Not one single (even lower end) Premier League club linked with him suggests he may not be as good as we (I include myself as a fan of his) think he is. Whereas Norwood on form (who I'm less a fan of) was linked with a step up. Then there's Arfield in the Premier League. Funny old game and all that ...

Massive player for us, but if he won't re-sign and Dean thinks we can't afford to let his contract run out we need to be shipping him out ASAP (without settling for a derisory fee obviously) so that we can adequately replace him and rebuild the squad.

Can't say fairer than that, it seems Brighton and Boro have stated openly they'd want Clayts so it's up to Deano and AC to see where they lie. He is a big player for us but if he feels it's time to leave and we want to cash in before he leaves on a free or low fee (IF he doesn't extend his contract) then so be it.

If he wants to go then he can go. Get some decent money and invest it in the squad.
of course i'd prefer he stay, but no player is bigger than the club and no way should we end up letting him leave for nowt.

Then it's all in the hands of Mr Robins to bring in a quality replacement! yep cant see it being much more than a million though.. that's all brighton offered last season when he wasnt in his last 12 months of contract. i worry that we'd spend most of that on bringing someone in and still end up weaker next season than last. if the plan is to use the money to pay kieth andrews and line up with a midfield of him and norwood next season we will struggle. easy to say when its not my money, but might be better off keeping him and bringing through billing and holmes around him this year so if he walks on a free those two can step up

Clayton - really impressive on the ball - invisible off it - I'd like him to stay but won't be gutted if he goes.

players/agents same as the club, hold out for as long as you can to best deal you can. Claytons agent can hang on for another few weeks to see if Dean is prepared to go a bit more. I think our best paid players will certainly be on a par with the best paid at the 'alledged' interested clubs. Brighton will do ok again but wont be in the shake up this time and Boro will be mid tablish. Clayton may well do better signing a years extension and be a big fish in a smaller pond to get noticed by slightly bigger teams than he has done so far?

As much as I'd like Clayton to stay and get said meathead with engine to accompany him in midfield. It would not surprise me if he or indeed the club wish to end their partnership, we have in the past sold Rhodes and eventually replaced him with Wells. Last year we cashed in on an unhappy Hunt. I have been quite vocal about Clayton's lack of athleticism and with Billing and to a lesser extent Holmes and Norwood it maybe that said meathead doesn't necessarily need as good an engine alongside any of those.
As with anything though the club will be working towards a solution be it with or without Clayton in the mix. Onwards and upwards as they say and that is without doubt the way the club has progressed under Deano's stewardship and I hope it will continue along that path.

I just don't get why we've plastered him all over our shirts merchandise if the club have privately accepted he's going.

Do we know they have or is it just assumed they have because it's being reported other clubs are interested? I may have missed it is there something concrete or are we working on the premise that there's no smoke without fire. sent by my TVC15 0 0

Surprised the club captaincy hasn't been announced yet. Perhaps that's to do with Clayton staying or going?

If he wants to run his contract down there`s not a lot we can do about it. We sign enough that have done the same on frees. Other clubs don`t generally bid unless some kind of encouragement has been given them by the player`s agent etc. Time will tell.

Town need to get a grip, we are lacking some ambition here at the minute. Either we cut our losses now and get what we can for him or sign some quality players, a statement of intent, to show him we a serious about matching his ambition and get him to sign an extension, lets be honest the signing of Peltier and Murphy will hardly have him dashing to sign on the dotted line, will they? We can't let the situation drag on too long. I'm honestly beginning to fear the worse regarding next season.

HAVE TOWN OFFERED HIM A EXTENSION ON HIS CONTRACT?

Realise its all a game but for a lot of reasons it would be good to have these things sorted and all the new players starting pre-season together.
