Moved forward? Get real. Same old, same old and any perceived progress is simply down to other teams being even worse. If that is good enough for unambitious imbeciles like yourself best of luck, may be you can give yourself a little tug if we finish 12th sometime but 'progress' on this basis is unsustainable. Is finishing 19th, then 17th and now being 16th moving backwards then? Or unsustainable, like if we continue on that path we'll eventually go down? You do understand how the league table works don't you? Maybe an imbecile could explain it to you. To be fair the league position is but one indicator of progress (and is susceptible to things like Blackpool's implosion, making it effectively a 23 team division). There'd be other rubrics I'd look at - goals scored, points gained against the top half, even cup runs, to be fair. That isn't to say I disagree with you, I think progress is being made; slowly, and frustratingly so at time, but progress none the less.

As i mentioned it...
12/13 - 21 @ 0.86 ppg 13/14 - 17 @ 0.71 ppg 14/15 - 24 @ 1.09 ppg
(Record against the top half - two games to go)

So we get a good result at granted a tough place to go when the home Team have nothing to play for and everything is 'rosy in the garden'. Let's forget Powell's overall record here and the amount of unacceptable performances. Let's forget the countless defeats and 'no shows' in key games. Let's forget the unentertaining brand of football with fans leaving in droves. Let's forget what will be extremely poor season ticket sales. Let's forget his tactical house when it comes to substitutions. Let's forget that the future success of our Club is reliant on bringing younger home-grown Players through as we cannot purely buy to stay at this level and the fact we see very little of this. Let's not forget that I wouldn't swap Brentfords squad for ours and look at where they are in the league (and I believe their brand of football is high-tempo / attacking / entertaining). Their first season back at this level. Let's just be happy that we are surviving at this level and not making real progress (and please don't mention a few more points or a couple of league places as progress, real progress means much more than what has been served up this season). We have a squad littered with quality footballers, many of whom I suspect will create interest from other Clubs in the summer. The squad is by and large a good squad and Hoyle doesn't need to buy a load of Players. Many think we need a load of Players because our Manager isn't getting the best out of the ones he has got. Burnley last season, would you have swapped their squad for ours before a ball was kicked?. I wouldn't and like many thought they would struggle. They didn't and in Dyche had a Manager that by and large made great Players out of good / ordinary ones. Now that's Management. I am of the view with the right Man at the helm, this squad and our football Club is capable of so much more, without Hoyle getting hs cheque book out (again). Or if you are going to spend money Dean, spend it on a high quality Manager. That would be a shrewd investment if they could get the very best out of a talented and existing squad. Giving Powell money to spend in the transfer market I fear will not be. Oh but hey, we won at Forest. What else matters?. While we're in a forgetful mood why don't we forget that you haven't seen HTFC win a match for 12 months. Let's forget you're not renewing and admit you're not best placed to comment or offer an opinion. Let's forget you're bitter because you're not part of any clique and haven't got a red star. You crave entertaining football and Mark Lillis but when Powell starts to produce glimpses of it you show no signs of support for it and advise Dean to go for a profile manager? Great stuff fella...

Oh but hey, we won at Forest. What else matters?. I was also starting to think this, a better, more motivated manager could get this team higher than where we are. However, CP deserves credit for this past week and a chance to have the summer - the players obviously take to him which is more than previous managers. The only thing that annoys me is when he says 'the game was heading for a draw,' and sets us up to take that after 70 or so mins. This is double frustrating when it's at home and triple frustrating when the other team snatch victory just like Leeds did. I'm still on the fence, see how this season ends and what we do in the summer.

