I have just had this response back from Garth Jones! Dear Wayne I hope you are well. Many thanks for your email and I’m sorry to hear you had problems listening to our coverage of Huddersfield Town on Saturday. We understand that as a Huddersfield Town fan, excited by an excellent opening day win, you will be disappointed not to have heard our post-match programme if you do not have DAB in your car. Working in one of the biggest sports regions in the country it is our duty to provide coverage of as many teams and sports as possible. We try to please all, but understand that this will not always be the case in such a wide, passionate sporting area. We have three Football League clubs to cover on Saturday afternoons this season, and thus will spilt our coverage across our three main frequencies – FM, AM & DAB. In terms of Huddersfield Town being on DAB digital, we have come to this decision for many reasons: 1) DAB delivers crystal clear digital quality. As we enjoy such a long and successful relationship with Huddersfield Town, we believe the club and fans deserve this quality. Baloney... and slightly patronising!2) DAB in the Huddersfield area is stronger than AM, especially in the evening. Our main priority is to ensure as many Huddersfield fans have access to the actual match commentary, and DAB, compared to AM, will ensure that. Never had a problem with AM before.3) We have consulted with many Huddersfield fans and the club itself on this issue and the response was clear – Huddersfield fans would prefer DAB to AM. Who? Where? When? Why was it kept secret until the day, if it was going to be so popular?4) 80% of new cars have DAB fitted as standard and DAB adaptors for car radios and personal, portable DAB radios are widely available too. This means DAB in cars is very accessible. I would suggest 80% of us don't drive new cars with DAB.I can assure you that BBC Radio Leeds greatly appreciates the loyalty of Huddersfield Town and their fans over the years. We have reciprocated this loyalty by being the only media outlet to provide consistent match day coverage of Huddersfield over the last 8 years. There are other media outlets, with a remit to cover the Huddersfield area, who have elected not to cover Huddersfield Town. I can also assure you that our commitment to the club and Town fans is stronger than ever. We have provided a dedicated Saturday Huddersfield Town programme, 2-6pm, for the past three seasons. Town feature regularly in our weekday West Yorkshire Sport Daily programme; and from this season will have a dedicated monthly Town special on a Wednesday. All Huddersfield pre and post-match interviews also are uploaded to our website, meaning they are available to all fans 24/7. If you look at other stations that have large sporting patches like us – Radio Sheffield, Manchester, London and WM – they either rotate which club they commentate on or simply do not commentate on certain teams at all. Their pre and post-match programmes are also joined up; meaning each of their clubs may only get 10 minutes of coverage. At BBC Radio Leeds we have striven to do more for fans – we provide commentary of every game for all three of our Football League clubs. We have dedicated programmes on Saturdays for all three – meaning each club gets 4 hours coverage, rather than 20 minutes! I hope this helps explain matters. Thank you again for the email and here’s to a great season for Huddersfield Town Gareth Gareth Jones Sports Editor - BBC Radio Leeds & BBC Kick Off Trainee Reporters Twitter: @wysdaily Address: 2 St Peters Square, Leeds, LS9 8AH My comments in bold.

I think they are saying Bradford and Leeds fans can't afford new cars. Either that or he's a shitologist.

The most surprising thing to come from this thread is that wtd doesn't drive a new car. What's that all about!

Yes, I've received the same standard response, bar the opening few lines. So we're stuck with DAB - or not, in many cases.
Bye-bye RL - you've just lost me as I only ever listen to Town stuff when I'm driving home.

This was my response and then his to mine! Hi Gareth, Thanks for your response to my email. I am a little disappointed with the response to be honest as that still means that I can’t listen to any of the pre or post-match interviews this season without. A) Buying a DAB radio to play in my car as even though I do have a new car, my car still doesn’t have a DAB radio. But also advising to buy one to play in the car is in my opinion dangerous as I am sure if I was messing with the said item then I would be getting in bother with the police and I am sure Radio Leeds won’t pay my fine or take the points that I get for doing this? B) Paying for the Town player app and connecting this to my car every time I get in and want to listen to the commentary. Will Radio Leeds pay the £4.99 a month for this as well? I doubt that very much! Also you said that you have canvassed the fans to see what they want to listen to the commentary’s on, but I haven’t seen this anywhere either on your facebook or Twitter accounts. Please can you advise what you used and how many fans you asked? As from looking on Twitter I can see that there was quite a lot of unhappy fans as well, as they also couldn’t listen to the pre or post show. So what was the problem on Saturday as there was only 2 of the said 3 teams playing so you could have had one on FM and the other on AM. Also don’t Radio Leeds have 4 FM frequencies as well as AM? So why can’t say Huddersfield be on 92.4, Leeds be on the 103.9, 102.7 or 95.3 and Bradford on AM 774? I look forward to your response. Regards Wayne Lockwood Hi again Wayne. I do appreciate your points and frustrations. Firstly we do not use Social media for all of our business and we certainly do not use it as a stable barometer to judge full opinion on any issue. Only a tiny percentage of the population, let alone fans of one particular club, are on Twitter for example. Secondly, we can no longer technically spilt our FM frequencies. Even if we could, when we tried this in the past if did not work successfully and again received complaints. Thirdly, as I say, as much as we want to ensure our pre and post match shows are heard by as many people as possible, our key objective is the actual commentary and ensuring as many people who cannot get to games can hear the match. We believe DAB will do this for Town fans more than AM. Sadly West Yorkshire is a huge area with a massive population and as much as we try, we just cannot cater for everyone's needs, as everyone lives in different areas with different signal strengths and everyone choses different technology to listen to the radio.

