Are you not old enough to remember the European Cup, the UEFA Cup and the Cup Winners Cup ? Yes? Take just one of those, the UEFA Cup....it was a tournament where a Cup was awarded to the team within UEFA that won that competition, it WASN’T a tournament whose entrants were teams who had won their domestic cup. Ergo....the UEFA Champions League is a title handed out, NOT a qualifying criteria. Not really sure why it’s so difficult to comprehend...especially when there were things like the Cup Winners Cup where it’s a Cup handed out, to teams that qualified by being Cup Winners, and also the European Champions Club Cup (what the European Cup was actually called when you had to be a domestic champion to qualify for entry to compete to win the cup). However, I aren’t that bothered!! I do have BT Sport, but I didn’t watch either of the semis, and probably won’t be watching the final (I probably would if I was at home, but I’ll be about 36hrs into a 48hr endurance race at that time). A convenient rewriting of history. When the tournament changed name to the Champions League in 1992/93, it still only admitted Champions and not runners up or 3rd and 4th places teams. It wasn’t until 1997/98 that non-Champions were admitted.

Doesn't really seem like the working mans game any more... I'm sure it would have been the same problem for Ajax supporters had they won on Wed and indeed, if the final were on UK soil, the Hoteliers would be shafting folk... I despise the use of the word supply and demand, this sort of price hiking is just profiteering, nothing less... www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-48214483

It wasn’t until 1997/98 that non-Champions were admitted. Except of course, whilst the Champions League branding was used (and not for the ENTIRE competition, it was just the initial league part of the tournament), the tournament was still officially competing to win the “European Champion Clubs' Cup”, in a tournament officially abbreviated mostly to “European Cup”. Even now, the winner of the Champions League actually gets the “European Champion Clubs’ Cup”. If you can remember, the Champions League was exclusively on ITV (imagine that now!?) at that time as part of a branding deal, but the final was actually shown on the BBC as they held the contract for the European Cup. I think the clubs even changed kits so they didn’t have the Champions League logo on shirts in the early rounds, and then did, and then didn’t in the final. PS...Monaco competed in 1993/94 despite finishing 3rd in the preceding domestic season 😉

Well, it's all over for another season. Congratulations to all who picked LFC to win the trophy. You know it makes sense! Especially happy for Mo Salah after last year's huge disappointment. For Klopp also, finally ending his losing run. An (almost) perfect end to the season for Liverpool.