So we get a good result at granted a tough place to go when the home Team have nothing to play for and everything is 'rosy in the garden'. Whos saying that? Not being tediously negative doesn't mean you think everything is fine and dandy!!Let's forget Powell's overall record here and the amount of unacceptable performances. His overall record isn't bad though. The amount of 'unnacceptable parformances' is no different than any other manager- less than many we've had.
Let's forget the countless defeats and 'no shows' in key games. 'Countless'?? thats be 14 under his management. Not that hard a number to count to is it? Maybe you can count to 12 which is how many wins hes had? Maybe he'll have more wins than defeats by the end? 'Countless no shows' , an even smaller number for you. Yes we've been lousy in a few games. Shocking, how unnacceptable, sack the board.
Let's forget the unentertaining brand of football with fans leaving in droves. Yes, this year weve had to snore our way through the Ipswich, Fulham norwich Leeds, reading, Wolves games. But if theres been a poor game, that means EVERY game is dull doesn't it. Bit like thoughout our history when every game was butt clinchingly exciting. yeah sure. Let's forget what will be extremely poor season ticket sales. How do you know? Lets hope any 'fans' not renewing are the shit negative loving ones.Let's forget his tactical house when it comes to substitutions. Some validity in that IMO. Some I agree with, some i don't. Same as every other manager. His job is on the line if he gets too many wrong.Let's forget that the future success of our Club is reliant on bringing younger home-grown Players through as we cannot purely buy to stay at this level and the fact we see very little of this. You want to go through a list of players weve bought since weve been in this division? For someone highlighting the benefits of memory, yours seems pretty shite. Anyone with half a brain understands that the benefits of the investment in our academy will take time to come through.Let's not forget that I wouldn't swap Brentfords squad for ours and look at where they are in the league (and I believe their brand of football is high-tempo / attacking / entertaining). Their first season back at this level. Good for them. So someone has a better team than us? how unnacceptable !! They're where brighton were last season- brighton who are now below us. In fact below us along with 5 clubs who were recently in the Premier Divison. Let's just be happy that we are surviving at this level and not making real progress (and please don't mention a few more points or a couple of league places as progress, real progress means much more than what has been served up this season). No lets ignore the progress and roll about on the floor kicking and screaming like a melodramatic drama queen who's desperately trying to bad mouth our club?? Thats the way to be a fan!!We have a squad littered with quality footballers, many of whom I suspect will create interest from other Clubs in the summer. The squad is by and large a good squad and Hoyle doesn't need to buy a load of Players. Many think we need a load of Players because our Manager isn't getting the best out of the ones he has got. I sn't he? You seem determined to judge our season and Powell, entirely on one shit week where we lost 3 games badly. Burnley last season, would you have swapped their squad for ours before a ball was kicked?. I wouldn't and like many thought they would struggle. They didn't and in Dyche had a Manager that by and large made great Players out of good / ordinary ones. Now that's Management. Yet Id bet a lot of money if you were a Burnley fan, you'd have been vocally boring the tits off everyone willing to listen about Dyche isn't good enough for Burnley and needs sacking after hed been there 6 months!!I am of the view with the right Man at the helm, this squad and our football Club is capable of so much more, without Hoyle getting hs cheque book out (again). Or if you are going to spend money Dean, spend it on a high quality Manager. That would be a shrewd investment if they could get the very best out of a talented and existing squad. Giving Powell money to spend in the transfer market I fear will not be. Im not convinced either. Time will tell but changing manager every year is not going to work out for us and if anything sends us backwards, that chopping and changing will. So far hes doing 'ok' . Not great, but 'ok'. Why not give him time to either fail or succeed instead of making shit up and grossly exaggerating things to try and convince yourself that you are 'right'.
Oh but hey, we won at Forest. What else matters?. Supporting the club?? Bigging it up for once?? Talking proudly about it instead of hammering it in endless invented negativity?? We are probably about to finish higher than we have for 15 years- one of our highest finishes in 4 decades. Why not be positive about that? Crazy idea I know, but seems more logical than trying to find things to moan about.

As I said in another thread, give him some money to make a few changes in the summer and see where we are by christmas. I still don't think we've seen enough to be seriously thinking about making another managerial change so soon unless the guy's desperately unhappy. He made changes after he took over at Charlton that saw them finish as champions the following season, it's not all blind luck. OK he won't be signing 19 players but he's got sense to realise he doesn't need to here.

Despite the Powell bashing tripe from Morleyterrier, his record at Town is reasonably good. 12 wins, 11 draws and 14 defeats. That projects to 58 points over a full season & comfortably mid table.
No bad at all considering where he started from & the fact that we're higher up the league table than the likes of Bolton, Reading, Brighton, Fulham & Wigan, all of whom will be operating with much bigger budgets than Town.
Yeah, there have been some poor performances (as with most teams), but nowhere near as many as the doom & gloom merchants make out.

Powell's biggest enemy is his conservative approach. If he can get the right players in and lose his conservatism then we might move considerably up the table. It was in evidence on Saturday, taking wells off with 15 minutes to go for another midfielder, practically handing the initiative to Forest, although they did nowt with that initiative.

Don't you think part of the reason they did 'nowt with the initiative' was in some way down to Hogg coming on for Wells so he had 2 in midfield (with Gobern) both breaking up their play and making it harder for them to put good forward moves together? Wells had done a fair bit of tracking back and was looking a bit jaded by last 10-15 min. Thought it was a decent swap. We still managed a good chance at th edeath with Miller so hadn't really shut up shop.

Fine in theory - but imho and on the day - it led to them looking more likely to score than they did before Nahki went off.

Maybe, but generally speaking teams losing 1-0 will go for it a bit more as the game draws to a close, so will tend to look more like scoring. Thats normal isn't it? We can think back to a few games this season where weve failed to see out a result ( Rotherham springs to mind), so can't help think if he HADN'T made that particular sub and forest had equalised, Powell would now be getting slated for not tightening us up for the final few minutes, especially when we had a tenacious workhorse player like Hogg sat on the bench. As it is, he did and we won. A lot of the criticism he gets is justified, but criticising him when he gets it right seems very harsh to me!!

