & looks more like an expensive buy rather than having come from the development squad)
Gerrard has played a lot better this year, but not as well as Lynch for me, who misses out as when he is bad he's very bad, but luckily this is not very often.
I think we all know my opinion of Smithies, premiership quality shot-stopper, not commanding enough in 6 yard box IMO.
Therefore it's a toss up between Clayton & Hammill for me, Clayts just edging it due to the balls he must have to continue with that beard.
However, I think that Robins & his coaches need enormous credit for developing the players as they have & overcoming some tough challenges too along the way.
Very good football being played over the last few months & I don't think we have the number of points our play has merited.

Not got it in for Lynch at all though I accept i probably did a bit last season after hearing one or two stories about his attitude to this club and its manager ( plus how he actually performed for most of the season) Was 4th choice and rightly so and i expected robins to move him out if he could. Maybe he would have done but his wages meant it wouldn't happen. Either way, as its turned out Robins and Lynch both deserve a lot of credit for turning a very bad situation around and leaving us with the player we thought we'd get when he signed. When hes on form hes a hell of a player and hes having a great season overall. But he's still a bit of a Titus bramble IMO. Generally good but will have some bad lapses in concentration on a reasonably regular basis. Gerrards less spectacular but far more consistant and error free. Thats why i don't hold with this 'Lynch is our best defender by a mile' rubbish.

I've gone for smithies simple because last season the boo bitches were on him like a cheap suit every time a ball came within 20 yards of him and he's made some Brilliant saves and saved us a shed load of points. Putting up with some appalling abuse last season (from his own, ?), the lads a pup still FFS! Fuck all you boo boys, flapper?? Very original. Bet you didn't call him flapper when he saved that penalty last week.

You could feasibly argue any of Smithies, Hammill, Vaughan, Clayton, Lynch, Gerrard (unless you're one of them that gets caught up in the fact you think he's fat) and in patches Norwood, Smith, Dixon, Ward, Hogg. That's a full team, if you put them together it might or might not be our best team but to have so many players that have played solidly throughout the first half of the season shows how far we've come and how far they've come as players. Personally I don't panic when I see Gobern, Scannell, Paterson, Wallace, Holmes, Woods, Bennett or Clarke in the side either, we're just one or 2 clinical players short of a very good side.
Half time player of the year - Hammill - for adapting to a new role and being consistent and exciting. Half time man of the year - Robins - for getting the best out of the above players, making us enjoyable to watch and competitive week in week out (we'll ignore the Birmingham game!).

Just to echo the thoughts of a few on this thread, I would also like to say that Robins deserves most of the credit for how far we've come, and how well we are playing. We can all sit and debate over who we think the best player is, but Robins is the brains behind what we see on the pitch, and IMO he's doing a f*cking good job.

If Tommy Smith had played all season like he has done since he's come in the team it'd be him, however over the whole season Smithies has been fantastic. A couple of mistakes like any keeper but has won us so many points this season.
Captainslapper, are you Anthony Gerrard or his mum? I can decide etween the two. It's no coincidence that we looked so much better and fluid on the ball after Lynch came on and Gerrard went off on Sunday. Gerrard's done well this year but for you to put him 2nd for player of the season is ridiculous.