More total BS, judging by that response he either thinks Town fans are morons or its a serious response and he's a moron himself. Really looking forward to seeing full details of this consultation that has taken place.

He still doesn't answer the question why Bradford City were on FM and MW when only 2 of the 3 clubs were playing.

It's perfectly clear that they are just fobbing us off and don't give a shite, this comment in particular "Only a tiny percentage of the population, let alone fans of one particular club, are on Twitter for example." I have never read such crap in my life, it's the MAJORITY not minority of Football fans use some form of social media.
No doubt in my mind that the sole reason for this is that Bradford and Leeds have given fatter brown Envelopes than ourselves to the crooks at the BBC.
Fuck em, there are plenty of ways to get free match coverage nowadays.

With regard to his criticism of Radio Sheffield, it's worth pointing out that they stay on air until 7pm rather than switch to shitty Northern Soul. By the time you've walked back to Canalside and had a pint Radio Leeds Football is just about off air anyway. As for DAB, local stations such as RL are a waste of time in the car. They just cut out all the time. Only the national stations work properly.

shocking response from RL...I can't even get DAB where I live, so that's me stuffed...but why give Bradford both FM and AM...? that's the question..how hard is it to swap Town from DAB to Am or FM, like they did last season when leeds weren't playing at same time ? As for the consultation, that's just a plain lie, obviously..

And, my response to RL ...
"Hi Gareth,
Thanks for your prompt response - it was appreciated. However, whilst I still cannot agree with Radio Leeds' new 'policy' I can see why you have done it. But you still didn't answer my original question; why, in view of the fact that there were only TWO games being played on Saturday, did you broadcast the League One Show on BOTH AM and FM, knowing full well that Town fans without in-car DAB radio (probably around 95% of us) would not be able to hear any pre- or post-match reaction? Quite honestly, however you choose to dress it up, that decision stinks.
I also have to inform you that you have now lost at least one listener because I only ever tuned in when driving to and from Town games. Still, you'll now be able broadcast more to the fans who really matter to Radio Leeds, your beloved Leeds United and Bradford City.
Bitter? You bet I am. On the plus side, I won't ever again have to listen to the bloody drivel that is Larry and Paul that precedes Saturday Sport. Those two blokes really are stealing a living.
Goodbye, Mansfield Terrier"

It is churlish of me to complain here as I don't live in WY and I do have DAB in my car but I think there is more than a case of Town being 3rd in the pecking order at RL and thia has always been the case. To be fair to RL they have taken a view on the number of listeners they get from each team and make a decision accordingly. I think they have got this wrong but it is hardly inconsistent is it?
What Gareth Jones needs to remember is that he is there to serve listeners, I sometimes feel that that RL are there for themselves first and the listeners second.
The sad thing is that this decision won't change.

I have always had the feeling that Mr Jones has no love for Huddersfield Whilst splitting AM and FM between Town and our two neighbours has not always been perfect it was a dam lot better than this. Poor decision Radio Leeds and both Mr Jones and Radio Leeds should take note of the dissatisfaction from Huddersfield fans regarding this.

I wouldn't take to much offence about town being on DAB if not for the fact that the chickens - who basically told radio leeds to fcuk off last season, had been given the prime FM frequency this season.

They did used to always make a point of saying that RL volunteered the commentary to FL Interactive for free. This was a couple of years ago however. Edit, sounds like a deal between the club and RL was negotiated up until this season, not sure what happens now. www.htafc.com/news/article/club-news-bbc-radio-leeds-201415-1565983.aspx

Hi, First time on here so go gently with me, have to say I'm bloody fuming with this Radio Leeds business. One thing I don't think any one has mentioned, there was an advert in this Saturdays Give Us An H, 'BBC Radio Leeds, The Home Of Huddersfield Town Commentaries' (right your having a laugh). I've contacted Sean Jarvis just to highlight the points raised on here. It may just be another angle to follow up, if the club are advertising the RL product/service but we as the user are finding that product/service crap then we should inform the club ?
