Thought I'd revive this thread from a few weeks ago as we now know who the finalists are for 2019. Liverpool v Spurs !!! Who would have thought that a few weeks ago? In fact it's interesting going through all the old posts to see how things have developed. All those who were saying they never watch the Champions League are probably addicted now after the events of the last two evenings. Two of the most dramatic semi-finals ever. Glad you revived it as it gave me the opportunity to see some of your patronising and ignorant comments basically saying that anyone who claims not to be interested or not to watch the CL is s liar. Just thought I’d let you know that I haven’t watched a single minute of CL football live on TV, have no interest in the competition, will not be watching the final and look forward more to the game at St Mary’s on Sunday. Hope that clears up any misunderstanding. The game at St Mary's on Sunday? Biblical Trivial Pursuit?

Given my original prediction (Juve) was incorrect, I'd like to have a second stab and back Ajax. The stars just seem aligned for them and they look unstoppable. Guess again

Yeah, as far as "Champions" go, the Champions League is a joke if you compare it to the old European Cup days when you had to be the champion of your national league to even take part in the competition. That's why so many teams these days don't fight to the end and are happy with a top four finish. Comparable in a way to the promotion places in the so called "Championship", a ridiculous name for that particular league. If Derby get promoted ahead of Leeds i.e 6th goes up instead of 3rd is it right? It'll be hilarious of course but with 9 points seperating the two teams it's hardly fair is it?

If it was a competition for winners of domestic leagues and cups only, it might be called something like “The UEFA Champion of League & Cup Champions League” much like how the Europa League (back when it was a competition for winners of domestic cups, was “The European Cup Winners Cup”...a Cup competition for winners of Cups. Not sure the Football League Championship is poorly named either...the winner of it is is the Champion of the Football League system. Also, disagree on the fairness or not of the play off system. The league season is a qualifier for the play offs, that’s all, just as the league system is a qualifier for the Champions League and Europa League. Ignoring all the stuff about EFL Cup and FA Cup winners shuffling places around, in simple terms Spurs have just earned a Champions League place despite being 25 points behind Man City....do you think City should get an advantage in that totally separate competition?? If not...then likewise it’s totally fair that Derby are now on an equal standing with Leeds or whosever despite finishing the qualifying league competition a few points further back.

It is unusual to interpret the UEFA Champions League in this way. We don’t refer to the EPL as the English Premier Champions League as it is bleedin’ obvious that the winners are the Champions. No, the UEFA Champions League implies that it is a league full of Champions which it is not - the two finalists have not won their domestic championship for 29 and 58 years.

[/b] Football has become boring enough these days without doing away with the play-offs (not that you have suggested it in your post); without those we'd have had very little to cheer about in the last 40 years.

Are you not old enough to remember the European Cup, the UEFA Cup and the Cup Winners Cup ? Yes? Take just one of those, the UEFA Cup....it was a tournament where a Cup was awarded to the team within UEFA that won that competition, it WASN’T a tournament whose entrants were teams who had won their domestic cup. Ergo....the UEFA Champions League is a title handed out, NOT a qualifying criteria. Not really sure why it’s so difficult to comprehend...especially when there were things like the Cup Winners Cup where it’s a Cup handed out, to teams that qualified by being Cup Winners, and also the European Champions Club Cup (what the European Cup was actually called when you had to be a domestic champion to qualify for entry to compete to win the cup). However, I aren’t that bothered!! I do have BT Sport, but I didn’t watch either of the semis, and probably won’t be watching the final (I probably would if I was at home, but I’ll be about 36hrs into a 48hr endurance race at that time).

Chose Spurs a few weeks ago and they've not let me down, hope they go on to win it.
The only downside of this last week, is that it strengthens the brand of the PL, so it'll just add a bit more oomph to their marketing bollocks for the next few months. They also know that BT Sport will be almost forced to was lyrical about the PL knowing that they're a poor relation in terms of the TV rights.

While the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup is recognised as the predecessor to the UEFA Cup, it was not organised by UEFA. Consequently, UEFA does not consider clubs' records in the Fairs Cup to be part of their European record. Bad news for those that won it and think it's a major trophy.....cough, cough chestwankers 😂

I may be old fashioned in my thinking but these new titles are just utter crud in my opinion.
