He's only played well since the Sheff Weds game though? Wasn't great up until then. Still Vaughan for me, although Smithies has played consistently well.

Adam Hammill by a mile in my opinion. I think he has been consistent throughout the first half of the season. Top assists. Improved defensively.

Clayton has been outstanding the last couple of months but was poor up to then. For consistency since the first game its either Smithies, Hammill, Lynch or Vaughan for me. Hammill maybe just shading it

Clayton, best midfielder since Gorre or earlier, pray he doesnt get injured, nobody even close to filling his boots

This makes no sense, we are a one man team

I like Clayton a lot too - but we can play and win without him - ie at Bolton. We have quite a few decent options in midfield now. I feel bad not voting for Smithies - but I think I'll go for Hammill. Nice to have some choices!

Hammill - top of the assists charts, doesn't have lots of pace but his pace and trickery means defenders stand off him and draw others to him as well, and he regularly carries the ball a distance and lets the rest of the team move up the pitch. Also lets not forget he's been playing most of the time at right wing back, meaning he's had to do a lot of work defensively. I thought he'd get done easily but that hasn't been the case at all. Shown real professionalism and dedication this season after that unsavoury incident with the paramedic.
Honourable mentions to Smithies and Vaughan.

Smithies for me. Vaughan second and Hammill a very close 3rd.

Clayton for me.
It's a fallacy that he was poor right up until Sheffield Wednesday. He was occasionally poor, but never in this world was he poor all season up to that point. Somebody says it on here enough and then it becomes like the Emperor's new clothes. Poor by his own standards, maybe... but them's some standards!

Hard one to call between Smithies and Clayton.

I'd vote for players who have played to a high standard consistently without peaks and troughs in form, so for me it would be Smithies, Gerrard, Hammill in that order.

His early season form wasn't anywhere close to what he's putting in now IMO. Plenty of games in the early season where his work rate was very low, compared to what it is now. Lynch should probably be on the short list as well, he's been excellent this season and our best defender.

I'm sure he was or at least in the running for 3/4 MOM s prior to Wednesday

Clayton has changed role. Pre the scrap with Paterson he was mainly playing further forward in central midfield with Hogg in the holding role. Since the scrap he has been playing the holding role, picking the ball up deep and controlling play, with Hogg doing the leg work in front. I think Clayton has now found his best position. He's an intelligent player with a good pass in him but not too much pace and a variable work rate. The Pirlo role is ideal for him.

This is a really tough one & I suppose if you're including Dixon, there's also a case to include Norwood & Ward, both of whom have been tremendous in the last 6 weeks or so. Hogg is also a vital player & doesn't get the praise he should do. The fact that its such a difficult choice is testament to the fact that this Town squad has lots of seriously good players in it.
It took me a while, but I went for Hamill in the end, who's been a revelation this season compared to last. Any of the others are worthy contenders (especially at the moment), but in terms of consistency & improvement, its Hamill for me.

Clayton!
Dixon - improved beyond belief Smithies - Top keeper, but still accident prone (I know, but it's what I think!) Vaughan - If he'd played all games he would be neck & neck with Clayts. Hammill - A revelation. I don't mind admitting I thought it was an error to take him back, but he has been excellent. Now, if he could actually beat a player now & again, I think we'd have a multiĀ£m player on our hands.(but I still miss Gary Roberts!)

I've gone for Vaughan but only because Stead isn't an option.
Seriously though I think its quite easy to forget that up until the Burnley game we couldn't actually see how it could be possible to win a game without Vaughan. So in the current circumstances credit must go to the team as a whole, and Robins, but because he hasn't played too often recently we seem to forget that he pretty much single handedly carried the team early on so for me he gets my vote.

You sure mate? Hes had some cracking games and is VASTLY improved on last season in both performance and attitude, but hes also had some stinkers along the way. He doesn't come close to Hammill, Smithies or gerrard in terms of consistency IMO. Don't think hes even that consistent in individual games. Like reading- great for 70 minutes, all over the place for the last 20. Derby- a bit calamatous for a while after coming on, then great for the rest of the game. Id rate him alongside Clayton or vaughan, in that when hes on form he can be great and look our best player, but can also be pretty poor aswell when hes not. You did say arguably to be fair.

Dont think weve had a standout player thus far - the bulk have done well but had bad moments from time to time. Consistency wise smithies has probably edged it imho, but i can understand votes for hammill, gerrard, lynch and vaughan also. Nice to have contributions from many squad players though - sign of a good manager who is getting the best from his whole squad, not just the favoured few.

Not sure you can discredit Lynch for that when you mention Gerrard as POTS who does what you're accusing Lynch of... You've double standards when it comes to Lynch and Gerrard, slaps

Gerrard doesn't though, thats my point. Not in my opinion anyway. Hes been really consistant all season. No double standards at all-I just think gerrards been our best defender- ie at defending, even though Lynch has better moments if you like, like rampaging forward or making a last ditch tackle. Theres a lot of double standards when discussing Gerrard and Lynch, but not from this end mate!
