What are we saying then fellas? Good price for us (boro) or for you, or have we met somewhere in the middle? You don't seem to get much for £1.5m these days so I'll reserve judgement until a fair few games in, although wasn't he your player of the year last season? We are currently 'just' in the red re summer spending so far. Emnes and juke leaving freed up a bit of cash and Gibbo is pushing the very limits of ffp after a few years of getting our house in order under Mowbray. Sad to see him go? Happy to replace him with the funds? All the best for the season chaps. Somewhere in the middle. In a fair market I'd have said £3.5m, but given that he has (had!) only a year left on his contract £1.5-2m is more than I'd have expected to get. Best player? Certainly one of our best, but at the same time - playing him & Norwood together didn't really get the best of both & I think it affected Norwood's game more than it affected Clayton's. Hopefully we'll replace Clayton with somebody whose game complements Norwood & Majewski better. Sad to see him go, but for all that he's a good player, he's not irreplaceable and if the money is used wisely it might prove to be a good deal for us. All depends what we do with the money. Whatever happens, it's a big season for Norwood & Majewski.

no you don't.. I think 4 clubs might be playing for the play off spot..boro are not one of them. the top 3 will be as per the bookies..
clayton going to you/not going to you isn't my reasoning for this, either way.. I have never had an axe to grind with boro..
if Gibson wishes to break ffp and take the embargo/fines etc then that's his decision, he might be better off buying a new wing for the hospital up there..
as you can probably tell im not as infatuated with football as I used to be, massive waste of money and im getting tired of paying for clubs like ours to pay too much for too little in return..
clayton like every other player it seems will go anywhere and play for anyone for a few quid extra and his commitment to anything apart from silly cars, silly girlfriends, daft haircuts and designer anything far outweighs his personal commitment to any particular job he presently has.

I see it the same way. I don't really see Boro as anything more than they did last season to be honest. Clayton will only work for them if they have a very well balanced midfield to make up for the limitations of his lack of mobility. Mind you Clayton + Tomlin + legs man would be a very effective midfield 3.

Sounds like alot of you are being very unrealistic, thats football, players always aim to progress in there careers, he had no reason to be loyal to huddersfield, its not like he had been at the club all his life or he supports them. Very little loyalty in football these days but you cant blame him for furthering his career. unless your barcelona/real madrid then you will always have players moving onto bigger clubs

I went to the Riverside last season and it was like a morgue. Look, I wish no ill to Boro, you have got a good player, but at the end of the day we are in a similar boat yours is just paddled by someone with bigger pockets than ours. I wish Clayton the best, if he gets you up good luck to you all but at the end of the day people like me will continue to support HTAFC irrespective and will continue to believe we are just as credible a Championship club as many others in this league.

If he really wanted a chance at the Prem next year, Brighton would have been his destination. All about cash - not his career progressing. I refer you to similar stuff spouted by Blackburn fans about Rhodes.

He is (apparently) your player because you are willing to pay him more than we are, if that makes you a bigger club then so be it but if you don't get promoted he is not furthering his career just enhancing his bank balance. But hey what do I know, I thought Burnley were more likely to be relegated than promoted at this time last year.

But hey what do I know, I thought Burnley were more likely to be relegated than promoted at this time last year. I would agree. Rhodes left for money it was that simple. He recently signed an extended contract for more money. To me if he had ambition to play at a higher level he would not have signed an extended contract with Blackburn. They could eventually get promoted but I don't see them as favorites any time soon. If Clayton signs for Boro I would say the same thing, its not about ambition its about the money. Of course they have a chance of promotion but its not that likely with the other teams that are likely to be competing against. If that is all that motivates someone though, you can't blame them for taking it.

So other than what this 'Boro fan has said, and two links to two totally unreliable newspapers, what is there to actually suggest that there is any truth in this?
Considering Brighton are a far bigger club, with much deeper pockets, and better promotion prospects than 'Boro, I'd be surprised if he ended up at 'Boro instead of Brighton

Dont know how you can class brighton as a bigger club though, a few years ago they were getting 5-6k averages, years since they were in the top flight too. There transfer activity hasnt been the most impressive in this window either, we have just as much of a chance as them of being promoted

It's a difficult one. Undoubtedly Clayton was one of the top performers during the second half of the season, but we shouldn't forget that he was poor for a good few months at the start of the season, which may well suggest that he looked poor in a team that was trying to play fast passing, counter attacking football (and doing so quite successfully), but looked good in a team that was disjointed and lacked any real attacking purpose. In fact, when he and Paterson were withdrawn from the first team after their bust up, there was far more annoyance at Paterson not playing (given our lack of striking options at the time) than Clayton, because most thought that Clayton wouldn't be missed.
In terms of his contribution to the team, he was one of our top scorers, and we will probably miss his goals (unless Norwood and Majewski fill in the space) but he must also shoulder a portion of the blame for the isolation of Wells in the second half of the season. I do not for one second believe that Hogg was told by Robins to play as an attacking midfielder, but he was the only CM who had the pace, desire, initiative and/or fitness to get up and support the striker - neither Clayton nor Norwood really did this. This seems to be overlooked and all of the blame put on Robins' tactics, but I think all of the CMs are to blame for it, particularly Norwood and Clayton who are supposed to be our creative midfielders picking passes in CM! What other reason would they be on the pitch?
I don't think it's a coincidence that Grayson put Clayton on the wing when he had the choice between Norwood and Clayton in the middle, and I don't think it's a coincidence that Clayton seems to have been tactically moved about the CM by Robins - I don't think anybody (even Clayton) really knows what role he is best at. Contrast that with Hogg (sit in front of the defence, hassle players and slow the attack down), Norwood (pick the ball up from the back and start moves off from deep) and Majewski (get the ball further up and fully link with the strikers) - Clayton could have been a good box to box midfielder but as suggested above, there was something (I don't think it was entirely Robins) preventing him from doing that. If we replace him with a defensive minded midfielder, I think we could see a far more balanced midfield this year and one that brings the best out of Norwood (incidentally, whose good form was in the first half of the season when we were playing good football).
We definitely need to bring another CM in to replace him, though. Holmes should develop to be challenging Majewski by the end of the season, if he is going to make it at Town, and will be a good player to step in for a few games if/when necessary. However, from what I've seen of Billing he's too lightweight at the moment to provide real backup for the other two, same with Tronstad. Peltier could do a job there, but even in L1 it felt like he was a defender making do in midfield. A player like Hogg but who can pass the ball consistently would be ideal, but I don't really know who there is out there!

I think the reason you are looking for is that he is quite a slow, measured player. He hasn't got the energy or legs to be a box to box player. I too think there is an opportunity to improve the midfield balance if he has gone.