Been away...Why have we got a new manager?...must admit the results have been better whilst I was away...sorely tempted..a couple of days left yet to make up my mind. Do it. You'll regret it if you don't. We'll go into the new season on the back of our highest finish for many a year ( hopefully) and with a lot of players gone, Powell with the room to piece together his own squad over the summer. Lots to be positive about going into next season IMO. We'll even have ditched that shite home kit !!

Really interesting reading this. There were often complaints about the timing and nature of substitutions under Powell at Charlton, and I also get that to an extent he has a bit of old school conservatism in football. He has been in the game at all levels extensively throughout his life, and the notion of 'if you can't win, don't lose' and other such managerial sayings will run deep in a person of his experiences. I think Powell can be adventurous when he is confident about how the strengths of his teams can overcome the weaknesses in others. Mind you in this league the fine margins are finer than most, away wins are more common, teams can hurt teams at all levels in the championship, basically we are more evenly matched as a division than most others most seasons. Very seldom do you get a completely dominant side in this division, and the managers know that, and are more particular in their approach than say a manager at a top premiership team who as often as not can sling any 11 players out and expect a result most weeks. One feature of Powell at Charlton was his team spirit. Even with the bad results you always had the feeling that players and coaches were together, not that he is a soft touch, but his character and humanity probably proves more effective when dealing with issues than anger and cup throwing. Of course we also used to (and do think) that Chris Powell is a thoroughly decent guy and that is a characteristic that can be a positive force at a football club. As I wrote earlier it really is none of my business, but do any of the doubters think there is an obviously better man available at the moment, given Huddersfield's resources and everything, who would step in and make a transformative improvement? Sean Dyche has been mentioned, and is a good comparison, but I am not sure there is a massive difference between a manager like Powell and Dyche, although Dyche has been at it a bit longer than Powell.

Lets not forget we drew 1-1 at leaders Bournemouth Lets not forget second club Norwich recently sneaked a 2-2 draw against us Lets not forget we hammered third placed Watford 3-1 lets not forget we took 4 points off sixth placed Ipswich Lets not forget we took all 3 points from bogie team Forest last time out Lets not forget we beat play-off hopefuls Wolves 3-1 on their own patch Lets not forget we beat promotion hopefuls Brentford 2-1 Lets not forget we did the double over Reading and Millwall each by a 5-1 aggregate scoreline Lets not forget we've found the net on 52 occasions to date, which is more than 12 other Championship clubs have failed to better.
So, in my opinion Powell is doing OK and he should be given another full season at the very least to show us what he can really do, because sacking him will only destabilise the club.

Can't disagree with the result and if we can learn to close games out on a regular basis like we have done v Ipswich and Forest - well that's a great attribute to have. Just my gut feel when we took Nahki off - was oh bugger - here we go. There certainly wouldn't have been many congratulating Powell for being brave going for a second goal and conceding - despite all the calls for a more adventurous approach from Powell over the last few months. From Birmingham onwards we have had the level of commitment, pressing and tempo needed to really compete in this div - need to see that for the rest of the season and onwards next season and then we will win and draw a lot more games than we will lose - and get better at seeing games out.

the 'initiative' in football matches is not always about who you substitute or even if you don't substitute..
2 strikers miles from the midfield and defence isn't taking the 'initiative'..
adding a midfielder and one fresh forward can be taking the 'initiative' depending on what you ask them to do or what the score is etc..
stopping the losing opposition getting right at your back 4 when they push on, as they have to, can certainly be seen as taking the 'initiative'..
taking off strikers and midfielders and replacing them with defenders who then sit in is certainly surrendering the 'initiative'..be good to see how many games are lost when that occurs in relation to how many points are won from that position..
holding what you have can be done in more ways than packing your penalty area and hoping..

Mirf, we have an Ex-England defender in charge. Please can you tell me how many goals we gave conceded compared to others in the division?.

I'm all for fresh legs and CP's substitutions have been bizarre in that regard. However, we had the initiative before we took Nahki off - we were playing as well as a unit as I've seen for sometime - our back 4 was got at more after we took Nahki off! I agree - asking/telling them to do the right thing is important.

we conceded goals because of how the team set up, not who was actually playing.
most defenders do feel more comfortable being a bit deeper..maybe that was in powells mind?
agreed that if we had much better 'quality' in defence the question does not arise..we have what we have and sitting deep didn't suit them and it showed, time after time.
when we trade attacks with the opposition it works better more often than not(wolves aside and derby to a point)..
I was much happier with the wolves performance than the defensive dirges we have seen..
hopefully we are at the point where we play to our strengths, in the end that's all most of us ask..
